What does this mean for me? Is it possible to disable this password? I have admin rights attached to my working account (windows xp home), so does it even matter? I read that one should password protect the hidden admin account cos if it is infiltrated or hacked then all blimey could be let loose

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently had a problem with my computer so I boot up my recovery cd. Soon everything was working fine and I installed some programs that I used to have. However, a few days ago, everything went weird again. (But in a different way before I used the recovery cd.)All the installers didn't work. They all had errors halfway through. They created empty folders in the program files and they can't be removed. Most things in the program files now can't be removed. I also can't install some other programs and the error messages were something like I didn't have access. But I was on the administrator account. I'm sure the installers weren't corrupted because one of them was the iTunes installer.. When even that couldn't be installed,

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just started my Dell the other day and as the subject says, it didn't boot and went to a blue screen which said something along the lines of.it gave me options to start in Safe mode and a few others or to start at the last point where everything was ok. I choose this option and windows started without a hitch and I didn;t notice anything out of place or missing. I've done a few restarts since then and nothing out of the ordinary has happened since.BUT, then today I was loading some more programs on my recently formatted laptop. One of them being Perfect Disk 8 (trial) and WinPatrol alerted me to the startup entries. One of them being PDEngine, the other PDAgent. I'm assuming Perfect Disk caused this error on the Dell. Anyone have any Idea as to what may have happened. now I'm afraid to use the program on either comp.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm looking at a lap top for a friend. When it boots up, it starts normally and then on a black screen it says that windows did not start successfully. It gives a list of ways to boot up, safe mode safe mode with network, some others, then last known good config. None work. Which ever I try I then get a blue screen with "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage. An attempt was make to write to read only memory." It then tells me if it's the first time I'm seeing the screen that I should reboot etc.

Now, when I try to boot, I get the message that "ootmapi.dll was not found, reinstalling the application may fix the problem". I have tried safe mode, last known good config, and even a live Windows CD I made through Bart PE (an amazing program). I have alot of information I NEED on my hard drive. I was about to back up my data-it seems as if computers decide to stop working at the worst possible time . Please post all possible solutions and a step by step guide to reinstalling windows through my Windows CD.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter turning the computer on that my taskbar and desktop didn't appear. I went to Task Manager and used the "run" command and typed "explorer.exe" and try to load it up that way. It did load up, but the thing is, it blinked on, and then was turned off. Right now I'm using the Task manager to do everything I'm doing right now. I'm pretty sure that this is a virus, but I want to be completely sure.
I was having problems with my computer and a BSOD that pointed to my hd. I decided to reinstall XP but then decided to try a repair first. The repair seems to work to an extent as pc starts fine now and seems to load normally etc. However upon starting I noticed the desktop had reverted back to default, my programs weren't listed in the start menu and favorites were gone. I was guessing that it wiped my hd like I had done a re-install. So I went to copy some of my backed up files but when I went into My Computer I see that all my files are still there under C:Documents&SettingsOwner like before. But also under Documents & Settings are these folders now.

After that when I switch it on, the windows progresses until the screen with blue button running right-left left-right for couple of seconds and then: black screen and nothing.I tried safe startup - it worked OK. I performed recovery to yesterday savepoint, but the result remains the same as above.

1) since i only have the genuine lisence key (attached behind my laptop), how should i format my laptop since IBM didnt provide any Windows Xp Cd
2) Why my C drive and some few folders in the C drive are name in "Blue"?
I recently had to change my hdd for a new one before it crashes, installed XP with SP3 integrated, ran the intel motherboard cd and sound and internet connections were ok, didn't surf the web too long because i wanted to install the antivirus first.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAbout ten days ago my Acer Aspire E360 (AMD 64 X2 3800, 2gb - Win Media Center 2005) started giving BSOD errors at startup. It would to into safe mode but no trouble shooting worked. Finally it wouldn't boot at all giving me the: NTLDR missing error. I downloaded the ISO that 'fixes' this error and it didn't work, saying that hal.dll was missing. My recovery disks - 6 in all - are available but when I booted from them they said that it would erase the entire C drive. In the meantime I downloaded ISOs to test the disk and the memory. Disk was fine, but there was one very bad memory stick, which I've replaced.
I don't want to lose the C: data. I did do an Acronis 10 backup just before it went totally down, but I'm not sure that the bad memory stick didn't corrupt data that's now backed up. A friend gave me a copy of a WinXP Pro (without serial number) to see if I could use the repair function. However, he only copied the files and did not clone the disk so it's not bootable. Using another computer I used Nero (Caldera DOS) to make a bootable disk. Unfortunately when I tried to boot up with it I got a warning: "EMM386 - address line A20 already enabled." and then it froze.
I recently reformatted my HP Pavilion laptop back to Windows XP. I didn't back the specs up, so now in the Device Manager, it has a lot of black exclamation marks in yellow circles. I installed Belarc onto it using a flash drive and this is what I got:....

SanDisk U3 Cruzer Micro USB Device [CD-ROM drive]
FUJITSU MHY2160BH [Hard drive] (160.04 GB) -- drive 0
SanDisk U3 Cruzer Micro USB Device (2.05 GB) -- drive 1 1984 Megabytes Installed Memory

I've just tried turning my computer on this morning and it's not quite working - I'm on a friends computer at the moment.I'm running window XP, I have recently had some help from the 'spyware, malware' section of this forum in removing some virus's and trojans, we managed to stop all the intial problems however now. When I turn the system on, it does it's first page fine (the one that has the system information) then goes to the screen that says "windows didn't start successfully, a recent hardware or software change might have caused this" and gives me the start up options of 'safe mode', safe mode with networking', 'safe mode with command prompt', 'start windows normally' and 'last known good configuration'. I've selected all the options once and they all do the same thing - once selected it goes to the windows xp screen and looks likes it's loading then a blue screen with some information on it pops up for a micro second, the system then restarts itself and goes back to the safe mode options screen.

I'm scared to try and interpret for my own use. I have 81 processes running and have no idea which ones I can disable and which ones to not. I'm always nervous about messing with that. But, am I right in thinking that disabling something in the MSCONFIG thing at startup won't affect the program??? Can you still get to it? It just won't start up automatically, right? So, could I hurt anything if I disabled alot? So, how could I give you a list of all the processes running? I'm also having a problem with the xp update. I'm always showing that I need to update, but when I do this one part always fails. Here is what it says.
Security Update for Microsoft.net framework, Version 1.1 Service KB928366 didn't update. I'm not sure why, but it won't ever update. Also, in AOL I get an error message constantly which says this: A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug. Line:? Error: Object Expected. I have no idea what that means and what or how to debug. I have tried repeatedly to uninstall and reinstall AOL but it keeps happening. Does anyone know what that means.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was doing a clean up with Ccleaner etc and in my haste I did not take note of what I was clicking. Spybot Search and Destroy flashed up and I clicked to allow, or not allow as the case may be, to do something to, from what I can remember, 'WLON' or something similarly named. In any case, what happens now is that I fire up the computer, enter my password, the desktop briefly flashes up for a split second(no icons) and then it immediately logs off and goes to password entry again.
