I dropped old laptop. There is a lot of information on it. As I have one of the small external cases for a laptop drive I installed the HD from the dead beast with the hope I could save the info on it. IT WORKS!! but when I try to copy or view anything in /documents and settings it denies me access. I tried changing the boot order to start on USB deviced to try and boot from it but it doesn't seem to see it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 4 PC's all running WinXP/SP3 on a workgroup using simple sharing. All PC's had access to all other PC's shared folders and external backup drives. Norton Ghost worked successfully from each PC, writing to either of two external backup hd (one ea on two of the four PC's). Life was good. Then I moved two PC's and changed the Computer Name on each. Now I am able to access the My Documents shared folder from/to any computer, but I'm unable to access the external backup harddrives. I have admin privledges on all machines.

A code 10 error appeared every time I tried to access through my device manager, and I cannot find a driver to operate this hard drive, I will many songs and pictures if I cannot access this external hard drive. I went on the Maxtor site and they said, it is an internal driver that operates off of my system, what can I do to access the data on this external hard drive.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine at work has problems sharing external usb hard drives connected to his laptop. He is running XP pro, and when he attempts to share a drive connected through usb, giving everyone full control it lets no one in. Not even he can, and he is the creator/owner of the share. I'm pretty sure its not a permissions issue, since it gives the same error when I try to browse it and I have domain admin rights.
This has happened with three separate drives, all of which can be shared when connected to any other pc than his. ( I have tried all three on four separate computers, making the share the exact same way with full access.The computer can see the share just fine, it just denies permission to access it either from the computer that created the share, or from any other computer on the network.
I'm helping a friend whose system went belly up after a power failure. Besides telling him to get a surge protector, we are going to reload Windows and everything else. I pulled his hard drive and put it in an external enclosure so that we can collect his data files on another system. When I try to copy his files Windows tells me "access denied". What do I need to do to have access to copy these files?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI ran "cacls C: /P guest:n" in a command prompt. After that, I was unable to access anything. I shutdown and booted from the OEM CD. I ran a repair install. I rebooted and put the CD in to try to finish the repair installation. It was going fine for about 5 minutes. Then I got a fatal error. I looked the error code up and it said that this meant that there were not sufficient permissions to perform the necessary tasks. Now, I can't even boot into Windows so what is the best way to fix this? Maybe resetting the permissions (if so, how)? (By the way, I have already tried cacls in recovery console and copying it onto a flash drive and running it in the recovery console. Neither work. I am dual-booting with Ubuntu on another partition, so if I need to use linux for the repair, feel free to recommend that.)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new SATA HDD, and decided to use it as my primary drive. I installed a new clean OS XP Pro on it and set my old primary drive to slave. Everything boots fine, and I can see my secondary drives, but when I try to access some files from it it says Access Denyed. This error message occurs on random files and folders, but are not system files/folders. Sometimes the folders when right clicked on said they had zero bits of data.
When I boot from my secondary drive again I ran into another wierd problem where it seems that I have lost all USB support. Since my mouse and keyboard are both USB I had to dig around and find serial devices instead. The keyboard works, but not the mouse. I was able get into my system and the files that were locked before when my drive was set to slave were ok and I was able to access them and the folders that said they contained no data, had all the data inside and accessable. I booted again as a slave drive, with same problem. But when I went to boot as a primary my serial keyboard doesn't even work. WIndows boots, but I cant get past the login screen because of lack of io devices. Is there anyway I can unlock/remove the OS thats on and get my files back that are "locked or missing"?
My 20 Gb HD is gaining data at a rate of about 1MB every 4 days and I have limited space. I am not down loading any programs or anything I want to keep, also I daily run ADIOS to clean out all the cookies, temporary internet files, etc. I have deleted all programs that I am not using, also I am allowing SYSTEM RESTORE to to have only 1022 MB of space. My OS is XP home with SP2. Can someone please help me determine where this data is coming etc.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows XP Home Edition SP1 and when using the error checking tool, after double clicking my computer, then right clicking the C drive, then clicking properties, clicking tools and under clicking the check boxes. Rebooting the computer a message appears, the volume is locked and error checking cannot be run. The computer then proceeds to reboot my settings. How can the volume be unlocked? With it's various problems, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not allowed on my computer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter thinking my computer was running well I made a restore point to that effect, after defragging and using check disc. I continued using my computer and a couple of times rebooted without problems after installing windows updates. The next morning when booting up I was completely locked out at the welcome page, asking me to validate my copy of Windows. This I did over 4 years ago, and would have ticked the box to say yes, unfortunately the mouse locked.
I have put another copy of XP onto my D: drive to get here and write this, but with only 25 days for activation, which I do not want. Has anybody any idea please what has happened. I do have back-ups but they would only work if I reformatted my C: drive which is a lot of bother. I have tried starting in safe mode, last good known configuration, but it always locks at the welcome screen.
I have 2 drives, one with Windows and such, and the other with about 1,000 games that my girlfriend plays. She let her grandson on, unsupervised, and the next thing is a trashed system drive. Unfortunately, there was no way to save it, so I did a format and clean reinstall of XP Home. Goback was on the drive, and there was no way to uninstall it before the reinstall. The reinstall went fine, but the GAME drive is virtually inaccessible. It doesn't show in My Computer, but does show in Admin Tools, Disk Management. However, the drive name is shown as F(F. It should either be D: or F: ( there are 2 optical drives). I can't change the name or drive letter. I get the error "the drive is locked".
I tried Partition Magic, and it will change the info, temporarily. Also, PM shows the drive as *.F It doesn't give any error message, and says the change has been applied, but it obviously hasn't. I searched this forum for "hard drive locked" and followed suggestions that I had not tried previously. The smiley replaced a colon; the entry should read F(F. Sometimes I think I might know what I'm doing, and then I realize, maybe not.
i just took my old hard drive out of my old computer and put in my new comp, but the user profile i was using in old HD is now locked and windows says i have no access to this folder? How can i gain acess to all my files out of this folder now through my new xp?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Dell XPS w 2 hard drives. the master is 80gb(NTFS).."C" drive, and the slave is 120gb(FAT32)...."F" drivethe other day, after a re-start, Windows gave me the not so friendly message "Checking file system on F...the volume is dirty...windows is verifying files and folders.......0 percent complete"now, the problem is that it took 30 HOURS! before it completed its checkup! well, so before i panicked too much, i decided to buy an external drive to back up some stuff from the slave drive. after backing up about 20 gb worth of stuff, i re-started, and it did the same thing! tho this time it took "only" 18 HOURS to do its checking! it did say that "windows replaced bad clusters in files"

