I have had several customers who have had shutdown problems. The error message offers 2 choices: "End Now" and "Cancel." I think this is caused by part of the program being stuck in memory, but I'm not sure memory leak? more RAM, adjust VM or disk cache, ...??

Windows 2000 usually displays the username and password when i want to log on, and i just click OK and go to the desktop. However, upon turning it on today nothing appears, i press enter and it says to enter a username and password, Cancel is greyed out and there is no 'X' button.
I can't for the life of me find the username and/or password and have no rememberance as to the username or password in my head (never needed to remember it).
Is there anyway i can get round it? BIOS changes? password hackers? I really am looking for anything that might work

I created a password for the hidden admin account on my PC Now I can't unlock it even though I put the password in, in every possible combination! What does this mean for me? Is it possible to disable this password? I have admin rights attached to my working account (windows xp home), so does it even matter? I read that one should password protect the hidden admin account cos if it is infiltrated or hacked then all blimey could be let loose

My computer will not shut down. When I hit the "start" button and then select "shutdown" it goes through all of the motions, but then it reboots. It is almost as though it thinks that I am hitting the "restart" button instead of the "shutdown" button. When I followed the checklist in Windows, it suggested a restore point. I tried that but it said that I had made no changes to the computer since that restore point and therefore I could not use the restore point technique.

On my Toshiba laptop running W-XP SP2 it keeps getting 'locked up'. It locks up on shut down, booting, and launching programs. I had to wipe out my hard disk because I had to use the recover disk that came with this Toshiba junk Right now it is locked up with the Spysweeper screen up an the error message is "THIS PROGRAM CANNOT BE CLOSED BECAUSE IT IS LOCKED BY THE SYSTEM"!!! Got that when I did Ctrl/Alt/Del. When it locks on shut down I get same message, and same when locks on boot. Only way out seems to be UNPLUG!!! I've already lost everything anyways so it don't matter. Is this a TOSHIBA issue or a W-XP Home Edition SP2 issue?

I installed "The Lock XP" on my system and when I restarted I was locked out of everything. I have already contacted Tech Support for "The Lock XP" and I was talking to her for three days trying to figure this out...and well she was unable to. So here is where we left off...
I cannot load Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/Networking, or Safe Mode w/Command Prompt. When I do try to load a Safe Mode, except "Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)" it loads, says it is starting windows and then restarts. I cannot access C: Drive, cmd.exe, notepad.exe, I cant download, but can access the internet by double-clicking on Windows Internet Explorer. Here is a list of Running Programs on my system when Windows Loads, which is the same when loaded in "Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)" :
1) alg.exe Local Serivce 1,040K
2) avgupsvc.exe System 576K
3) CDAC11BA.EXE System 428K
4) csrss.exe System 1,584K
5) ctfmon.exe Don Steffic 1,216K
6) explorer.exe Don Steffic 9,984K...

A friend of mine gave me a few computers- because his office was upgrading all of their systems- I reformatted many of them and installed windows me (they are too slow to support xp), but I am having a problem with one. Originally it had windows 2000 pro as the os( I didn't have the password to log-into the computer) So I ran fdisk, formatted the hard drive, then tried to install the new os but I keep getting the error message upon booting that "invalid system disk, remove then press any key to continue".
I thought the cd-rom was bad so I replaced it, I changed the boot sequence, used a floppy to boot, even got the hard drive manufacturer's utility program to prep the drive for the os but even that doesn't work. Am I missing something? Does the fact that I didn't have the password to enter the computer have anything to do with this? I used this same method for installing me on all the other systems and they are fine, but this one is an issue.

A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restartThis is what my compaq lap top is saying upon restart. Using XP, I do not have any recovery or diagnostic disks.I have a new laptop and was using the compaq as a back- up. I hadn't used it much in the last month or so and when I turned it on, it was unusually slow.I attempted to defrag the hard drive, and it initialized(after it analyzed). During this time windows shut it down for an update to take effect. Upon restart, this is the message I got: A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.

I did a system restore on my laptop after recklessly cleaning files off of my hard drive. Since then I can't access my d:/, so I can't reinstall anything, including my internet and Microsoft Office software. If I look in the control panel I can see everything (I didn't lose any personal files), but D: always comes up as D:/RECOVERY, then fiendishly warns me not to look inside (which I haven't).

I’m having problems with my laptop, which started today. Whilst browsing the internet the system locked up, leaving me with no alternative than to hold down the power button until the system turned off. When I turned the computer back on it froze shortly after logging on, before going to a blue screen saying,
‘A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc00000005, 0xEE1A8B3A, 0xF70E97E8, 0x00000000)
Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk: xx’
I’ve booted Windows several times and the hex addresses all stay the same. I’m thinking it might be useful to upload the memory dumps, but don’t know how to do this. I have made several small attempts to repair the system. Firstly I started the computer in safe mode and scanned the hard drive using AVG Free, which (surprisingly) found several Trojans and other viruses. This made no difference when starting the computer, so I pressed F8 again when Windows was starting and chose ‘Last Known Good Configuration’ which again made no difference. Finally I started the computer in ‘Safe mode with Command Prompt’ and ran ‘chkdsk’ which found no errors...........

I have given my 40GB ATA HDD to my friend to fetch some movies he has got in his 160GB SATA HDD. He configured my HDD as secondary master and copied all the movies to mine. Later he removed my HDD and rebooted the system to find that his HDD isn't booting up. He says that his HDD isn't being detected in the BIOS. The well known error message "No bootable device found. Insert system disk and press Enter" appears every time he tries to boot his system. What can the solution other than formatting?( Formatting isn't favourable as there is critical data in the HDD).

When I try to run Defrag I get a message that a pending CHKDSK must be run at startup (I did not request a CHKDSK, apparently XP did it). When I startup a message flashes up saying "Can not open volume for direct access". The XP startup then continues but leaves the pending CHKDSK active so I can not Defrag.

I started to install sp3 and then changed my mind. I clicked "cancel" while it was trying to install itself, and it stopped. Now my machine still thinks it hasn't been installed, so I can't just delete the whole thing from "add/remove programs" because it doesn't appear. I did review the list of added programs including updates, and it's not there. How do I remove it so I don't get the yellow shield on the task bar?

first i get the HP blue screen. I tried F1, but i dont see my hard drive in the boot menu. I followed some steps in Hp's web site- took the cpu apart and unplugged both hard drives from the motherboard, plugged them back in. when i restarted ,i got the HP screen and then windows started to load up. After a few seconds the HP screen came back up and then the black screen: sk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. I also noticed that pressing F10 for system recovery does nothing.
