i just took my old hard drive out of my old computer and put in my new comp, but the user profile i was using in old HD is now locked and windows says i have no access to this folder? How can i gain acess to all my files out of this folder now through my new xp?
I recently got a new PC and stuck my old hard drive in. I can now open all my files except the ones under Documents and Settings. Access is denied comes up when i try to do anything with them. I tried the windows help, and it told me to go to the Security tab under options and take ownership, but there is no Security tab. What do I do? (Running XP Media Center, Old hard drive is set to D:)
I accidently ereased or deleted all logon or (user) accounts on my computer before I logged off and when I turned on the computer on again and I cant logon to my computer. Does anyone have any idea and or help how I can get into my computer and created a new admin acount so I can logon?
I only have 12% free space on my D hard drive and when I try to go into the drive to delete some files/programs, I get a lock icon and I get a message that I can't delete. It's a back-up for the computer and it is locked. How can I go into the drive to delete some items. I know I don't need all those files/programs backed up. I have a HP Media computer and I have XP.
I have 2 drives, one with Windows and such, and the other with about 1,000 games that my girlfriend plays. She let her grandson on, unsupervised, and the next thing is a trashed system drive. Unfortunately, there was no way to save it, so I did a format and clean reinstall of XP Home. Goback was on the drive, and there was no way to uninstall it before the reinstall. The reinstall went fine, but the GAME drive is virtually inaccessible. It doesn't show in My Computer, but does show in Admin Tools, Disk Management. However, the drive name is shown as F(F. It should either be D: or F: ( there are 2 optical drives). I can't change the name or drive letter. I get the error "the drive is locked".
I tried Partition Magic, and it will change the info, temporarily. Also, PM shows the drive as *.F It doesn't give any error message, and says the change has been applied, but it obviously hasn't. I searched this forum for "hard drive locked" and followed suggestions that I had not tried previously. The smiley replaced a colon; the entry should read F(F. Sometimes I think I might know what I'm doing, and then I realize, maybe not.
ive got a hard drive that i could accsess all the time. Then one day no workie now when I try to acceses the drive I get a window that pops up and says Compaq Recovery partition warning. This area of your hard disk (or partition)contains files used for your system recovery. donot delete or alter these files. anychange to these files could delete or alter these files
I have a laptop that runs Windows XP. Recently I opened it and an error message that says that the computer is locked and only the administrator can log on appeared. But, I'm the administrator of the computer! It is not apart of any network so no one else was using it.The keyboard is also locked so I can't type anything.
I have filled my other hard drive with so much junk that it won't even load up anymore, and so it just doesn't come on and it was windows xp. Does any body know how I would wipe, or reformat it? One last question, I have another hard drive, its empty and I don't think its formatted. If I were to use it as the primary hard drive and use my XP boot cd, would it install?
using 2nd drive for slave start my pc up comes up drive locked password hit enter a few times windows boots up 2nd drive not unlocked i know the password
Running Windows XP Home Edition SP1 and when using the error checking tool, after double clicking my computer, then right clicking the C drive, then clicking properties, clicking tools and under clicking the check boxes. Rebooting the computer a message appears, the volume is locked and error checking cannot be run. The computer then proceeds to reboot my settings. How can the volume be unlocked? With it's various problems, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not allowed on my computer.
After thinking my computer was running well I made a restore point to that effect, after defragging and using check disc. I continued using my computer and a couple of times rebooted without problems after installing windows updates. The next morning when booting up I was completely locked out at the welcome page, asking me to validate my copy of Windows. This I did over 4 years ago, and would have ticked the box to say yes, unfortunately the mouse locked.
I have put another copy of XP onto my D: drive to get here and write this, but with only 25 days for activation, which I do not want. Has anybody any idea please what has happened. I do have back-ups but they would only work if I reformatted my C: drive which is a lot of bother. I have tried starting in safe mode, last good known configuration, but it always locks at the welcome screen.
I dropped old laptop. There is a lot of information on it. As I have one of the small external cases for a laptop drive I installed the HD from the dead beast with the hope I could save the info on it. IT WORKS!! but when I try to copy or view anything in /documents and settings it denies me access. I tried changing the boot order to start on USB deviced to try and boot from it but it doesn't seem to see it.
I did a system restore on my laptop after recklessly cleaning files off of my hard drive. Since then I can't access my d:/, so I can't reinstall anything, including my internet and Microsoft Office software. If I look in the control panel I can see everything (I didn't lose any personal files), but D: always comes up as D:/RECOVERY, then fiendishly warns me not to look inside (which I haven't).
I built a new computer w/ XP Pro. Its has a ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe MB w/ a 3.2 Mhz cpu. with a raptor hard drive. I set it up by installing the raptor alone, after xp was up and running I put the seagate 40gb in. It was running fine, when I took it out to put it back in the old system it was in it would not even start the check of IDE's. If I removed power from the HD it would say no IDE's found. I have award BIOS v4.51pg and when I hit delete I can't enter setup. (?) The only thing new to the old system is another video card (I put the old one in the new computer) I also removed the cd burner and dvd plyer and put it in the new computer, and a old dvd player was put back in the old computer. No setting were changed. I have tried to put the 40 gb back to the new comp and I get an error message w/ options to continue starting windows, start in safe, safe w/ com prompt, etc.
Recently I have not been able to access my hard drive(s) from My Computer. I double click on one of my partitions and the computer does nothing. It doesn't open the drive in order to see the files!! It even doesn't work when I plug in my external USB drive either. It sounds like a windows problem to me. However I can access any disk that I want if I type the corresponding address in the address bar.Do I need to reinstall a driver/services or even XP ?
