I bought a new maxtor 250 gig hd and set it to be master drive C. I had a 80gig hd that came with my dell. I set it to slave drive E for storage reformatted it clean. For some reason on restart or bootup chkdsk runs on drive E. Finds no problems. Never has. I am running xp home sp2

When you start it up chkdsk attempts to run and if you hit any key in the allowed time period it does not just skip chkdsk as it has in the past, it continues to reboot again and again. Even if you let the chkdsk utility run it just reboots when its finished and we're back to square one. How do we disable chkdsk or Autochk.exe if that's what is happening and will this solve the problem maybe?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently formatted my HD and run Partition Magic to create 5 partitions but now every time I reboot, CHKDSK runs to check each drive, but doesn't find any problems. My drives and labels are as follows; O.S.(C), DVD Drive(D), DVD/CD-RW(E), Data(F), Games(G), Video(H), Music(I). I'm running twin WD 250 GB HD in a RAID 1 configuration. 30 GB dedicated to (C) and the rest are split to contain between 50 to 60 GB. I've also adjusted the cluster size to 16K. File system is NTFS and os is Win XP Pro. I haven't installed any antivirus or firewall because I'm not connected to the internet yet. Also no progs running on startup. This is a fresh HD with nothing installed except os and drivers. Partitioning was fairly easy and straight-forward so I'm really scratching my head to figure out what is wrong.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery time I open Windows XP, I get a message saying "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" Then it runs a chkdsk.It reports no errors and opens as usual.Then if I try to defrag the disk that is checked, I get a message saying Diskeeper has detected that CHKDSK is scheduled to run. This is due to a user request or because the Operating System has found errors in the file system.I have run Chkdsk on this drive, but no errors have been found.I have not scheduled Chkdsk to run on this drive.If I then try to reboot, the same procedure occurs again and check disk does not report any errors.
View 8 Replies View RelatedChkdsk runs at startup due to me resizing and shifting my NTFS partition to the left. Running "fsutil dirty query C:" returns the message: Volume - C: is Dirty. I know this problem can be solved by running chkdsk but I also know from prior experience that it will cause a lot of problems. I'm not having any problems. Windows XP is running very fast and works just fine. I just know from experience that if I allow chdsk to run that it will mess with my OS.At boot it gives me the option of not allowing chkdsk to run, which I don't. View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I set CHKDSK to run at next restart, it does NOT display the usual CHKDSK text interface with the runnning progress of the operation. Instead it runs while displaying the Windows Logo screen, not with a running progress bar like ususal though. The logo screen color pallette freezes until CHKDSK is done, then the machine reboots like normal. What happened to my CHKDSK text display? This also happens when I set Diskeeper 7.0 to run at boot time. Instead of the Diskeeper text display, it does the same thing as CHKDSK. Any ideas?

(2 of 3) It then says "Correcting error in index $I30 for the file 106330" (twice)And then "sorting index $ I30 in file 106330" Then it just stand like that (waited 3 hrs).There is no sort of "work noise" or lights from the machine, just the fans.. Classes don't start for spring until the end of the week, so I can't have my professors help me, so I'm using fourms to fix my problem. Here it is:I'm currently working on a Dell Inspirion 1501, AMD 64x Dual Core, 1GB RAM, 100 GB HDD, Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP2.The original problem was a registry error message that was coming up at startup, and Internet Explorer 7 would not load the Internet even though everything with the Local Area Connection was fine.These problems were fixed by: Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7, and running TuneUp2008, which has a registry cleaner, which fixed several problems. Everything seemed to work fine after this; up until I attempted to use Spyware Blaster and Ad-Aware. The computer was not allowing them to access the internet.Checked the Windows Firewall, and added the programs to the exceptions list, still nothing.
Then I realized that they had Norton Internet Security 2006 installed, so figuring that it was the Norton firewall blocking those programs I attempted to open Norton. The program would not open, and would freeze. After several unsuccessful attempts to uninstall Norton, (I was recieving some error message aboue being logged into Norton as an Admin user, but since Norton would not open, I could not do this) I found the solution on the internet, a file from Symtematec, I ran it, and it said that it would be completely uninstalled after the next restart, so I restarted.
Since I restarted from uninstalling Norton, Chkdsk runs at every startup. First it runs a 3-stage check, finds no problems, then reboots. At the next reboot, chkdsk will run again, this time with a 5-stage check. After hours and hours of chkdsk just repeatedly running on a loop, I attempted to boot in safe mode, which was unsuccessful. I'm also not able to boot into Last Known Good Config, it just starts the chkdsk again. The only thing I AM able to do, is run the WinXP CD at bootup and run the recovery console, but I'm not sure what I need to be fixing or doing within the Recovery Console.
WIN XP Pro SP3 (+NortonSecurity2009) Two days ago & ongoing: On BootUp CHKDSK NTSF started running automatically on Blue Screen every time I turn on the computer. "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" and proceeds to check C: for 'Files' 'Indexes' and 'Security Descriptors.' (command line 'parameters' are needed for all these) Then Windows boots up normally. When I went to defrag I was not allowed to proceed because of CHKDSK and something about damaged files. Where did this CHKDSK automatic behavior come from & what is it doing? Is my disk corrupted? Will all my files get eaten from the inside out? (BTW-this "DUMMIE" [me] has NO backup) At the Very Same Time - My Norton Anti-Virus became Completely Disabled. An icon appeared on my desktop where I've not had one before - but I cannot access the program from there, from Start-AllPrograms, or even from C:ProgramFiles, open, run. Nothing. The System-Tray Norton icon is gone too! Tried to download a quick, free good antivirus program for right-now protection: AVG and/or Avast - both failed. My behind is hanging in the breeze. (hoping that Windows little Virus Protection & the Firewall will do ok short-term) I've run Malwarebytes, Spy-Bot, & Terminator, but those aren't AntiVirus. HELP! These issues look like maybe 2 separate problems? Maybe not. Has something really bad gotten in? I'm really stuck! Is CHKDSK the priority if there is corruption of the HD, or is AV the priorty? View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I run chkdsk, read only, it tells me that it found problems in the master file table and in the files and to run chkdsk /f. I do so and am told that the corrections will be made upon reboot.
Well, I reboot, and it goes through the three tasks (never telling me that corrections have, in fact, been made) then it reboots into Windows XP Pro. When I run chkdsk again, I get the same prompt, saying that files need to be fixed (see attached screenshot of command prompt's chkdsk).
1st I use internet explorer for my web browser. At work when I click on it it pops right up with out even thinking about it Page loads with in 10 seconds every time. At home. Some times it will take 30 seconds to a minute to start after I click on it.2nd issue is this Occasionally I will come into my computer after not using it for 8-10 hours or so and I will have a ton (sometimes 40+) Error messages that say "unable to launch restart.exe".I can close all of them but then the computer runs like a tank. I always have to do a hard shut down after this too.It will NOT restart using the proper methods just hangs up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a thread on here before, but it got deleted so I'm starting a new one with fresh new problem.I set chkdsk /r to run on system startup, and it ran but took forever to scan file data (I left it running for 4 days) so I rebooted but it started chkdsk again! Theres obviously something telling it to run the scan on next startup because it never finished the first time. Now if I run it it just freezes at 0% for checking file data.It I go into startup options and tell it to boot in safe mode, it shows it loading all the drivers and then pauses and says "Press Esc to cancel loading a347bus.sys" and whether I press Esc or not it freezes. If I do last known good configuration, it runs into the chkdsk problem again.

