Repair Didn't Fix Damaged .dll - Cannot Boot
Sep 17, 2006
I have a DELL with an OEM installation CD. I un-installed a crappy program which just corrupted the file ootmapi.dll. Now, when I try to boot, I get the message that "ootmapi.dll was not found, reinstalling the application may fix the problem". I have tried safe mode, last known good config, and even a live Windows CD I made through Bart PE (an amazing program). I have alot of information I NEED on my hard drive. I was about to back up my data-it seems as if computers decide to stop working at the worst possible time . Please post all possible solutions and a step by step guide to reinstalling windows through my Windows CD.

I was having problems with my computer and a BSOD that pointed to my hd. I decided to reinstall XP but then decided to try a repair first. The repair seems to work to an extent as pc starts fine now and seems to load normally etc. However upon starting I noticed the desktop had reverted back to default, my programs weren't listed in the start menu and favorites were gone. I was guessing that it wiped my hd like I had done a re-install. So I went to copy some of my backed up files but when I went into My Computer I see that all my files are still there under C:Documents&SettingsOwner like before. But also under Documents & Settings are these folders now.

I'm having all sorts of problems with my computer (Windows Explorer shutting down, DVD drive not reading blank or used DVD+Rs correctly, etc). Tried to repair using SFC /Scannow but since it says that there are files that are missing or replaced by other files it asks for the SP2 CD- which I don't have since it was an automatic download.
1. Any way to remove SP2? It's not listed in the add/remove programs?
2. If I put in the SP1a CD, will it repair Windows to the SP1A setting WITHOUT causing me to lose all my data?
3. Are there problems with the updates from last week because all the problems started after the seven automatic downloads.
4. Can I download the SP2 somewhere online and run it to correct the problems?

I just started my Dell the other day and as the subject says, it didn't boot and went to a blue screen which said something along the lines of.it gave me options to start in Safe mode and a few others or to start at the last point where everything was ok. I choose this option and windows started without a hitch and I didn;t notice anything out of place or missing. I've done a few restarts since then and nothing out of the ordinary has happened since.BUT, then today I was loading some more programs on my recently formatted laptop. One of them being Perfect Disk 8 (trial) and WinPatrol alerted me to the startup entries. One of them being PDEngine, the other PDAgent. I'm assuming Perfect Disk caused this error on the Dell. Anyone have any Idea as to what may have happened. now I'm afraid to use the program on either comp.

About ten days ago my Acer Aspire E360 (AMD 64 X2 3800, 2gb - Win Media Center 2005) started giving BSOD errors at startup. It would to into safe mode but no trouble shooting worked. Finally it wouldn't boot at all giving me the: NTLDR missing error. I downloaded the ISO that 'fixes' this error and it didn't work, saying that hal.dll was missing. My recovery disks - 6 in all - are available but when I booted from them they said that it would erase the entire C drive. In the meantime I downloaded ISOs to test the disk and the memory. Disk was fine, but there was one very bad memory stick, which I've replaced.
I don't want to lose the C: data. I did do an Acronis 10 backup just before it went totally down, but I'm not sure that the bad memory stick didn't corrupt data that's now backed up. A friend gave me a copy of a WinXP Pro (without serial number) to see if I could use the repair function. However, he only copied the files and did not clone the disk so it's not bootable. Using another computer I used Nero (Caldera DOS) to make a bootable disk. Unfortunately when I tried to boot up with it I got a warning: "EMM386 - address line A20 already enabled." and then it froze.

I have a dell PC with windows XP Media Center installed. I think that a virus damaged the boot sector in fact I cannot start my PC.
All I am able to get to is the BIOS or the diagnostics tool, F8 doesn't work, which means I cannot restart in safe mode or last known good configuration and if I use alt+F11, which is the option you have on Dell PC to reformat it in order to have everything the way it was at the time you bought it, it doesn't work.
A friend of mine told me to boot from the CD and then use the fixboot command, the problem is that DELL does not give OS CDs anymore and I honestly do not know what to do

I have a damaged Windows XP CD and do not think its fair I pay just to request the info in getting it replaced. I saw this option and wanted to see if I could get something done about it.
I have a damaged OEM CD and the expired CDKEY that came with it from maximum activations as I was having BSOD problems which then was discovered to be bad RAM. The company I bought it from is now bankrupt and non-existant. Now I am left with a CD that makes a great coaster and a CDKEY that has expired from activation. When I first installed it 1 support request was already used? I had made one request and registered it with Microsoft so it has to be on archive even if it hasn't been used.Since I can't copy and paste.

