Whenever I reboot CHKDSK runs weather I have told it to or not.A previous hard drive was failing on this PC. I had Norton Ghost making images on another HD. View 2 RepliesI've recently formatted my HD and run Partition Magic to create 5 partitions but now every time I reboot, CHKDSK runs to check each drive, but doesn't find any problems. My drives and labels are as follows; O.S.(C), DVD Drive(D), DVD/CD-RW(E), Data(F), Games(G), Video(H), Music(I). I'm running twin WD 250 GB HD in a RAID 1 configuration. 30 GB dedicated to (C) and the rest are split to contain between 50 to 60 GB. I've also adjusted the cluster size to 16K. File system is NTFS and os is Win XP Pro. I haven't installed any antivirus or firewall because I'm not connected to the internet yet. Also no progs running on startup. This is a fresh HD with nothing installed except os and drivers. Partitioning was fairly easy and straight-forward so I'm really scratching my head to figure out what is wrong.

(2 of 3) It then says "Correcting error in index $I30 for the file 106330" (twice)And then "sorting index $ I30 in file 106330" Then it just stand like that (waited 3 hrs).There is no sort of "work noise" or lights from the machine, just the fans.. I've tried restarting a few times, but no difference.The only thing I did yesterday that might have had this kind of effect is installing Gimp, but I can't see how.

View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery time I open Windows XP, I get a message saying "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" Then it runs a chkdsk.It reports no errors and opens as usual.Then if I try to defrag the disk that is checked, I get a message saying Diskeeper has detected that CHKDSK is scheduled to run. This is due to a user request or because the Operating System has found errors in the file system.I have run Chkdsk on this drive, but no errors have been found.I have not scheduled Chkdsk to run on this drive.If I then try to reboot, the same procedure occurs again and check disk does not report any errors.

I know this problem can be solved by running chkdsk but I also know from prior experience that it will cause a lot of problems. I'm not having any problems. Windows XP is running very fast and works just fine. I just know from experience that if I allow chdsk to run that it will mess with my OS.At boot it gives me the option of not allowing chkdsk to run, which I don't. When you start it up chkdsk attempts to run and if you hit any key in the allowed time period it does not just skip chkdsk as it has in the past, it continues to reboot again and again. Even if you let the chkdsk utility run it just reboots when its finished and we're back to square one. How do we disable chkdsk or Autochk.exe if that's what is happening and will this solve the problem maybe?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I set CHKDSK to run at next restart, it does NOT display the usual CHKDSK text interface with the runnning progress of the operation. Instead it runs while displaying the Windows Logo screen, not with a running progress bar like ususal though. The logo screen color pallette freezes until CHKDSK is done, then the machine reboots like normal. What happened to my CHKDSK text display? This also happens when I set Diskeeper 7.0 to run at boot time. Instead of the Diskeeper text display, it does the same thing as CHKDSK. Any ideas?

