Installed And Slave Drive, Can't Read Files On Slave
Feb 21, 2005I just installed Windows Xp on a brand new HDD. The previous hard drive had Windows 2000, and since I didn't want to lose any files I installed that drive as the slave. But when I boot the machine up. And select the slave drive, none of the files, such as pictures, word docs, etc. are there. The folders are blank. The jumper pin setting is correct because the picture is right on the label for the drive

Sep 29, 2007I have recently started my old HP PC up, and it's not looking good. It's so old that it basically makes itself useless, even though it runs iTunes.
Anyway, it's got a bunch of junk on it that I don't have the time to sift through. It hardly runs right, and when it does run, it freezes up on everything. Here are its (horrible) specs:
HP Vectra w/ a Pentium III 501Mhz Processor (yeah I know, it's not 500 lol)
8GB HD
256MB of RAM
It practically sucks but it's surprising how well it runs on this CPU and RAM. Before iTunes 7 came out, iTunes worked almost as well as on a Mac (but we know that will never happen lol). Now, it has problems connecting to my wireless network because I have locked up my Wi-Fi security. I also have a surprising amount of junk on it even though the HD is old and has just 8GB.
What I wan to do is switch out the board, but I have done that yet. What I DO NEED TO DO is wipe the entire drive clean, and reinstall XP. Why? Because there's so much stuff on it and it seems to have a virus slowing it down. I have no idea if it actually has one, but I suspect it due to its recent performance. I DON'T have the install disks.
Should I just try to wipe it clean with my Mac somehow (instructions for Disk Utility for this would help a lot)? Should I swap the board and just buy a brand new, clean copy of XP? as I can't get on the machine and try to fix it myself. And, no, I'm not typing this on it.
Unable To Format And Install.
Apr 13, 2008My laptop has been over run with viruses and I've taken out 10 but my laptop is still a mess so I want to do a fresh install. I backed up all my data and went to boot from cd after restarting but it won't boot. I changed the boot order so the cdrom is first but it doesn't spin or anything at startup....it just goes to the windows loading screen and doesn't give me a option to boot from a cd. I also have an external cd drive if that helps....but I tried that and I can't boot from startup. Is there any way I can reformat my hard drive without using the windows cd at startup?? What can I do to get my cd to boot? The cd drive works fine but I just can't get it to work at startup. I am totally lost without my laptop. I am having to use my moms computer to type this so someone tell me what all I can do to get my hard drive reformatted and a fresh install of windows put on my laptop.

Hence I went about formatting (it came formatted) the drive as it came with the NTFS system. When I prepare to format the drive via disk management, it only gives me the option of an NTFS format and no FAT32.

Aug 19, 2009I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Unable To Save Images To ".JPEG" Format?
Jul 22, 2005I'm using Windows XP and I've just realised that recently all the pictures I've saved have been in Bitmap fromat and usually the default extension it saves to is JPEG. It doesn't even give me the JPEG option now. I have to convert all my images from Bitmap to JPEG via Paint. Coz some pictures are riduculously big on bitmap like 40MB when its 1MB on Jpeg.

Finding Slave Drive Not There
Jan 31, 2006Problem with XP pro finding slave drive, I installed a 200 Gig maxtor drive set up as a slave funny thing it see's the drive in defrag but it does not see it in My Computer or Explorer, I have uninstalled it and installed it 2 or 3 times and when I do it installs the Maxtor slave back and even say's your new hardware is installed and ready to use but you can't see it except in defrag now that is a new one for me.

Or will it still read as a slave drive with no OS files? I was unable to get XP to load with the card so I removed it and after replacing it the drives do not show up. They are in the Bios and the driver for the card is in and working corectly. Last year I replaced the main drive after four years of use with a Western Digital drive. recently on boot up, the system can no longer detect either the primary master or the primary slave drives.
