I turned on my laptop and got the following message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair." My problem is that I'm unable to location the original Setup CD-ROM. Can this CD be ordered from the manufacturer? Also, whenever this Setup CD is required to repair, will My Documents be effected?
I am running: Windows XP Home Edition SP3 Pentium 4 2.0 ghz 512 ram ATI 8500 32.7 Gig HD Spac I keep getting error message "set up is unable to find a HD location to store temp files. Make at least 898KB available. What setting should I use and where is this setting?
I started an upgrade for xp pro part way through the install I got a message "WatchDriverSigningPolicy.exe" no found I pressed enter then got another message "fake setup call himself instead original "setup.exe" ; setup abort!" now each time I reboot it starts to load xp then gives me the same message then press enter it then reboots.
I'm building my first system from scratch, and have done fine up until the XP installation. This is by far the first XP installation I've done, so thought it would be a breeze. Not turning out that way.
It runs like normal until it gets to the part where it restarts and is supposed to resume/complete the installation. When it boots back up, it goes right back to the original Setup screen (Enter for setup, R for repair, etc). I've tried re-installing numerous times
I recently re-installed Windows XP on my Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. My only problem with it is that I can't set my screen resolution to the actual resolution of my screen (1280x800) since the only two options are 800x600 or 1024x768.The nVidia driver I got on the acer website wont install, saying:The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. i am trying to restore my windows xp on an emachine to original factory settings.when i pop the disk in i am getting an error that says cant read R:E17F.GHO. What is that and how can i get this thing working? There is also a message that reads ''Cannot Open GHOSTERR.TXT '' and it also says Floppy Disk(s) fail (40)

I have got a problem with formatting my PC. Everytime I try to fromat it, it gives me a message (Setup was unable to fromat the partition. this disk may be damaged. If the disk is SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated). But i have tried about 6 different hard disks but still giving me the same message.
Somtimes I am able to fromat it but when the system does the first reboot after deleting the files, it starts the whole process all over again
I have been using this PC without any problem for 6 months. I wanted to reinstall my Windows XP on my PC and tried to booting up with a bootable Windows XP_SP2 Prof CD(first boot is CD ROM). But to my surprise, the setup process in not taking place. I am getting a grey blank screen(instead of windows setup screen) after this message "Setup is inspecting your Computer's Hardware configuration".This is the case only with the Windows XP bootable CD. I have tried to boot with different WinXP CDs, but of no use. However, I am able to boot with Win 98, Win 2000 and even with Win 2003 via boot CDs.I am suspecting whether there is any problem with the motherboard, as I was able to install Windows XP Pro before on the same PC.
When booting from an old Windows 98 bootdisk to install Windows XP (with slipstreamed SP1) I allways got this message: "Setup was unable to copy cdrom.sys".The problem was known at Microsoft (knowledge base) and they even got a solution for it (dude!).In the config.sys on your disk there will be a line somewhat like this: "device= /d:cdrom" simply change the cdrom to something else like : "device=..... /d:DVDRAM" and it will work.
1. When I try to run the Network Setup Wizard, I get an error at the very end that Windows was unable to complete the setup 2. When I select Windows Firewall from the Control Panel, I says that it cannot start the service 3. When I select Network Connections>Local Area Connection>Properties>Advanced (tab) it says that it cannot display some of the properties of the connection because WMI information may be corrupted 4. When I try to configure my Intel network adapter, it says that it "failed to load a network component" 5. Also, this is not related to networking but the Windows Updater has failed to install every update for quite a while now.
I am trying to do a repair on IE 6.0 but I cannot get into windows add remove programs. I keep getting the error posted in the subject line. It tell me to contact the system admin. I am the Admin. I've setup Windows 2003 fax services on a W2K3 server and shared the device. I've tested faxing from Word on my PC and it works fine.However, when other users try to install the fax client, the setup hangs asking for the fx* setup files. I've tried different XPSP2 CDs, copying the files to a local directory, making sure that the users have local admin rights (and even domain admin rights) but to no avail. The files are already in the system32 directory so in theory the setup doesn't even need to copy them. Even if I delete them, it doesn't work.Our corporate SMS team reckons that there isn't any policy which could cause the problem.
