Programs Running At Startup To Determine
Jul 6, 2008
I used to use a web site that you could cross reference items that ran at startup to determine if they were required, optional, or otherwise. This site does not seem to be working currently and am looking for some alternative.

Win XP Home edition. I'm in the Speed Up Windows Startup class. I currently have a very long list of startup programs running. Is it safe for me to disable all except security programs (Symantec Norton,AdAware,Spyguard)?Charles

I've got windows XP and want to stop some things running when I boot windows. I've tried running MSCONFIG and un-ticking programs in the startup tab. Next time I boot the same programs still load. When I looked in MSCONFIG again the programs were un-ticked, but if I scroll down they have all appeared again ticked. Can anyone help me cause I've got some pretty pointless things starting that slow my PC down?

Our family computer is running like a slug. It takes forever to startup and open programs and the hard drive activity light is always on. It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!

Someone told me that my computer is running slow because I have too many programs running in the background. Could this be true and if so, how do I delete the unnecessary programs and more to the point, how do I recognize which programs are necessary and which are not?

I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.

Played the game with no problems until recently. The computer's OS was a mess, so I destroyed the C: partition, reinstalled Win XP and updated it to SP-3, reloaded all the programs and restored her backed-up working files. The computer now runs like a screamin' mini, with no OS problems -- save one. Can't even run setup.exe to install it. After ending that attempt and removing the CD, Task Manager still shows setup.exe and wowexec.exe running. When I 'end task', I get "The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. Win 16 bit subsystems may be unstable." tried to lead my friend through the Program Compatibility Wizard, but it still does not run.

Does Win XP support running Win 95 programs? If no, we are done. If yes, is there anything special that needs to be done?I am trying to run some old Win 95 games on XP while. The disks are in good shape and they get recognized but the programs don't appear to load. The programs stop at the beginning of the install process.

My problem is when I start up the computer, I have too many running programs. When I log on and all I want to do is load my desk top and click on AOL, I have all these programs I need to click thru til I can actually get to the process of getting on the internet. I thought I could go to start menu - control panel - start menu and select what I wanted to start running when I logged on to the computer, I don't see anything there that will allow me to not have spybot, spysweeper, aim, yahoo start running when I log on. I know I researched this before but cannot for the life of me remember how to start up my computer and stop all these processes from running and holding me up

My computer sometimes fails to hibernate. Will seem to go through the process, switch off mouse, keyboard and monitor, then switch them on again and resume running as if nothing had happened. No consistent programs that are running at the time, no matter if had been/am connected t the internet. Nothing appears in event manager, no error messages of any kind. No relatiin to length of time the computer has been running.

My computer has been running very slowly lately. I have 67 free gigs of space, so I wouldn't think that's the problem. It's slow in the following ways:programs seem to lag pretty badly when I have more than one open. Sometimes even when I only have one open. Could this be due to my computer's amount of RAM

My laptop has just decided to run very slowly of late.So much so that I am unable to run certain programs. Some will load up but if you try and navigate through any screens etc the program will stop working (comes up with not responding in windows task manager). This is even happening with windows explorer.I've got Norton 360, which although it should automatically boot up at start up is failing to do so.I can't even get it to run to perfom a system scan. This leads me to think I may have a nasty virus or worse still failing hardware

This gosz on about four times, freezing at different points, and can even be

Frequently on shut down I see a message that says hpqimzone.exe is not responding and I have to click on "End Now" to continue with shutown. I did some researching and found out that this process belongs to HP Photosmart Premier. This seemed confusing to me at first because the shutdown isssue occurs even when I don't run the program. After some more examinations I found out that I have two items that seem to run on startup, one is called Adobe Reader Speed Launch and the other is HP Photosmart Premier Fast Start. They are in a Startup folder - file path: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart Menu Programs Startup. Are these critical components of startup and, if not, how do I stop them from running at startup? Would deleting the shortcuts do the trick?

My 2005 hp pavillion is very slow. Slow to startup and slow internet connections.
I ran msinfo32 and looked at the Startup Program list in the Software Environment. There are too many things to list in this post (must be a couple of hundred items listed). Not sure how to determine if these items can be deleted or not. The list is too long to show here. Any suggestions? Thanks...
Here is a partial list .......

After starting my computer some programs won't start within the first two-three minutes after XP has finished loading. Winamp (5.5) shows the main window frame but doesn't load any further, Ad-Watch 2007 doesn't load while Ad-Watch SE loads fine, MSN Messenger doesn't load at all and IE7 starts but refuses to load any web pages. Firefox and Word 2007 are not affected. All of these annoyances disappear entirely after about three minutes after which all programs work just fine. In the three minute time frame I am also unable to access My Computer which just shows the flashlight looking for drives. I am, however, able to access files by using shortcuts to eg My Documents.

This is a tough one to explain. This is a couple week old PC. When booting, sometimes it hangs on the black screen with the progress bar either in Starting Windows or Resuming Windows. Sometimes it hangs on the Windows desktop and the cursor is froze. I can power down and boot up again and it usually boots normally then. The other strange thing is that the programs that load at startup don't seem to be consistent. Sometimes the McAfee Security Center will be in the system tray, sometimes not. Sometimes other programs normally found in the system tray are not there. I ran AdAware and Spybot and got rid of everything those 2 found. Virus Scan runs clean.Another example is that I have my LAN connection set to show the icon in the system tray - it doesn't but I can still connect. The icons aren't hidden, checked that. I have also consistently lost my wireless connection. The Device Manager doesn't even show it. It's built into the motherboard I believe.

I started up my computer just now and everything seemed fine until I tried to start an application. Some did not appear, though they appeared running in the task manager. The ones that did start up would load for a moment and freeze (I tried Trillian, which didn't start up, but appeared in the task manager, and Skype and Firefox, both of which froze).I'm not sure if this had anything to do with it at all, but as I was frustrated with nothing working I opened CCleaner and analyzed, and while it was doing that applications suddenly started working. My question is, what could have caused that? Is it something I need to worry about, such as a piece of my hardware slowly dieing?

I have a XP system that I thought I had fixed (random rebooting) this is pasted from my last post....
Now the machine.... Antec case with true 380s power supply, ABIT AV8 board,2 sticks of pc3200 512 mb ddr400 ram , Amd Athlon64 3500+ (not oc) ,Nvidia geoforcefx 5900xt card running XP Pro with SP1 installed.
What I have tried ...ran antivirus , ran spywarecleaner, defrag, ran memtest, adjusted to failsafe defaults in bios , flashed the bios, tried diff combinations of slots for memory, upgrade driver , upgraded via 4-1 drivers
A couple days ago figured it must be power supply (brand new one too) so I started unplugging devices ..second cd rom and fan pulled and everything has been running great since.Question before I drop $60 on power supply what should I look for , where is a good supplier and most important do you think this will solve the problem.
