I'm trying to eliminate some programs from running on startup and for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it in XP.I could do it fine in '98, but obviously they've changed it.

I ran msinfo32 and looked at the Startup Program list in the Software Environment. There are too many things to list in this post (must be a couple of hundred items listed). Not sure how to determine if these items can be deleted or not. The list is too long to show here. Any suggestions? Thanks...

when i start my computer, it takes forever to load, and theres always SO many programs running, some that i have no idea what they are on the task manager, and also ones that just come on that i dont even use, how do i make them not run at start up?
View 11 Replies View RelatedAfter starting my computer some programs won't start within the first two-three minutes after XP has finished loading. Winamp (5.5) shows the main window frame but doesn't load any further, Ad-Watch 2007 doesn't load while Ad-Watch SE loads fine, MSN Messenger doesn't load at all and IE7 starts but refuses to load any web pages. Firefox and Word 2007 are not affected. All of these annoyances disappear entirely after about three minutes after which all programs work just fine. In the three minute time frame I am also unable to access My Computer which just shows the flashlight looking for drives. I am, however, able to access files by using shortcuts to eg My Documents.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is a tough one to explain. This is a couple week old PC. When booting, sometimes it hangs on the black screen with the progress bar either in Starting Windows or Resuming Windows. Sometimes it hangs on the Windows desktop and the cursor is froze. I can power down and boot up again and it usually boots normally then.The other strange thing is that the programs that load at startup don't seem to be consistent. Sometimes the McAfee Security Center will be in the system tray, sometimes not. Sometimes other programs normally found in the system tray are not there. I ran AdAware and Spybot and got rid of everything those 2 found. Virus Scan runs clean.Another example is that I have my LAN connection set to show the icon in the system tray - it doesn't but I can still connect. The icons aren't hidden, checked that. I have also consistently lost my wireless connection. The Device Manager doesn't even show it. It's built into the motherboard I believe.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI started up my computer just now and everything seemed fine until I tried to start an application. Some did not appear, though they appeared running in the task manager. The ones that did start up would load for a moment and freeze (I tried Trillian, which didn't start up, but appeared in the task manager, and Skype and Firefox, both of which froze).I'm not sure if this had anything to do with it at all, but as I was frustrated with nothing working I opened CCleaner and analyzed, and while it was doing that applications suddenly started working.My question is, what could have caused that? Is it something I need to worry about, such as a piece of my hardware slowly dieing?

When I ago to task manager I see many many programs that I don't know what they are doing. I used MSconfig to remove a lot of them and that only results in many program reinstallations. View 3 Replies View Relatedi am running winxp service pack 2. having big problems with the computer at startup, it automatically launches programs lots of times eg 120 versions of iexplorer, hovering over my documents opens all documents at once, the computer is generally unstable until i have manually deleted all the programs running one by one, it starts to settle down and run ok. i have done all the usual virus,spyware, trojan scans etc - all clean. I'm worried that it could be more serious than a virus or malware.

Next time I boot the same programs still load. When I looked in MSCONFIG again the programs were un-ticked, but if I scroll down they have all appeared again ticked. Can anyone help me cause I've got some pretty pointless things starting that slow my PC down?

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhenever I startup, the computer usage runs way up to 80-100% and it takes forever to start a program. It immidiately starts this whenever I just turn the computer on, and I hear it because the sound that Windows makes at startup gets scratchy and stutters. Once it has started up, if I click on iTunes (for example), once the program pops up and I click on Play, every song stutters. It stutters only at the beginning and then it smooths out, but it does it for every single song played.

View 4 Replies View Relatedfew programs began showing up in the System Tray that I didn't want to open.I went to msconfig/General and checked Selective Startup without knowing whether or not I needed to.Then, I went to Startup and deselected those programs.That worked for a while till I went back to misconfig and checked for Normal Startup Since the unwanted programs appeared again in my System Tray, I unchecked them in Normal Startup mode. But when I boot up my computer, I find that I am still in Selective Startup even though I checked for Normal.

It was "ucmore search" or something like that... I was getting a new firefox window with ads on it every single minute. When it got me tired, I installed Ad-aware and run it. Automatically quarantine everything it spotted.Even then, the problem was still there. I didn't care, since I really had to get with other things.I tried to install some software trial But it didn't let me install it, it popped up a message saying I was missing js32.dll.I rebooted my lap, and now every time I log in to windows, all that appears is my wallpaper. View 8 Replies View RelatedI was given this info quite a while back by someone, somewhere, I think a forum moderator for another computer and OS, but I'm an old person who can't remember squat and can't find it in previous posts either. My current operating system is Windows XP Pro SP3. The previous instructions given to me were for Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I don't know if there would be any difference in the ability to modify the registry or not, but I'll probably soon find out.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI installed a beta of Vista just to try it out. I used Partition Magic to create a second partition to run it on. I installed it with no problems and was able to boot between Vista and XP when I needed to switch. When I was done with Vista, I didn't uninstall using Vista's uninstaller. Instead I used Partition Magic to reformat the partition. I've installed Ubuntu on the partition that Vista was on and I like that pretty well. Problem is, when I try to boot into XP, it still thinks that Vista is installed on there and goes through Vista's dual boot prog. When I select XP it loads normally until it gets to the part where it should run autochk. It crashes saying it can't find it (it must be looking for Vista's copy since XP still has its) and I can't do anything except turn the machine off. Point of the story: How do I modify the boot loader on my XP drive? I can still access the infor mation from Ubuntu so if I have to edit something I can.

It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!
