My daughter and I installed her new 250 GB hd yesterday and installed XP; everything seems fine except the computer says 230 free of 232 GB, and it is a 250. The computer is a Dell Dimension 4300, 1.7 Mhz Intel Pentium 4, 700 RAM (512 + 254?).

View 19 Replies View RelatedOngoing USB problem. WinXP Pro system new Dell Vostro. Finally able to split the drive to 2 partitions. When 1st installing the drive the windows found new hardware and assigned letters. Worked great. At end of day i logged off the Vostro unit and turned off the USB drive. Next morning at sign on the USB drive was not functional until several connect and disconnect attempts. The device would show in the hardware manager and sometimes have yellow triangle and other times would appear as this device is working properly but no assigned letters.

View 12 Replies View Relatedhave a duel boot system with a legacy windows 2000 installation and a Windows XP Proffessional(SP2),I am able to access a 250GB second drive thru the windows 2000 installation but not with the XP.The Boot drive is 80Gb WD drive, and usually runs with another 80Gb WD drive. All drives are NTFS.I have SP2 installed with XP and understooed that access to large hard drives was set to default with the install of SP1.I have tryed to use the support pages at M$ which state that I need atapi.sys drivers (non existant in my XP), But the fix which they give won't install due to me having SP2 already.I think i just need to install latest atapi drivers and change the registry to enable large hard drives but i'm perplexed as to why they arn't already there.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI put in a new 2nd hard drive to my desktop, and when I start Windows XP, the drive does not show up under "Disk Management". This is the screen that comes up when you right click "My Computer", go to "Manage", and select "Disk Management". When I do this, there's a "Disk 0" for my original drive, and a "DVD-ROM" drive. But shouldn't there be a "Disk 1" for the 2nd drive? Is there some other driver that has to be installed for this? The drive did not come with an installation CD or anything. It's a Seagate 40gb SATA drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust recently my computer started doing the annoying thing where you try to type, but it freezes for a couple of seconds and then all the typing you did finally shows up. It does it when I try to scroll down a page, too; everything freezes for a few seconds before my cursor is responsive again. I have a fairly high-powered computer, and no extraneous programs are running. When I keep Task Manager running, I can see spikey activity in the CPU when these freeze-ups occur. I keep things well-defragged and spyware-free.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought the drive came home and installed in on a PC with XP SP_2.Stated the machine and it took forever to load up windows ( not normally like this )Went to start to transfer files over , and no disc to be found anywhere (?)Start/MyPc/properties/hardwareTab/device manager/ and there is nothing to indicate there is a USB hd connected to my machine .right click mypc/manage/discManagement and still no disc shows up in the menu .(?)restart the PC .NOW for the first time ever my pc takes forever to shut down and restart .when the pc restarts repeat the above and still no disc to be found anywhere .while plugged in and connected to the machine i unplug the power to the drive and plug it back in , now outta nowhere XP says it has found a new Seagate drive . YAY right , wrong. i restart my machine and the slow shutDown and restart is still happening (thumbs down )when the pc restarts ( finally ) i check the shortCut i made for the HD on my desktop , no hd icon just a grey box with a Question mark . so i unplug and plug the power cable as i did before and bang there it is again ( the hd).

The names of the folder are 15 characters long and are alphanumeric and have one subfolder in each named i386. And are ?0? in size. I first tried shift delete, ?Can?t remove access denied? I download and tried Erase. First with 1 pass, nothing? Not even an error! I went all out and did the Gutmann, 35 passes. Nothing and no error! The file just remains. For convenient sake I renamed the main folder to 1 and 2 and booted into the recovery consol and tried to delete it from there. Same thing! ?Can?t remove access denied? What the!!
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5000 with Vista home on it and it works OK, but I bought a larger HDD and I thought that I would put Windows XP PRO on it, I went from a Hitachi 160GB 2.5" SATA drive to a 250GB drive, same Manufacturer, the only difference in the drives is the original was a SATA 1.50 and the new drive is a 3.0, BIOS see's the drive and the XP disk does al the usual stuff, then it asks if you want to Install windows on it, so I click OK and then it says the windows cannot detect any HDD and aborts the installation, I know that the 2 SATA's are compatible and the only draw back is that the 3.0 may operate in the 1.5 mode in the worse case scenario, but windows doesn't see the drive at all.

WinXp, SP2 together with several minor programmes on C:I then used D: as a storage drive and have lots of valuable info on this drive including two websites. I have had a crash, and when I couldn't get C: up and running even trying the XP CD and using "R" repair wouldn't start, I then thought surely I will be able to format C: and re-install WIN XP, which I did.The pc is back running, but it has re-lettered the drives, C: , the CD ROM drive is now D: , and the 2nd hard drive is now E: (is this significant?) Now when I go to windows explorer or my computer when I click in the 2nd hard drive I get a message telling me this disc has not been formatted, Do I want to Format this?

This one has SATA drives rather than the IDE like my earlier one.I wanted to get some files off the old hard drives so purchased an Adaptec USB 2 Hard Drive Enclosure. It was recognized via plug and play (no drivers for the enclosure needed) and I was able to get some files off. However the next day when I tried to access the drive, it didn't show in Windows Explorer.I removed it from USB plug and tried the USB port next to the one I had previously tried. It recognized the drive and I was able to get more files.
However the same thing happened after I turned it off and rebooted the next day.I was unable to get it to work in either one of the front ports.I then tried one of the back ports, everything worked as before. Again, though, after turning it off, I am unable to access it through any of the 3 ports I've previously tried! What is going on? I still have stuff to get off it and I'm running out of ports.
I've got a very annoying problem with XP that I just can't figure out. I have spent hours and hours trying to fix this and posted on several forums to no avail, so any help would be much appreciated.My laptop died last week when I spilt water all over it. The harddrive was not effected and stayed completely dry.I am basically trying to save the data on the harddrive and completely wipe/format it.
I bought a 2.5" SATA > USB enclosure/caddy and put my laptop HDD into the enclosure. When I plugged the enclosure into my spare PC using the power/USB Y cable, the enclosure powers up and the LED light comes on. I can also feel/hear the laptop HDD inside spinning. A message comes up on the PC saying "New hardware found; USB mass storage device".
Cannot reformat it, because it's the only hard drive with my information left on it. The one it came from was totalled and there's no way to back it up.On startup, it recognizes that the hard drive is in. But it doesn't show up on My Computer.

The original problem was as follows: i rebooted with the cd and chose install xp (option 1.) Then it displays all of the available drives to format and install. Only my external hard drive (maxtor onetouch 300gb) was being displayed. Windows xp home with sp3.All has been rosey untill the connection where hard drive is placed onto the motherboard was broken. Not a problem I though as I have an enclosure to put the drive in then connect using the usb. All wired up I turned the computer on, nothing in the drive bay and the same hard drive in the enclosure connected via usb.

I had used this Forum a couple of months ago and doing the repair install was the recommended solution. I have a copy of the michaelstevenstech.com directions so I know what to do. My hard drive recently crashed and I reinstalled windows xp, the copy i brought with the product key turns out to me fake or blacklisted by Microsoft, the problem is i scanned the disc used for installation and it contain more than a few adware programs and viruses. My PC is operating noticeably slower than before the crash, I scanned my RAM with MemTest. There is also a couple adware programs that comes up in processes, only bitdefender blocks it from popping up when using the internet. Also my Primary IDE channel is using PIO Mode instead of DMA, ive heard this can be because of viruses, should I reinstall windows?Could this mean the windows has been modified and what should i do?

When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?

Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