But when I boot the machine up. And select the slave drive, none of the files, such as pictures, word docs, etc. are there. The folders are blank. The jumper pin setting is correct because the picture is right on the label for the drive

Like the title says, everytime i turn my machine on the windows page appears on start and the load bar just keeps going. I left this running for an hour and nothing happened.
I have read tons of stuff and tried loads of stuff and yes you guessed it nothing has sorted it out.
My computer knowledge isnt great so if this requires Bios work or Command prompts i will need some detailed help.

Problem with XP pro finding slave drive, I installed a 200 Gig maxtor drive set up as a slave funny thing it see's the drive in defrag but it does not see it in My Computer or Explorer, I have uninstalled it and installed it 2 or 3 times and when I do it installs the Maxtor slave back and even say's your new hardware is installed and ready to use but you can't see it except in defrag now that is a new one for me.

Or will it still read as a slave drive with no OS files? I have to do this because my friend lost his Win XP Pro SP1 disk, and all I have is a Win XP Pro disk with no SP on it, I have a separate downloaded SP1 file, but if I try to use that, it will chop their harddrive from 200 gigs down to 130'ish, like it did with my 160 gig drive Or maybe I could create a new Windows install CD with SP1 on it already.

Disk management sees the drive but will not allow me to access the drive. The drive is displayed as "Healthy" but when I attempt to access the drive, it says the drive must be formatted. I have tons of data I need on that hard drive.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have gont ot XP fro 2000 and had my 2 Maxtor slave drives on a SI l680 ATA 133 controler card. I was unable to get XP to load with the card so I removed it and after replacing it the drives do not show up. They are in the Bios and the driver for the card is in and working corectly. I took one off and made it a secondary on the to the boot and they still are gone.

Last year I replaced the main drive after four years of use with a Western Digital drive. recently on boot up, the system can no longer detect either the primary master or the primary slave drives. It does se the secondary slave as my Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-812s. Other than the master drive going away,(hopefully not) Is there any suggestions on what may have happened? The Asus MBO is 5 years old by the way.
View 7 Replies View RelatedShe finally informed me today that when she installed XP (upgrade cd) to her W98SE system, that she now only has 400MB left on the drive because she started off with only a 6GB drive (I built the system years ago and that's all she needed at that time and since until XP). She just bought a new 200GB WD drive but wants to copy her current drive to the new one rather than start from scratch. Since I'm not there with 'hands on' and this lunatic is the one who will be doing this while I'm on the phone with her, I need to know if the WD cd is bootable or do I have her hook up the drive in a slave position, get to the desktop, and then prepare the drive with the cd at that point AND then be able to copy the current drive to the new one from within windows?
If the WD cd is bootable, I'm assuming the onscreen instructions will give options to format the drive and then copy it, right? I've never used the harddrive tools for any of this, but don't want to walk her through how I normally do this as I'll end up early in the game going the same route as the movie Ya-Ya Sisterhood and be banging the phone on the desktop. She's already argued with me when I told her she didn't have to jumper the drive as a slave with the new cable that came with the drive.....because she's reading the freaking instructions (the very ones she never understands in the first place, but she knows better when I'm not right in her face and within arm's reach)
I have an 160 Gb wD hardrive set to master on my Asus P4p800e deluxe mother.....I would like to know If I could add an extra hardrive sata as a slave...The reason for this is becuase I want to keep diffrent files in here...But I don' know id this could be done...Do I need to dual Boot and install the same Operating system in the Sata...I know my motherboard supports sata Ide and Raid disks...and if its not possible ...Can you tell me another way to add a second drive without dual booting,...I just want my drive to appear in my computer so I could save different files

My plan now was to change the 300G drive to the Master drive. I reformatted, booted from my XP disc & installed the OS on the "new" 300G drive. Then I switched the jumper & cable so it was in the master position.and nothing.
It starts up, tells me to hit F2 for setup or F1 to continue. When I hit F1, it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, but no command line