Classes don't start for spring until the end of the week, so I can't have my professors help me, so I'm using fourms to fix my problem. Here it is:I'm currently working on a Dell Inspirion 1501, AMD 64x Dual Core, 1GB RAM, 100 GB HDD, Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP2.The original problem was a registry error message that was coming up at startup, and Internet Explorer 7 would not load the Internet even though everything with the Local Area Connection was fine.These problems were fixed by: Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7, and running TuneUp2008, which has a registry cleaner, which fixed several problems. Everything seemed to work fine after this; up until I attempted to use Spyware Blaster and Ad-Aware. The computer was not allowing them to access the internet.Checked the Windows Firewall, and added the programs to the exceptions list, still nothing.
Then I realized that they had Norton Internet Security 2006 installed, so figuring that it was the Norton firewall blocking those programs I attempted to open Norton. The program would not open, and would freeze. After several unsuccessful attempts to uninstall Norton, (I was recieving some error message aboue being logged into Norton as an Admin user, but since Norton would not open, I could not do this) I found the solution on the internet, a file from Symtematec, I ran it, and it said that it would be completely uninstalled after the next restart, so I restarted.
Since I restarted from uninstalling Norton, Chkdsk runs at every startup. First it runs a 3-stage check, finds no problems, then reboots. At the next reboot, chkdsk will run again, this time with a 5-stage check. After hours and hours of chkdsk just repeatedly running on a loop, I attempted to boot in safe mode, which was unsuccessful. I'm also not able to boot into Last Known Good Config, it just starts the chkdsk again. The only thing I AM able to do, is run the WinXP CD at bootup and run the recovery console, but I'm not sure what I need to be fixing or doing within the Recovery Console.
WIN XP Pro SP3 (+NortonSecurity2009) Two days ago & ongoing: On BootUp CHKDSK NTSF started running automatically on Blue Screen every time I turn on the computer. "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" and proceeds to check C: for 'Files' 'Indexes' and 'Security Descriptors.' (command line 'parameters' are needed for all these) Then Windows boots up normally. When I went to defrag I was not allowed to proceed because of CHKDSK and something about damaged files. Where did this CHKDSK automatic behavior come from & what is it doing? Is my disk corrupted? Will all my files get eaten from the inside out? (BTW-this "DUMMIE" [me] has NO backup) At the Very Same Time - My Norton Anti-Virus became Completely Disabled. An icon appeared on my desktop where I've not had one before - but I cannot access the program from there, from Start-AllPrograms, or even from C:ProgramFiles, open, run. Nothing. The System-Tray Norton icon is gone too! Tried to download a quick, free good antivirus program for right-now protection: AVG and/or Avast - both failed. My behind is hanging in the breeze. (hoping that Windows little Virus Protection & the Firewall will do ok short-term) I've run Malwarebytes, Spy-Bot, & Terminator, but those aren't AntiVirus. HELP! These issues look like maybe 2 separate problems? Maybe not. Has something really bad gotten in? I'm really stuck! Is CHKDSK the priority if there is corruption of the HD, or is AV the priorty? out) and the new hard drive would not boot unless I booted first to a floippy with boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com. Have tried recovery console and everything else I can think of, but the system WILL NOT boot to the hard drive. I checked the boot.ini file for improper boot, but everything looks The old hard drive had two partitions on it, but the hidden partition was corrupt so I deleted it. I changed the boot.ini file settings accordingly.
My computer fan runs and stays on no booting to post and stays on really loud can not figure this out! View 1 Replies View RelatedI been dealing with hp support the whole time I've owned it. The problem was/is is that the case fan runs on high speed much too frequently. When it cranks on It slows down the computer and continues to run for about a minute.Then after about 2 min. it turns on again at high speed. When this happens and your surfing the web or working in a program it slows that process down. The fan cranks on even when not in use, if left on. Anyway, hp changed the cpu fan first, did not fix the problem. Then they changed the motherboard, it did not fix it either. They are now sending me a new power supply and cord. I'll see what happens.
I own 2 of these pc's and the other one does not run like this at all. As I was troubleshooting the first one I unplugged the 2nd pc to move it to another outlet. I then went to turn on the pc and it's totally dead! I tried everything. Switched out the powercord but that was not it. There is a light on the back of the pc that comes on when the pc is plugged in. It's blinking. On the other pc it's solid, not blinking. I talked to hp and they are sending a tech to the house with a new motherboard and power supply.
Every time i try to boot I got problems when i get to the screen where u pick the booting source, it just ignores and runs widows. Can someone help?

Upon power returning i tried to boot up my PC and i recieved the dreaded 'unmountable boot' message. I have fixed this error many times for friends and family using the recovery console on my XP disc and of course I proceeded to do just that. However it didnt work at all. I tryed chkdsk /r - fixed some things, rebooted and still blue screen. I tryed chkdsk /p - didnt fix anything, rebooted and still blue screen. I tried fixboot alone and in following both chkdsk operations ( and yes I tried just the chkdsk and and exiting also) and still blue screen persists upon reboot. I really am at a loss for what to do now. Please any help will be welcomed.

I powered off then on and it would goto the xp loading page then go black again. Tried to restart several times sometime I could get to the login page and once I logged in my desktop would appear but I could not do anything. Tried f8 went to last known good configuration but still same issue. Tried safe mode but you can not do a restore in safe mode. Several times when i was able to get logged in a blue screen would flash but very fast and it would say something about an error and needing to restart.

