How To Often Should Defrag And Clean Registry

The Display adapter is a 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with TV Out, and I am using Internet Explorer 7. Am I doing anything that is incorrect and should not do, or do differently in the following?I am using Diskeeper 2008 Home, and Defragment my Hard Drive every two hours. I clean my Registry with Advanced Registry Optimizer 2008 about every five days. I perform a Full Registry Backup right before I execute a Diskeeper Boot-time Defragmentation [which I perform about every three days. I delete all my Partial and Full Registry Backups when I have three or more Full Registry Backups. I then Perform a Full Registry Backup [so I never have more than three Full Registry Backups at any time, to save Disk Space.] I know that the Registry is Vital for the entire computer,

I want to use a Defrag programe in order to clean up my computer (truse me, I really need to clean it up...). Now I have a programe called "UltimateDefrag", and I'm running a defrag using this programe as we speak. Also, since I'm not sure about this programe, I've taken a look in the programe manual, and I could bearly understand enough to run a defarg using this programe.

On my Sony laptop, I can use Foxfire as my browser and all is OK, but when I try to use IE or windows tools like Clean Disk or Defrag, these processes use 100% CPU and hang up. I use AVG for virus protection and ran it in Safe mode - didn't help. I also bought and installed Uniblue Registry Cleaner - that didn't help either. System Restore isn't a solution either.

I have been having the slow downs hard core. Defrag has been going for 24+ hours and its only at 9%. Folders take 5 seconds to load and the icon pictures within the folders take about 10 seconds to appear. Games run fine and programs do to once they load, but its almost like the computer has a 5 second hicup every 10 seconds and freezes. I have ran registry fixer, spy bot, avg, I have ran tests on all my components with a program called cpu tester (r something like that). I was grabbing wi-fi spots within my neiborhood to get internet with a wireless usb adapter. Funny thing is this is when all the problems starting happening or at least getting worse after a couple weeks of installing the Belkin software for the usb adapter. For the past week I can't get a signal I usually could always get. I guess my question is should I just wipe the drives and start fresh? or should I try something else?

When I did a clean install of XP, I saved the backed up the registry.
Can I import this backup to clean out all registry entries since the
install?
Or can I do a comparison between the backup and the current registry to look
at differences and delete them manually?

On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download. Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?

I am selling with the OS installed (Win XP-Pro), what can I do to ensure that there will be no information at all left on the machine. I used it for MSN, Internet banking, browsing all that stuff, and I'm a little nervous that there will be information accesable by the buyer. I would just do a wipe and reinstall, however, I do not have the OS disc anymore, So I want to clean it up as much as possible. People tell me that I have to get the registry cleaned out. What I am asking is for any tips to ensure a clean machine and registry.

I have downloaded 4 different registry programs and they all give me a different number of problems with my computer. One (Windows Registry Repair Pro) gave me 264 problems, with 255 invalid paths being part of the problem. This one sells for $9.99, is it a good one? I guess there aren't any free registry cleaners available? Which registry program does CNET suggest to be a good one? I have Win XP SP2 Home edition My computer has slowed down and it is probably from the registry right?

The Microsoft Windows registry is a hierarchical database of system configuration data. Many of the programs written for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit platforms require data from the registry. This means it is used often, and some programs really like to hammer the registry. Running a program such as SysInternal's RegMon, which logs access to the registry, can show you just how much some programs make use of the registry. Even Explorer, the file browser built into Windows, makes heavy use and this can have wide impact on performance

i downloaded "Demo Version" Jv16 Power tools 2005 from a link to find duplicate files and clean my registry, I thought that programs I had uninstalled and reinstalled for varius reasons were all duplicated with missing files. The download didn't have the handbook which i found out later i needed so now after running dup. file finder, reg cleaner. I have a very unstable system nothing stays stable and there is a mass of backups I don,t know where to start. The forum there won,t help. supposedly I got a old Beta version. My backups don,t look anything like there's. I would like to go back to before i installed with system restore point but i dont know if it can retrieve files from Jv16 backup or what.

Win xp pro, pen 4, norton antivirus, Win firewall. After I downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger the defrag process wouldn't defrag all the files. I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.

My general understanding is that it isnt necessary to defrag very often. An occasional defrag should do the trick. Unless, maybe, youve done a lot of stuff recently. I do have several questions though that I hope someone can clear up for me and anyone else that might be interested.
1. Does a pre windows defrag program help any at all? If so, how often should it be run?
2. Is this different than the pre installed Microsoft chkdsk program? Isnt it also a pre windows defrag program?
3. Is one or the other better? Or are they basically the same?
4. What happens if, on occasion, you use a pre windows defrag program and the chkdsk program? Is there a conflict?
5. Does one try to write a certain way and the other rewrites a different way and therefore your wasting your time and effort?
6. Does a pre windows defrag program make a windows defrag program unnecessary?
7. Since it has been stated that the windows defrag program works fine, but isnt the greatest, what if you use a different combination, like, JkDefrag and a pre windows program? I mention JkDefrag because, if you wanted, it can be set to defrag daily or weekly. Set and forget.
8. Assuming one is doing a lot of stuff, when does a registry defrag program enter the picture? Or is one ever needed? Is this just a marketing thing?
9. And, of course, there are also registry cleaners. Again, assuming your doing lots of stuff.
10. And also theres also programs like CCleaner program, which cleans out cookies, temp files, etc.
11. Is there an order that one might want to run these programs? Even if it is only monthly or even less often?
So, my inquiry, isnt which program is better, as I would assume there would be a lot of opinions about that. But rather, what combo might one want to have on hand, or run, on those occasions that you feel the need to defrag. Again, if we look at the CCleaner program, in basically one step, it does a pretty good job of cleaning out all sorts of stuff. If you wanted, it can even be set to clean automatically. Set and forget. If one were to do the same steps, manually, it would take much longer, and maybe, still not be as effective as the CCleaner program. I have Zone Alarm firewall. Basically its set and, for the most part, forgotten about. I have the AVG anti virus program, set to do auto scans on a daily basis. Set and forget.

When I use XP's utility to analyze my disk fragmentation, it says "You should defragment this volume", but the defrag process hangs when it is about 1% done. Defragging when booted into Safe Mode doesn't solve the problem. I searched around, and it seems like this might have to do with my FAT32 disk partitions (see my specs). What do you guys think? What would be the next steps?

When I defrag my system, it appears to be defragmenting, but when it finishes, there are still loads of 'red' fragmented files, hardly anything has changed from before it started. This has been happening now for quite a while.

I am having a problem getting Defrag to run on my C drive. I've tried it several times and it runs to completion but then when I check it again it is still very fragmented and says that I should defrag it. It reports that my drive is about 35% fragmented. I tried booting in Safe mode, thought that might do the trick but got same results, which means it did nothing. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

I downloaded Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier for a free 30 day trial, decided I didn't want it, uninstalled it and now my XP Pro Defrag has ceased to work any longer.
I get some weird message that it can't initialize and that I must have downloaded a different version .
guess the two were fighting each other.
Point is, can I download MS Defrag as a stand alone (Googled but no luck) or do I have to reinstall XP all over again...
Also, is MS Defrag good enough are does Diskeeper do a better job for the averge home user?
