Modify Registry For Uninterrupted Booting?
Sep 15, 2008
I was given this info quite a while back by someone, somewhere, I think a forum moderator for another computer and OS, but I'm an old person who can't remember squat and can't find it in previous posts either. My current operating system is Windows XP Pro SP3. The previous instructions given to me were for Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I don't know if there would be any difference in the ability to modify the registry or not, but I'll probably soon find out.

I'm having problems with XP. The bootup always takes around 5-10 minutes. I've virus scanned and defragged a number of times. My cousin cleaned my registry. The system runs slow when I have AIM and iTunes running. Whenever I minimize a window, the music will play extremely slow...like it burps or something. The CPU usage is always high and I don't know what's eating up the memory. Is reformatting the only answer?

I installed a beta of Vista just to try it out. I used Partition Magic to create a second partition to run it on. I installed it with no problems and was able to boot between Vista and XP when I needed to switch. When I was done with Vista, I didn't uninstall using Vista's uninstaller. Instead I used Partition Magic to reformat the partition. I've installed Ubuntu on the partition that Vista was on and I like that pretty well. Problem is, when I try to boot into XP, it still thinks that Vista is installed on there and goes through Vista's dual boot prog. When I select XP it loads normally until it gets to the part where it should run autochk. It crashes saying it can't find it (it must be looking for Vista's copy since XP still has its) and I can't do anything except turn the machine off. Point of the story: How do I modify the boot loader on my XP drive? I can still access the infor mation from Ubuntu so if I have to edit something I can.

Microsoft Windows XP uses a lot of folders for each user. Everything from "My video" to your personal documents folder. Below is where you can view the locations of these folders and can change them. Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on how to get started. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders Right click on the folders and select Modify Change the path to a new path if you want to change the path. Traffic flow can be managed very well in Windows XP using the Quality of Service (QoS)Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP).However, programs must be designed to take advantage of this QoS API.The traffic from programs that are not QoS-aware are sent directly to a different API called TCI.These programs have to fight for bandwidth because unlike the QoS API, there is no bandwidth reservation. If you use a lot of QoS-aware programs and would like to change the percent of the bandwidth that is reserved for the program, read below.Make sure your logged on as Administrator.Do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.

The improvement which I'd like to suggest is to change the behaviour of the recently used programs part of the Start Menu so that it doesn't include any programs which are already pinned. I have several programs pinned because I use them so often - Word, Excel, Outlook Express etc - so it's pointless and irritating to have them appear twice on the menu because they are on the recent programs list under the pinned list too. This is even more irritating when, as occasionally happens, it is a program which has a unique initial
letter which I use to quickly start the program. For example on my Start Menu, Notepad is the only pinned item starting with N, and so I can press "Start, N" to run it. Unfortunately sometimes Notepad ends up in the recently used list, and then because there are two programs beginning with N, my shortcut no longer works.
One point worth noting perhaps, seeing as I've just tried this and it didn't seem to happen ... it only happens at bootup, if you do anything to modify the Start Menu - such as pinning a different item - then all duplicates get removed. And they won't reappear if you use the program again. However as soon as you do a restart, they reappear in the menu, and stay until they are forcibly removed, such as by pinning something else.

When I start up Windows XP I get a message from Zone Alarm which reads:Suspicious Behavior Windows Genuine Advantage is trying to read and modify physical memory ( programme WgaTray.exe)Zone Alarm gives me the option to allow or deny - thus far I have opted for deny. Please could anyone tell me what Windows Genuine Advantage is; I suspect any advantage would be to Microsoft rather than to me.

I tried to delete the registry entries which were bad, I had 30 of them, but the these two will just not go away, even by doing them manually, such as saving as a backup then deleting it manually and remerging. They just show up no matter what I do, or so use programs like Registry Mechanic, which I found only mediocre, very far from the ratings. to delete these two entries somehow from someone who is actully knows how to without using several so called registry cleaners, which only work partially.

I have a Toshiba laptop and when I restart or turn it on, it hangs on the Toshiba screen. I then have to manually hold down the power button to turn it off, then press it again to turn on. This last time, it took about 12 times of doing this just to get windows to run. This started a few days ago when I suddenly got the BSOD, I think because of a driver. However, I haven't installed any drivers in a long time...the blue screen just popped up out of nowhere and now it seems my computer is messed up.

so I was on the net and the computer just frozed up. So I turned it off and then turned it back on and it would only start up under Safe Mode Networking option. Just regular Safe Mode, Start Windows Normally, and Start When Last Known Settings Work do not work. Safe Mode just freezes up, and the other 2 will go to the windows loading screen and a blue page will come up.

So I have this Asus netbook with Win7 RC (ultimate) and its been fine. But the time has come. I bought an upgrade edition of W7Home back in the day from Amazon for $50. So I connected a usb DVD drive to the unit, popped an XP disk in and set the BIOS to boot from that drive. It loads all the files but when it gets to the setup screen, 3 choices, Enter to install XP (pro), F3 to exit and R to repair. None of these choices work, Its just frozen, I have an AC brick plugged in so thats not it. I tried 3 times with the same results.
Then I got a Vista Home disk and tried it and it worked just like it was supposed to. After that, from within Vista, I popped in the Win7 Home Disk and proceeded to install Win7. Perfect. I'm wondering why the xp failed at that point. in the W7 box it gave instructions to upgrade from XP which was basically, back everything up, then boot from the DVD.
