Sep 9, 2007
Cannot reformat it, because it's the only hard drive with my information left on it. The one it came from was totalled and there's no way to back it up.On startup, it recognizes that the hard drive is in. But it doesn't show up on My Computer.

Something unexplained happened and don't know if its related to the XP (SP2) op system, new clip art or Norton 2006 install--or something else. Seems the system has a difficult time finding "my computer" when you select it. A flash light appears and after several minutes, the screen finally appears with all the drives listed. But that's not all. When I'm in a program--Microsoft or others--and want to browse to find the correct file, image, etc. to open, the system locks/freezes and won't let you select or even find the right thing.

I've installed Win XP on a new drive and am now using my old boot drive as a slave, which I will now use for backup. Before I format my old drive and wipe it clean, I would like to copy the files from My Documents on the old drive and save them to my new drive. But I can't find those files on the old drive. Where is the My Documents folder on that drive?

I have been searching this site for possible threads relating to my problem, but couldn't find it. I apologize if I am redundant. Windows wont boot suddenly. It had worked fine for a long time till now. It shows the Windows XP logo, but wont show the user names to log in. I tried to boot from the windows XP CD, but when it tries to fix problems, a message appears saying that Windows couldn't find a hard drive. I checked my hard drive and its perfectly connected.

I've been trying to install Windows XP on a HP Compaq 6710b. It's my friends laptop, it shipped with Vista and she hates it so I'm giving her one of my copies of XP to use, because I'm so nice and whatnot. It boots into Windows Setup, checks everything, and then tells me that it can't find a hard drive for it to install Windows on, and the only option is to press F3 to restart. Is there some step I'm missing to turn on the hard drive before I install? Is this a problem with HP products, or have I just forgot to press some button?

I'm can't get WinXP installation to find my Sata Hard-drive. I'm running Suse Linux on my IDE-HD and I could also had no problems getting my Suse 10.1 installation to install on the SATA-HD. I've booted up with winxp media install disk and tried to use the F6 key at the right time but nothing happens so it keeps going until I get to the point where I can press the S key to install SATA RAID driver from disk that came with my motherboard. The drivers install but then windows install still says no disk to install windows... I don't get it.
I've checked my bios and SATA in there, in fact the first thing I see when I boot up in the boot sequence is the SATA drive. Linux knows it's there but windows install doesn't. I installed XP on a WD SATA drive before and all I had to do was press F6 to install the controller from the XP disk but that doesn't work now.

I use two hard drives, a smaller one that runs XP and a larger one for primarily storage. I replaced the storage drive...this had been the "first" drive and was labeled c: while the one running XP was labeled d:I installed the new drive and rebooted. In the process, the volume labels flipped: the primary drive became c: and the storage drive becoming d: This has thrown Windows into a world of confusion and all previously installed programs show up as uninstalled. They are still there in "program files" but many of them refuse to open, reporting not being able to find .dll files which I can search for and find on the computer.

I have a dell laptop with windows media center installed, as you know they come with a seperate partition for the backup files. For me backup files are not necessary, so I deleted the contents then installed WOW in its spot. Then later on I decided to merge this partition using partition magic. While merging my computer crashed. My C: drive is saying that it has the contents of the old partition, but it is not accessible or visible. I tried using partition magics drive mapper to make these files go into c: but it did nothing.

I'm trying to help my friend install XP Home on his Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. The laptop is currently running Vista, and he wants XP so that he can play KOTOR.The problem is that when I insert the CD and boot from it, the setup loads fine to the point where it gives the option to set up Windows XP, to repair Windows XP, etc. When I press enter to "set up Windows XP", it gives a message:"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard drsk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program

I have an HP Pavillion zv5000.Windows xp sp2.I was online and the laptop and got a blue screen of death
don't recall exactly what it said, something about ie encountering an error and needing to shut down.Went to reboot, and it tried to boot off of LAN.checked my BIOS everything seemed fine, disabled that boot option.
Tried to reboot again, got a plashing flat cursor in upper left hand corner.Tried to use Norton Disk, scanned memory only.Did not scan boot.Tried to use XP disk to repair, and it came up with screen saying that
it could not find any hard drives on this computer. What happened to me, is it viral, or hardware. This laptop is only a year old, but no longer under warranty.

This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3.I was trying to use ubuntu but my ram wasn't high enough, so now it won't let me run windows xp again.

I have a major problem with my Packard Bell iMedia D815AW home desktop. Ever since I installed a Lite-On DVD-RW into it, it started making a lot of noise (a bit like the sound of a typewriter tapping) and started crashing. I removed the DVD-RW drive, only for the problem to continue. The computer kept crashing (often showing the blue crash screen, other times showing a black 'insert floppy disk' screen, sometimes just restarting itself). Running the Windows disk check utility at start-up would not work - the computer would freeze while the disk scan occured (I tried many times). I ran disk registery programs (ie- Registry Mechanic, etc), anti-virus software, defragmentation, etc. etc. but the problem remained. Yesterday, I decided I would try reinstalling (or restoring?) Windows XP again (with the intention of fixing the problem without deleting my personal files on the computer). However, upon instertion of the disk, Windows XP claimed it could not reinstall, as the Windows version on my computer was too recent. I assumed that the reason for this was that I had installed Windows XP Serice Pack 2 and so the version was too recent for the installation disk. So, I thought I would uninstall service pack 2 and then try to reinstall Windows XP. However, while uninstalling service pack 2, the computer crashed. Since then, whenever I try to startup Windows, the computer restarts after about 30 seconds of loading. I can enter the startup screen which gives you access to entering through Safe Mode, Debugging, etc - however entering through these modes has the same problem though with the computer restarting before reaching Windows. So, I entered the computer BIOS at startup and changed it to load via CD, inserting the Windows XP disk. I tried to use the 'Recovery Console' option, however the error message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" showed. It then asked me to restart the computer by hitting F3. I then tried to use the Windows install option by restarting the computer and loading the Windows XP disk, but the same "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message showed. So, i cant load the computer, nor reinstall the software. I dont want to lose all the files on my computer.

Having been severely burnt by previous pc crashes I have built my last computer with two hard drives. I installed my o.s. WinXp, SP2 together with several minor programmes on C:I then used D: as a storage drive and have lots of valuable info on this drive including two websites. I have had a crash, and when I couldn't get C: up and running even trying the XP CD and using "R" repair wouldn't start, I then thought surely I will be able to format C: and re-install WIN XP, which I did.The pc is back running, but it has re-lettered the drives, C: , the CD ROM drive is now D: , and the 2nd hard drive is now E: (is this significant?) Now when I go to windows explorer or my computer when I click in the 2nd hard drive I get a message telling me this disc has not been formatted, Do I want to Format this?