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with a Pentium 4, 1.8 GHz. A while back, I installed a new ~75GB hard drive as the secondary drive (slave is the term, right?). Based on the fact that this is a newer drive, and on my own experience using the computer, I'm pretty sure the new drive is a lot faster than the original one. I'd like to make the best use of this additional speed, and was thinking about moving Windows and most of my program files to it. The older, 40GB drive could then be used for backup/archives.I've done some initial searches, both here and on MS's knowledge base, but couldn't find instructions for doing what I want to do. Also review www.michaelstevenstech.com, found the Move XP section, but still didn't seem like an exact match.
I recently bought Fantom Drives 1Tb external hard drive, Model # GF 1000EU. After about a year all computers would stop recognizing the external hard drive. My computers would know it was connected but I would not see it under "My computer." I read through hundreds of forums trying to fix the problem. When nothing worked I decided to take apart the enclosure and remove the hard drive so I could connect it to my desktop pc using a SATA cable. Essentially, I have two hard drives connected to my computer and I want to use one as an external hard drive so I am able to access data from it while still running my computer off of it's original hard drive. Is this possible?
I have a second hard drive installed on my computer. Lets call this F:My main hard drive, were I am running WXP SP2, Home Ed., and were my program files are kept. Lets Call this drive C:IP3, 733mhz, 384 mb, HOMEMADE. works well, very happy $5.99 OBO.I am filling up C: and have tons of room on F:. Can I put program files on F:, easily that my computer will recognize and be able to use effectivley and effciently? With out jack-ups? Yes I understand that this an imperfect world, but If I could do what I wish within this situation, I will be closer to.
I am dying to delete everything on my hdrive and compltely rebuild my computer. Am lookin for a quick answer cause am getting like 10 pop ups a minute and its recking my head lol, that and i have so much junk on my computer this formating is well overdue.
I have a 2nd hard drive installed on my computer and i noticed yesterday that everything on it except for one folder has been deleted everything from my music to my videos. However, when i check the properties of the hard drive it still shows that space is being taken up on that 2nd hard drive as if all my files are still there. I went into my itunes and tried to play the music i have on my 2nd hard drive through itunes and to my surprise it still plays which it shouldn't if the files had in fact been deleted.
I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.
When I was attempting to modify the booting process on my newly acquired computer to be an uninterrupted process rather than having to select a user icon midway, I managed to somehow alter the booting process so that now it stops shortly after beginning to show a page with a message that reads as follows:"The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type in your password again".
I had to replace my harddrive on my Acer Travelmate 2480. After running the system restore discs my computer is in French. How do I put it back in English?
I just did a partial run of BCwipe, just 2 scans, because I had to shut the computer down and now my hard drive is full!! Before using BCwipe, I had at least half of the drive free. What happend and what can I do now?
Every 3-4days my computer would freeze up while booting up at windows XP screen and scroll bars would freeze. What bohers me about this is i am sure what could be causing this. I use avg as my antivirus, and run A2, spybot, regcleaner, tweaknow on a weekly basis. I keep my system really clean, so now i am wondering is it my HD. PC: Win XP-PRO, 800MHZ AMD Athlon, 1024mb,80gHD. I did what cleaning i could in safemode, it still freeze on scroll bars. I tried last good config, result is the same. The last time i got pass the freezing was by doing a restore.
I have a gateway running windows xp. I had a virus and ran mcafee. It told me to reboot so I did and now nothing happens. hte gateway screen comes up and nothing after that it just stays on the gateway screen. I can't enter safe mode and it will not read my recovery disk. I called gateway and they told me that because my computer is out of the warranty, they would be happy to help me and then gave me three payment options. I have come to grips that I will need to format the hard drive, but I just don't know how to get it to that point. the only thing that happens is the gateway screen and the fan runs really loud.
I have a Compaq Presario 900 which doesn't have a working CDrom drive.I took my harddrive out and put it in my friends Dell Inspiron B130 and installed Windows xp SP2. Now that all works fine but(there is always a but ....) when I tried to put the harddrive back into my laptop(Presario 900) Windows will not boot, even if I go to safemode first thing. I thought maybe I could install Windows from the USB port but my BIOS doesn't have a BOOT FROM USB option. Also there is no Bios update that will give me that option.I have tried deleting and installing all the drivers for the Presario then trying to boot like that but it still gets stuck.
My friend has a laptop, and the power supply went on it. He gave me his hard drive, so I can back up his data. I removed the hard drive in my laptop, and installed his. When I boot I get a blue screen that says remove any newly installed hard drive or controllers. I cant get windows to boot, so that I can backup the data.
i was wondering if i take my computer harddrive and put it in a usb case to make it a usb hard drive would i beable to then take my portable hard drive to anycomputer and boot my windows xp off of it?
I am running XP Pro on my computer. On another drive I have windows 7. My computer stopped booting to my XP drive all of a sudden, but it would let me boot to my Windows 7 drive. That lasted for about 3 days. Now I can't boot to either drive. When I start the computer it says there is no HDD. I tried to use the XP disk to repair, that didn't work., so I thought I'd do an XP install. But my hard drive doesn't show up all the time. Or it will show the HDD but upon trying to pick a partition to set up XP in, it then tell me there is no HDD. I get the blue screen of death, and have to manually force a shut down. Other times it tell me that the HDD is RAW, and it needs to be formatted. How can I get the HDD to format? Is there a way to do it through DOS. Sometimes I can't even get to the DOS prompt. The bootup section is corrupt. I need to repair it, but can't if the system doesn't see my HDD.