I have a new laptop that came with Windows Vista. I have been trying to load it with Windows XP because Windows Vista didnt work. I am pretty sure a format and clean install will wreck my warranty, hence the dual boot. So far, I have been able to partition and install XP SP-2 to a partition. I've booted into XP fine but my Vista partition is not available. I think that the partition table or MBR has been corrupted.
So to repair this, what I did was boot up from the Vista recovery DVD and run the 'startup repair' option to reload the bootloader for Vista and thus, enable dual booting. When I rebooted I got a black screen saying 'Invalid Partition Table' or something to this effect. I tried repairing the MBR and so on and so forth from the console on the recovery DVD but this proved to be pretty much totally fruitless. So I went through and did an install of Windows XP once again, to my other drive partition I had created. So I am basically where I started.

I've done a bit of searching on here and thought I'd found a way out of my problem but it seems not. Briefly my PC keeps looping on start up, it won't start in safe mode, last known config etc, so after reading here I've popped in a XP CD to do a repair but from instructions I didn't chose the 'r' function but pressed 'enter' to start the setup. I accepted the licence agreement and the PC found 2 partitions but I don't get the option to 'repair'. All I can do is 'end' the setup as I don't want to wipe my data

My W2K program is not a boot disk version, so you need to make a series of four (4) boot flopies. I need to get to the "REPAIR" option presumably located on one of the four floppies I made- question is, where is it located and how do I get to it?

I have tried FIXMBR, FIXBOOT and now trying to reinstall using the guide in another thread. I do not get the same R option when I get to the SETUP screen. It looks to me like it will fresh install XP and wipe everything. Originally I was getting missing SYSTEM file and boot stops. I found what I thought was the SYSTEM file and put it into the directory but it still will not boot. I just get another new error.

Can someone please tell me if I can use a Windows XP Professional disk to repair a Windows XP Home Edition unmountable boot volume? My sister-in-law's Dell Dimension 8400 is getting that error when she starts the PC. She can't locate the disks that came with the PC and I only have an XP Pro disk. I repaired my laptop using recovery console about a year ago but that is XP Pro also.

I have just installed some anti virus software and during installation I got messages saying my registry had been damaged and i should log onto such-and-such site to download repair software and run it on my system. I am suspicious that if I do this I am exposing myself to total destruction. One of the messages has just popped up again and the site it directs me to is FixReg32.com.

Problems started was when i updated my Zone Alarm firewall, windows works absolutely fine no problems what so ever, then next time i reboot it does the same, this time problems are non-stop until about 10% then fine from there on in, then when it finishes repairing the drive it gets stuck at repairing unreadable security descriptions date stream.
It also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files. It stopped for a while then carried on. After scan disk it restarted and wouldn't load windows, just got stuck on windows loading screen forever, eventually 15+ minutes i pressed reset as there was no disk activity.

I recently had a problem with my computer so I boot up my recovery cd. Soon everything was working fine and I installed some programs that I used to have. However, a few days ago, everything went weird again. (But in a different way before I used the recovery cd.)All the installers didn't work. They all had errors halfway through. They created empty folders in the program files and they can't be removed. Most things in the program files now can't be removed. I also can't install some other programs and the error messages were something like I didn't have access. But I was on the administrator account. I'm sure the installers weren't corrupted because one of them was the iTunes installer.. When even that couldn't be installed,

I'm looking at a lap top for a friend. When it boots up, it starts normally and then on a black screen it says that windows did not start successfully. It gives a list of ways to boot up, safe mode safe mode with network, some others, then last known good config. None work. Which ever I try I then get a blue screen with "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage. An attempt was make to write to read only memory." It then tells me if it's the first time I'm seeing the screen that I should reboot etc.

After turning the computer on that my taskbar and desktop didn't appear. I went to Task Manager and used the "run" command and typed "explorer.exe" and try to load it up that way. It did load up, but the thing is, it blinked on, and then was turned off. Right now I'm using the Task manager to do everything I'm doing right now. I'm pretty sure that this is a virus, but I want to be completely sure.
