Jun 5, 2006
i am trying to restore my windows xp on an emachine to original factory settings.when i pop the disk in i am getting an error that says cant read R:E17F.GHO. I installed XP Pro and wiped out home... Now I'm having driver issues (they're not working with new OS) and I want to restore my computer to the way it was when I got it. Here's the problem, when I try to use my restore CD's they won't work because I have XP Pro on there .
Currently I am running off of a Windows XP Home Edition. When I first plugged it in I had just resolution problems and windows opening up off of the available screen space. I even changed resolutions, etc. after fishing out the Display Settings window from the abyss. I tried rebooting and going into safe mode but once I got to the Settings screen, my arrow keys would not let me travel there.I figured since I really don't have anything but the Internet and messengers on this computer that I'd just restore the computer to factory settings. The problem? I don't know how. I am pretty sure I have all of the CDs, but if someone could give me a step-by-step that would be excellent. I could read it off of the laptop as I work on it. Try and make it as clear as possible

My computer showed it had a virus and I hit F-11 at startup to put the computer into Safe Mode, but during the process I ended up resetting my computer to the factory settings. The reset said that it would save all my current files into My Backup but I can not find them. I need to reverse the reset and bring my computer hard drive back to the current settings. How can I do this? I heard that the information is still on the hard drive, but I don't know how to retrieve it.

A BIG MISTAKE I found out later. Dell has a "PC Restore for Window XP" that I found out later.
Here's the link:http://support.dell.com/support/topi...docid=181316#1
Basically, "When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time. NOTE: Some systems like Inspiron Mini 9 (910) do not support System Restore as they do not have <F11> nor any substitute."
In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.
I right clicked on "My Computer" icon to the "Microsoft's Management Console" window and I have 3 portion's.
The first one is a "Healthy EISA Configuration" that is FAT 31MBs., the 2nd one is "healthy Unknown Partition" that is a FAT32 3.49 GB's. And the 3rd is a healthy System 79.97 GB's. ( I have a 80 GB HD..
I wanted to restore my system to the factory settings ( I have all important file, music, pictures backup.
Is their any way to do this. I have tried the "system restore" , but I can't get back that far. I can only got back to May 4 2009.

I've been working on trying to restore my girlfriends Dell and I'm having no luck. It's a pre June 2004 computer so the Ctrl F11 startup trick doens't work and i don't have a restore disk.

I recently had to restore my pc to the factory settings after a really bad virus ravaged my machine and am currently trying to configure it the way it was before. However I cant remember how I did a couple things.

I plan on restoring my HP a330n. The last time I restored I had driver problems with my sound card, and LAN. Is their anyway I can save the driver to disk and apply when restore is complete? Also I DO NOT have my original restore disk, but I have the option to just use the in-system restore option, or create disk. Should I create or does it not matter? Also how can I restore the system completely, the last time i did "Complete Restore" there were still unwanted files in the PC.
First off, my Default Margins are: Top 1" Bottom 1" Left 1:25" Right 1.25" from the "Page Setup" Menu But when I try to paste into a new doc [right click>New>Microsoft Word Document]the margins, and other settings, I'm sure, can be way off. I finally realized that when I open a new doc, these settings reflect the last saved document's settings, even tho the default settings are as above. This makes for a mess sometimes when trying to paste forms, etc that rely on default settings/spacings. Office XP is too complex for me, but I'm hoping someone knows where/if there is a setting to over-ride and ALWAYS open a new doc with ALL default settings, as if in a new install.
My Pc has been come crippled with large amounts of spyware that make using the PC more and more diffcult each day. I was planning to complete a full system reformat, or system recovery as my manufacturer describes it. The PC was shipped with two drive C and D, both being a partition of one hard drive. I also added 3 further partitions to D, which means there are actually 5 drives. The computer manual says that when performing a system recovery, you can select to just recover the C partition, but it says that a recovery will provide an image of the PC's software when shipped, so does this mean it will restore the original partitions and lose my current partitions?
I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR2034NX Desktop PC with XP installed from the factory. I needed to do a system recovery that should have put things back to the place they were when I purchased it.10-21-07. It restored things but not back to the original install. Can I do system restore without useing the programs system restore feature? If so, I could restore to an earlier date when things were ok.
I turned on my laptop and got the following message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair." My problem is that I'm unable to location the original Setup CD-ROM. Can this CD be ordered from the manufacturer? Also, whenever this Setup CD is required to repair, will My Documents be effected?
I recently re-installed Windows XP on my Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. My only problem with it is that I can't set my screen resolution to the actual resolution of my screen (1280x800) since the only two options are 800x600 or 1024x768.The nVidia driver I got on the acer website wont install, saying:The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.
I have a Gateway FX6000 that came with Vista. I have managed to change the OS to Windows XP Pro 64 but I probably have outdated drivers. I am unable to connect to the internet with that machine using XP. I do have Linux Ubuntu installed as well and and using that OS I can connect to the internet just fine so I don't think it's a DSL Modem, Router, NIC or cable problem, it's most likely a driver issue. When I look into XP Device Manager, the Network Adapter shows as 1394 Net Adapter but under "Other Devices" ethernet controller, PCI simple and SM Bus I see big yellow questions marks. Will I need to update those yellow question mark devices and if so what's the best approach keeping in mind that on that box, for XP, I don't have a working internet connection.
I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. previous saved point wont let me to restore
I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted?
I'm trying to do a system restore without success. It goes through the motions but after it restarts always say "cannot use restore point, no changes have been made to your system". I'm trying to correct a font setting change that happened without my knowledge.
What are the best settings for System Restore? I am running Windows XP and the minimum is 200mb and the maximum is 8478mb .. I'm not sure if this is correct, but I read somewhere that the highest setting on SR eats a lot of memory and I dont have that much (512) I am getting virtual low minimum memory messages. (I have this set at min 768 and max 1024) So would turning the setting down on SR work with increasing my virtual memory?
It started out as a error 633, and has worked its way around to error 797 after my doing things like destructive restore, uninstall modem, download modem from emachine site, re install, running antivirus, etc...and I still can not use my dailup to get online I can do anything on the puter other than dial up, to get online.
I have a bunch of custom system DSNs set up in my ODBC administrator in Windows XP Pro. I want to transfer these DSNs to a new computer without having to input them all manually. Is there an easy way to back these settings up and then restore them onto my new computer? I tried using the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" but it doesn't seem to save these settings.
I am using an xp machine for my server with mapped drives to the wwwroot on it. Several times, especially today, I will drop the mapped drive connection, and I am unable to remote desktop to the machine. When I switch my monitor over to the machine, the default screen saver is up.I have had to reboot the machine the last couple of times to get reconnected.
I had a file that I could not open in order to read (CompositeLabProWindows). I hastily went to properties in change the file to a messenger file. The file that open and I was able to read the file how ever, an order for the file to work properly I should have been left alone and not tampered with. The men how many times I download the program is still opens up in Windows messenger. My problem is that I need to restore it back to the way it was prior, and remove that the fault mechanism that all some unknown files open up the messenger.