I've been looking all around the internet for 2 months for my answer, yet I haven't been able to do this. It seems simple to me. Why can't I find an answer for this question...How do you re-format the C drive?It seems at least simple to me. That's all I want to so. I have two paritions, C and D. C is my system partition, and install Windows XP Pro on it. That's all. In XP setup, it will not let me format it, so to me in theory, I'm at a dead end. So I've installed XP on the C drive three times, all in the same folder, and now it has taken up 10 GB (why?) of space when it only should take no more than 4.
I mistakenly launched XP Setup and want to know how to stop it from progressing further. I have another XP installed on another virtual disk. Rebooting from there allowed me delete the Setup files. Or so I thought ! The main XP installation however continues to try to launch Setup. Just about whatever I do, it ends in tears. My question is how do I stop XP on this disk from thinking it has to launch Setup? I dont want to reinstall XP, as that will involve a huge amount of work to recreate my environment.
I am gonna re-install windows and i heard that you can(should) back up your drivers, one question exactly where are? is it like 1 file or a whole bunch?
I was told to reinstall windows 2000 aon a C800 I was given. I stopped with an erroro reading line 3221166496 hivedef.inf corrupted. Setup cannot continue.

If one does not get created automatically (when executing chkdsk c: /F), can I specify to pipe it to a file ? I will be running this upon bootup , when I restart my computer.
When you go to save a file, a dialogue box appears that on the left has several pre-set choices (such as 'history' 'my documents' 'desktop' etc.Is there a way to define one of those pre-set choices to be a folder of your own choosing?
Windows XP Pro Temporary files, which are usually created in my local temp folder (C:/Documents and Settings/my files/Local Settings/Temp) have suddenly moved location to WINDOWS/Temp. Nothing is created in any users' temp folders, all temp files are now dumped into the WINDOWS/Temp folder.
At the same time, Carbonite stopped working, and I now get error messages that Carbonites Secure Backup Communications Service has failed. Of course, these two may not be related, and Carbonite support are helping me to sort out the problem with their program - but it may be a clue? The only other changes made in the same period this problem with the Temp folder happened was an automatic upgrade of Thunderbird and an upgrade of Adobe Flash Player. Everything else seems to be functioning correctly on my computer. Has anyone an explanation as to why this happened and does it matter?
Is it better to have the MyDocuments folder outside the local C: drive or to use the default MyDocuments folder that is a subfolder to the local C: drive? Why? I have been using a MyDocuments folder that is at the same level as MyComputer in the directory tree, because I was told that there is a limitation to the size of the MyDocuments folder. However, it also was mentioned that the size limitation does not exist with WinXPpro.
I often want to restore files from the Recycle Bin to a common folder and do other such file operations. However, the limitations on C:RECYCLER access are annoying. Is there a way to:
a) change the location of the Recycle Bin? or b) reroute all or most deleted files to a specific folder (say, D:)?
where can I find the location of my Hard-Drive Partitions? I don't mean as in My Computer and double click, Microsoft Windows XP Professional Backup" /noexecute=optin. That sort of data, so I can add my windows 7 OS to the Boot Screen.
I'm trying to speed things up for my brother who has dialup Internet. He's rebuilding his PC with his XP CD which is SP1. I have a copy of SP2 in a folder on my PC so I figured I'd just burn it to CD for him. The problem is, my Cd burner reports an error when it tries to burn this. It burns other folders just fine, but reports an error (media error-but on several different disks from the same package that works fine burning other folders) when trying to burn the SP2 folder. (I can copy the folder to a different location & the same problem occurs when burning from the different location-so I don't think it's a corrupted file/folder although I wouldn't want to be too dogmatic on that. It could be a type of corruption that Explorer handles OK but the CD burner (Sonic/Roxio CD Creator, version 10 IIRC) doesn't.) My PC is 2.8GHz P4, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD with plenty of free space. WinXP, SP2 running AVG Internet Security. Hmmm-haven't tried it with AV turned off, think that might make a difference?
