XPpro with two HDs, CDr/w and DVDr/w.(D AND (E are (were?) a 20G drive which I partitioned over a year ago. This morning I came across a 4G drive in an old box. (really). Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave. Then switched on. A dos line appeared saying 'automatically configuring an F: drive' After which Windows appeared to boot up normally. Except that 'My Computer' showed no (D The 4G (F drive showed as not formated. So... I removed the 4G and replaced the leads back to the DVD. My Computer' shows 3.5 floppy Local Disk(C FRSTHAFOLD(D 9G abt Notice NO (E
Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?

Windows is taking 13GB of the 20GB space on my hard drive. I think this is the source of my slow processing and inability to burn DVDs.

Using XP, I have moved the My Documents folder to a new drive "E". Seemed OK, but I was thrown by the fact I still have a "My Documents" folder listed under "Documents and Settings/myusername" In his folder, I also have folders for Cookies, Desktop, Favourites and Start Menu.
Q1. Should I delete this duplicate My Documents folder and or is it correct to leave it there as a copy (according to propertiesit is located on the C drive)
Q2. Should I move the other folders too?
I have also posted seperately a similarly related question about the program Folder

I recently decided to partition my basic HD so that I could have my audio applications and files on one partition (C) and and all my other crap on the other (E). Both partitions are using Windows XP. Now...I recently formatted partition (C) and reinstalled Windows on it, and suddenly the other partition changed its extension from (E) to (D) and was no longer available for me to log onto: Windows no longer asked me what installation I would like to log onto at startup. That was OK at first because I was still able to see all files that were on the computer while using dive (C) and save some of them. However, there was some data that was visible but screwed, especially the ones containing compressed material and this is really where all my important stuff was. Everything else worth saving could be transferred or copied onto (C), the working partition: wav files, mp3's, documents of any kind...etc.

I tried to format my hard drive by right clicking the c: drive then clicking format. At the end, it says "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no windows is displaying contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.". This happens all the time.

I have a friend who's computer has 4 partitions on it. He has no clue how they got there, and I have zero knowledge of partitions. His C drive has like 13gb and is full, his G drive has the most and I think it's like 76gb and then he also has an H and an I.
Someone who was "trying to fix it" copied the C drive and pasted it to all the other drives, which didn't do anything except, well, make copies of everything. I spent a couple hours and just went through folder after folder and made one "KEEP" folder and cut/pasted everything into it. He went and bought a portable hard drive and we'll move everything over to it for safe keeping while we try to get those partitions out.
My question is, would it just be easier to reformat the whole thing? I have all of his docs and pictures, which is the biggest thing for him. He has a Sony set, and has a repair disk and his WinXP number. I have a OEM WinXP disk, so should I just go into the bios, have the computer boot to the CD first, then do a repair or reformat? And at what point do I remove those partitions???

Is there a way to re-allocated drive space (from one partition to another) with re-installing XP? I have a C & D partitioned drive, with much to spare on D as my C drive is almost depleted (factory config). Can this be done 'live'?

i have an Acer aspire 5630 laptop, running windows xp media edtion. It has a 110 GB hard drive which Acer partitioned in 3 parts. The first one im not concerned about its almost 5 GB and called PQ service (EISA configuration. the other 2 are just over 53 GB one has my xp the other was formatted to NTFS, I found I could delete the partition and then from command from extend the main partition typing diskpart, list volume, select the volume i want to extend by typing select volume 1 or whatever then type extend with the amount or if i leave it blank it should extend the partition to the full drive. but when i type extend I get the following message. Diskpart failed to extend the volume. please make sure the volume is valid for extending. And i desperately need the extra space.