In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI turned the PC off to reboot when I though I was going into safe mode and went into regular mode instead. Now, it thinks one of my external drives is the C drive. On boot, I am getting a message that it cannot recognize find the system 32 windows config file (I'm paraphrasing).
I used the repair utility to get to the C prompt (which is pointed at the external drive) and checked the drive letters. I don't think the PC bios knows the hard drive is there.
I tried going into setup and reverting to factory installed configuration and that didn't change anything. I could not get it to recognize the hard drive.
I installed an a 2.5 Toshiba notebook drive in a external enclosure and I can't get XP to recognize it. The drive spins up and the light comes on to indicate it is running but nothing is shown in device manager or My computer. It also is not shown in disk management.I have uninstalled the the USB drivers through the device manager with no change after rebooting. The USB ports work fine with my other external drive.The drive was working fine in a notebook that had a
cracked screen. It is formated in NTFS. What else should I be looking at to solve this problem?
I did a system restore on my laptop after recklessly cleaning files off of my hard drive. Since then I can't access my d:/, so I can't reinstall anything, including my internet and Microsoft Office software. If I look in the control panel I can see everything (I didn't lose any personal files), but D: always comes up as D:/RECOVERY, then fiendishly warns me not to look inside (which I haven't).

She managed to delete the graphics card driver and so when that occurred and rebooted, nothing on-screen! Its there, you just cannot see anything in windows! I want to use my (HP Pavilion zv6000 w/XP) laptop as that external drive to re-load her original CD, which (of course) has all the drives on it! At start-up, the Acer (also w/XP) has an option to start-up from an ext. drive, so it has that capability (obviously, w/o a drive of its own), but how to make my HP "look" like an external drive (via USB-to-USB hookup) is the problem!
If you get another hard drive cause yours is almost full and there fore messing with the virtual.memory. If you get an external harddrive is it better to move the pagefile to the new hard drive which is what I was going to do change the drive for the virtual memory, then I got thinking, in case you didn't use the external drive all the time hooked up for whatever reason they you wouldn't have a pagefile on the old one does that make sense? I thought maybe it would be better just to move a bunch of pics and music to the extenal drive and leave the virtual memory (pagefile) where it is on the old drive, or would it make any difference??
View 4 Replies View Relatedi have WD elements 160gb external drive, when i connect it to my desktop it say new hardware found and asks to install software for it but when i ask XP to install software automatically then it says no driver found.
the drive is plug and play so i don't have any software for it nor it is listed anywhere in the WD website.
However the drives is functioning properly in my laptop and on my freind's desktop as well....so seems like my drive's alrite.I can easily use 4gb pen drive and 30gb ipod on my desktop but not my external drive.
