New Build, Installation / Goes Right Back To The Original Setup Screen
Jun 1, 2008
I'm building my first system from scratch, and have done fine up until the XP installation. This is by far the first XP installation I've done, so thought it would be a breeze. Not turning out that way.
It runs like normal until it gets to the part where it restarts and is supposed to resume/complete the installation. When it boots back up, it goes right back to the original Setup screen (Enter for setup, R for repair, etc). I've tried re-installing numerous times

I reformat the drives and during the XP Home Discs process of copying files for the installation, the process freezes the system anywhere from 11% at driver.cab to 54% at some random file (i didnt take note). I have tried 2 different XP home Discs (both legal etc.) and two different disk drives, though both are new. and still it is yielding the same result. I have also tried loosening the ram timings to 5-5-5-15 (they are rated at 4-4-4-12). No luck and this is beggining to wear me down.

1) While I originally started with XP SP2, now I have a XP SP3 CD, with the SATA drivers successfully incorporated via nLite. SAME PROBLEM, even with the BIOS and XP Setup recognizing the HDDs on SATA ports instead of IDE channels.
2) I downloaded the Windows 7 Beta 64 bit, got thru the install to the point of "Updating Registry" and then the system lost power as with XP and did a soft restart.I am currently downloading to Ubuntu Linux to see if that also fails, at which point I definitely know I have a hardware issue. The question is: Which component? I am leaning towards PSU, with mobo in second. Please any insight from the pros would help.

I turned on my laptop and got the following message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair." My problem is that I'm unable to location the original Setup CD-ROM. Can this CD be ordered from the manufacturer? Also, whenever this Setup CD is required to repair, will My Documents be effected?

The only thing that might have changed it is adobe reader 7 which I installed the day before the display changed. Is there any way to change it back to the origional display?

My computer didn't come with an XP CD, just the manufacturer's restore CD which will wipe out all I've done in the last four years. So, if I backup (copy) all the files on my C drive, except the Windows folder (assuming that's where all the OS files are), to an external drive, then run the restore CD which will revert the computer back to the way it was when I bought it. Then download and install SP2 and copy the original files back to C.

so, a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster.so now i've got my laptop and i've noticed it getting slower and thought that i would do this... VERY BAD MOVE! i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of 'standard pc', there is also a new section titled 'other devices' with about 15 devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention 'ISA' so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots? i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down, when i press the power button it turns off straight away (doesn't even shut down!). i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button. i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available. when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby.
i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i've tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail! the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app it says that bluetooth and wireless are not present (by the way i can still get the bluetooth button to work - correction - it starts up with the button on but if i turn it off it won't let me turn it on again). the emanager and presentation manager buttons on the laptops casing don't work either (i have to access them via software route).

It then restarts after about 1 minute. When I open in it up in safe mode, however, nothing is wrong with it! So I decided to reinstall windows, and i formatted c:; installing windows and it restarts during the installation...Windows then says "restarting reinstallation, and starts the installation from the beginning. Then it restarts again.

A new 250 gig seagate SATA 7200.8 hard drive and a win xp home upgrade edition. enabled SATA in BIOS, connected SATA cable to SATA1 on mobo, BIOS didn't recognize the drive, connected to SATA2 and BIOS did recognize drive so I tried to partition and format using Seagate's DiscWizard from floppy. Things seemed to go fine until I got a message that format wasn't completed because of some error.I went ahead and tried to install from xp cd, loaded SATA drivers from floppy, cd started loading but then hangs up at "setup is starting windows"I've never used SATA before.

I read somewhere that I could do a repair installation to see if I could fix it. Well I go through the usual steps until I get to registering components where it goes for about a minute and then restarts. I thought thats what its suppose to do so I wait and wait and it goes through the whole process over so I go through it about 10 times before I realize something is wrong. So I go on my brother's laptop and look up whats wrong and I try opening the comand prompt by pressing shift+F10 and then typing "control sysdm.cpl" to get to the system in the control panel

I recently re-installed Windows XP on my Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. My only problem with it is that I can't set my screen resolution to the actual resolution of my screen (1280x800) since the only two options are 800x600 or 1024x768.The nVidia driver I got on the acer website wont install, saying:The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.

Here's the problem. When I open Network Connections icon in the Control Panel and click the New Connection Wizard, the "Connect using a dial-up modem" option is grayed out and can't be clicked. Does anyone know what I could do to get that option back?

I got this dell inspiron 1721 from a friend, and it had Vista Home Premium. I wanted to get XP back, so I installed it and then the system was dual booting and it took up 85% of my hard drive. SO...I tried to reformat it and just install XP, but the only disk i had was for my (gateway xp media center) desk top so none of my dirvers installed and then the whole thing became a big mess. Now, I have XP installled with most of the drivers installed, but now I miss Vista, and when I try to install with my Vista recovery disk, I get an error: can not install install missing or corrupt file e:sourcesinstall.wim error 0x80070570... or something similar to that. I have been at this for days on end.

Isn't the problem going from vista back to xp an sata driver problem? If you would disable sata native mode then boot from the xp cd it should show the hard drive and any partitions. The biggest chore may be getting the drivers needed for XP and if is a laptop they rarely come with a floppy drive, so during the xp install I don't know if after you press F6 if you can remove the xp cd and put in a cd that you burned the needed drivers to if a floppy is not available. People should have the freedom to choose whatever operating system they want without all of the headaches

I am attempting to clean install XP Home to a (semi) new system.New mobo (PCChips P23G v3.0); new Intel Celeron D 3.2MHz processor; one new stick 512mb US Modular DDRII; new Seagate 250GB HD; -these are all upgrades to an existing case with existing 300W p/s; floppy; CD-ROM.Problem: setup loads files as normal, then reboots. When it comes back up and the GUI phase is suppose to start, it goes to a blank screen and nothing else happens.I have tried different memory, different (older) HD;I've tried making changes to the BIOS (new board that is suppose to be XP compatible, but tried it anyway. onboard video, sound, etc. No extra cards installed. Very minimal system); I've tried setup by booting from the CD, booting from floppies, xcopying I386 to the harddrive; I've tried loading an old version of Windows 98! and then doing an "upgrade" (actually a new install is the only option- it is an OEM version of XP Home, not an upgrade).
I've searched MS but nothing comes close to solving this issue.I've built systems before with XP pro (and older) and have never had anything close to the problems with this one.

MAJOR problem trying to install windows XP pro. After rebooting I keep getting to the same screen the "welcome to setup" screen, where I hit ENTER , F8 at the EULA, then I see the partition list.At this point regardless of if I hit ENTER for the selected partition, or delete and recreate the partition (and reformat to NTFS), it loads files from CD, then reboots and takes me back to the same screen.
