I've installed Win XP on a new drive and am now using my old boot drive as a slave, which I will now use for backup. Before I format my old drive and wipe it clean, I would like to copy the files from My Documents on the old drive and save them to my new drive. But I can't find those files on the old drive. Where is the My Documents folder on that drive?
View 5 Repliesi have a Compaq nx 7400 .i was hahving a lot of problems with the computer so i decided to put a new hard drive in and reinstall XP .
well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .
I recently got a new PC and stuck my old hard drive in. I can now open all my files except the ones under Documents and Settings. Access is denied comes up when i try to do anything with them. I tried the windows help, and it told me to go to the Security tab under options and take ownership, but there is no Security tab. What do I do? (Running XP Media Center, Old hard drive is set to D:)

1. His board is fried
2. took hard drive out, put in enclosure
3. transferring data to another external Hard Drive
4. when attempting to transfer "documents" he gets an access denied read out
5. Says he has no option to change system preferences
6. "taking control" hasn't worked
7. right clicking etc. hasn't worked
8. says when he tries to view documents he gets a "documents empty" read out and there is nothing there
Windows XP home cannot find 2nd hard drive, it does not show up in disk management. It does show up in the bios.At one point it did show up, healthy formatted NTFS drive.I was able to add a fileafter that it was gone.I have one user account, and GUEST account.I checked permissions and set them all to enable.

I am going to replace the hard drive, it's time for that anyway. I have the old hard drive connected to another computer as a second drive. I can see the file structure on the drive, but I can't see the files and folders in My Documents for my old profile. How can I access those files adn copy them to the good drive?

I tried to reboot using the recovery console on the windows CD but windows cannot find the Sata hard drive at all So I cant use the CD to reinstall windows over existing windows either I have access to another system, without a floppy drive but not sure what the best method of solving this problem is...Dont want to reformat as I have things on the H/D I need, I know I should have backed up...unfortunately I didnt, wont happen again though, lesson well and truly learned

It had worked fine for a long time till now. It shows the Windows XP logo, but wont show the user names to log in. I tried to boot from the windows XP CD, but when it tries to fix problems, a message appears saying that Windows couldn't find a hard drive. I checked my hard drive and its perfectly connected.

It's my friends laptop, it shipped with Vista and she hates it so I'm giving her one of my copies of XP to use, because I'm so nice and whatnot. It boots into Windows Setup, checks everything, and then tells me that it can't find a hard drive for it to install Windows on, and the only option is to press F3 to restart. Is there some step I'm missing to turn on the hard drive before I install? Is this a problem with HP products, or have I just forgot to press some button?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm can't get WinXP installation to find my Sata Hard-drive. I'm running Suse Linux on my IDE-HD and I could also had no problems getting my Suse 10.1 installation to install on the SATA-HD. I've booted up with winxp media install disk and tried to use the F6 key at the right time but nothing happens so it keeps going until I get to the point where I can press the S key to install SATA RAID driver from disk that came with my motherboard. The drivers install but then windows install still says no disk to install windows... I don't get it.
I've checked my bios and SATA in there, in fact the first thing I see when I boot up in the boot sequence is the SATA drive. Linux knows it's there but windows install doesn't. I installed XP on a WD SATA drive before and all I had to do was press F6 to install the controller from the XP disk but that doesn't work now.
Cannot reformat it, because it's the only hard drive with my information left on it. The one it came from was totalled and there's no way to back it up.On startup, it recognizes that the hard drive is in. But it doesn't show up on My Computer.

I plugged in my WD passport external hard drive into my USB port on my pc that has a newly installed copy of windows xp professional. The new hardware installer pops up, I chose the auto find drivers. Then it copied over called Initio. After that I got another little window asking to give the location of this missing file ivusbWxp86.sys.

Whenever I try to open a webpage saved to my desktop, before the page opens in the browser, I get a message saying Windows cannot find C:documents and settings. For the past year or so, for some reason my Broadcom 802.11g network adapter has been showing up as having a problem, which has meant that have not been able to use the wireless feature of the laptop. I have lived with it until tonight. I tried to fix it by trying to download a new driver, update the driver, restore settings to a previous date, ect. After nothing working, I decided to do a system recovery. When I did this, it gave me 2 options, one with backup and one without. I chose the backup option and it said everything would be saved to a "my backup" folder. I went through the process which took quite some time. It installed windows and I set the computer up. After everything, when I went to the my backup folder, it only has applications, NO DOCUMENTS. I have TONS of pictures and important documents on my computer that I now can not find. I am panicing as I truley hope I do not lose EVERYTHING. Is there any way to get this stuff back? I have done several searches and nothing comes up. Ironically, my wireless adapter is now working, but I would gladly go back to it not working to have all of my pictures back.

After checking the recycle bin and searching for hidden files and folders with no luck, I logged in as admin and looked at his C:documents and settings'username' folder and found that it was created on his original hire date in 2009. (nearly a year ago)

We bought it from best buy, and i guess they registered the computer to a 'valued customer' and its really annoying. Idk how the user name stuff works, but i think a while ago(not 100% positive cuz it was like 2 years ago) when we first got the computer i changed the admin 'valued customer' name to my name. but the 'my documents' folder defaulted to 'c:/documents and settings/valued customer' still. i fixed it by making a folder on c: with my name and made that folder the target location for the My Documents folder.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.