After working for sometime with Maxtor One Touch II external drive, I have experienced the following problem: If the computer is left for some period of inactivity, for 1-2 or more hours (the light on the drive is on and not blinking) I cannot access the drive and the OS message is "One touch is not responding". The only remedy is to restart the computer. My System consists of: WindowsXP SP2 and 512 MB Ram The Maxtor OneTouch II drive is connected via a firewire inlet of the computer, the file system being NTFS. The drive is partitioned unto 2 logical drives (~150 GB each)

I have Dell XPS w 2 hard drives. the master is 80gb(NTFS).."C" drive, and the slave is 120gb(FAT32)...."F" drivethe other day, after a re-start, Windows gave me the not so friendly message "Checking file system on F...the volume is dirty...windows is verifying files and folders.......0 percent complete"now, the problem is that it took 30 HOURS! before it completed its checkup! well, so before i panicked too much, i decided to buy an external drive to back up some stuff from the slave drive. after backing up about 20 gb worth of stuff, i re-started, and it did the same thing! tho this time it took "only" 18 HOURS to do its checking! it did say that "windows replaced bad clusters in files"

I've connected an external USB drive, but when I go to My Computer it shows it as a network drive. In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?

I turned the PC off to reboot when I though I was going into safe mode and went into regular mode instead. Now, it thinks one of my external drives is the C drive. On boot, I am getting a message that it cannot recognize find the system 32 windows config file (I'm paraphrasing).
I used the repair utility to get to the C prompt (which is pointed at the external drive) and checked the drive letters. I don't think the PC bios knows the hard drive is there.
I tried going into setup and reverting to factory installed configuration and that didn't change anything. I could not get it to recognize the hard drive.

I installed an a 2.5 Toshiba notebook drive in a external enclosure and I can't get XP to recognize it. The drive spins up and the light comes on to indicate it is running but nothing is shown in device manager or My computer. It also is not shown in disk management.I have uninstalled the the USB drivers through the device manager with no change after rebooting. The USB ports work fine with my other external drive. The drive was working fine in a notebook that had a
cracked screen. It is formated in NTFS. What else should I be looking at to solve this problem?

How do I most efficiently and with the least chance of data loss salvage the data from the partitioned hard drive? By using the enclosure or by hooking the drive up to the old box as a slave? And is the remaining OS on C: of the partitioned drive likely to cause any problems

I recently sent my computer for repair due to virus-related problems. Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just, well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.
I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)

My office has a number of mapped network drives for each user which, unfortunately, start at drive letter F.Each time a USB device is used on the computer it is also automatically assigned the drive letter F (presuming that C is hard disk and D and E are CD/DVD drives). This has to be manually changed from within Disk Management.Apparently this is as a result of physical drives taking precedent over the mapped network drives. Is there any workaround for this other than moving the mapped drive letters further along in the alphabet? - this is not really a feasible solution at this time.

My sis has one of those Wally-Mart Acer mini laptops; NO CD-ROM drive in it (PS: way-bad idea! Never buy a computer w/o a dvd/cd drive in it!). She managed to delete the graphics card driver and so when that occurred and rebooted, nothing on-screen! Its there, you just cannot see anything in windows! And, because there is no drive, the CD with all the original programs cannot be run in start-up mode without an external CD-ROM drive
I want to use my (HP Pavilion zv6000 w/XP) laptop as that external drive to re-load her original CD, which (of course) has all the drives on it! At start-up, the Acer (also w/XP) has an option to start-up from an ext. drive, so it has that capability (obviously, w/o a drive of its own), but how to make my HP "look" like an external drive (via USB-to-USB hookup) is the problem!

I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

If you get another hard drive cause yours is almost full and there fore messing with the virtual.memory. If you get an external harddrive is it better to move the pagefile to the new hard drive which is what I was going to do change the drive for the virtual memory, then I got thinking, in case you didn't use the external drive all the time hooked up for whatever reason they you wouldn't have a pagefile on the old one does that make sense? I thought maybe it would be better just to move a bunch of pics and music to the extenal drive and leave the virtual memory (pagefile) where it is on the old drive, or would it make any difference??