I can solve it by booting an XP disk and going into recovery mode to copy a new gdi32.dll over the old one, but I was thinking since I am going to be seeing alot of SP3 updates, and a good deal have errored out already, it'd be cool to automate the fix just a little to save some time. Time adds up when you have to let the Windows CD boot up, and then type out the file paths for copying the file, etc.Is there a way to run a batch file from a bootable CD or USB drive? I want to boot up, run the bat, restart. Seems like it'd be a very fast and very easy solution. I just don't know how to do that.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running windows xp pro with all updates on a intel III 1000 processer with 2 250gb hds. my ISP runs an antivirus and I run Norton antivirus and Spy Sweeper. Late yesterday windows did an automatic update and I installed them. This morning I cannot boot on the hd with the updates. I reach the window that displays system info in b/w. At the bottom of this screen are two sets of two symbols a Y followed by an infinity symbol. On this hd I do not reach the point of going to safe mode. I booted on the second drive but it is not up to date (luckily?). I cannot determine how to remove the updates from the first drive. I tried System Recovery, I get a message that it is corrupt and do I want to send a message to Microsoft.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop, Sony Vio, and I am getting this error message "Unmountable Boot Volume". It won't boot in safe mode, or last known good...etc, or anything else. I have the restore cd's, but that prompts me to reformat the hard drive and I don't want to do that and lose everything. Back in '99 when I was in school I had the similar problem with my desktop and everyone said I would have to reformat, but my teacher did a few things and brought back the volume without losing anything but of course that was many moons ago.

I have read tons of stuff and tried loads of stuff and yes you guessed it nothing has sorted it out.
My computer knowledge isnt great so if this requires Bios work or Command prompts i will need some detailed help.

I'm having a problem with my system. I've narrowed down the problem, to one of my storage drives. It has 2 partitions, E & F. I have 3 AT100 IDE HD's(One XP Boot drive, & Two Storage Drives). And a CDRW/DVD Combo Drive. Everything was working fine when they were all mounted on the Primary & Secondary IDE Controller. I tried to defrag one of the partitions of E&F Drive,...and Disk Defrag locked up shortly after it started. I had to End Task,...and eventually it stopped. Thought nothing of it,...and proceded to try and mount that drive on the Via Raid Controller on my mobo. It Can be used as Non-Raid IDE Controller. Then I found that windows xp would only boot if I disabled the Via Controller. When the Via Controller was Enabled,...I would get Stop 0x00000024 Error BSOD. This is the controller that the problematic HD was mounted to.
When I try to boot in Safe Mode,..I get Stop 0x00000050 Error BSOD. So I then booted from XP Home CD, and went into Recovery Console. I did CHKDSK /r/p on all drives. The E&F Drive would get this error; "One or more Unrecoverable Parts found". Or something like that. Is there anything else I can try to get my HD to work without formatting? Just to clarify,...This is NOT the HD with XP installed. It is an extra Storage Drive. And everything was working perfectly fine untill Disk Defrag locked up. And I tried mounting that drive on a different IDE Controller embedded in my mobo.
I know what to do but i am bit curious on the formatting bit. I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I kno you can format the harddrive through the installation process of windows but i was wondering if it is possilbe to just to format the C: during that process or does it only format the whole harddrive
View 2 Replies View RelatedI reformatted my hard drive due to OS issues, I was running a trial version of Server 2003 along with XP Pro, and I had to get rid of Server 2003 because it was conflicting with XP Pro, and so the only way to do that was by reformatting both hard drives including XP Pro because Server 2003 was acting as the dominant OS, so I backed up all my ****, and reinstalled XP Pro, but now I get this hard drive problem that it says only 51 Gigs are remaining on a 250GB Hard drive, when the only thing installed on that hard drive is XP pro and maybe 15 applications, I tried using every program I can think of to find hidden files that equal a huge size but nothing shows up

I got a trojan that attached to my browser. I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. It gives me an error, ESystem Volume Information is not accessable, access is denied.I am trying to find a way to either resize E: to 1GB or smaller and move that 169 GB back to C: or get rid of E: altogether and put all the missing space back on C:

I wanted to format my computer completely anyways, and would like to know how i can format my computer and merge these two partitions. View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded my laptop to windows XP from ME. I first replaced my 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig hard drive. I added another 128 memory module for a total of 256. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.
