I have downloaded 4 different registry programs and they all give me a different number of problems with my computer. One (Windows Registry Repair Pro) gave me 264 problems, with 255 invalid paths being part of the problem. This one sells for $9.99, is it a good one? I guess there aren't any free registry cleaners available? Which registry program does CNET suggest to be a good one? I have Win XP SP2 Home edition My computer has slowed down and it is probably from the registry right?

I am running XP Pro 64 bit on a custom system(spec in profile.) For the last couple days I've been getting program errors saying that the program has encountered an error and needs to shut down. It started with Call of Duty 4, then Firefox, then AIM and my HP Printer software. Then the computer crashed, and kept rebooting at the Windows loading screen. I eventually got it to load Windows by running Last Good Config. When I got to the login screen it told me the registry hive at ntuser.dat file was corrupted, and then when I logged in Windows said it said Windows had recovered from a serious error. I checked my drive properties and it was terribly fragmented, so I ran defrag, then uninstalled some junk and ran CCleaner and a Registry defrag program and then defrag'd again. The computer worked fine for awhile but it crashed again and the program errors are still occuring sporadically. I think the Software registry hive is corrupted.

It started when I went to open a program that I've used reliably for years -- it started hanging, became unresponsive, and started sucking up all of my virtual memory. I uninstalled and reinstalled a clean copy, and the same thing happened when I tried to load it.I've since completely uninstalled the program, deleted all of its remaining files from my system, removed all of its registry entries.
I now have one folder that I cannot access, for no apparent reason. It's just a folder where I've got quite a bit of video stored (77 clips equalling roughly 13GB). Attempting to open it now results in explorer.exe sucking up all of my system resources until it (explorer.exe) crashes and restarts. (CTRL+ALT+DEL shows Memory Use and VM Size skyrocketing to 700,000+)

When I did a clean install of XP, I saved the backed up the registry.
Can I import this backup to clean out all registry entries since the
install?
Or can I do a comparison between the backup and the current registry to look
at differences and delete them manually?

I have 18.4 GB on the C drive.About a year ago, I needed more space so Iuninstalled programs that I hadn't used for awhile, and it cleared enough several gigs of space for me to do stuff again.Afew months later, although i hadn't added any programs, I was out of space again. This time, I got rid of even programs I did use. I cleared a few gigs again, but a month later, it was gone again. I moved all my picture and text files onto external drives.

Since installing Office 2007 (over Office 2000) recently, I often encounter delays in opening Office 2000 Word files. Furthermore, I am sometimes unable to open them unless I move them to a 'trusted' directory. So I defined a trusted directory, moved the file(s) there, and can work. But when I just now tried to open an Office 2000 Word file, I received a different error message, namely ' You are attempting to open a file type that is blocked by your registry policy setting.', with instructions to disable the restriction via regedit. When I looked at the registry data, there was no 'Office' tab whatsoever under the Microsoft tab beneath Policies. So I'm unable to edit the registry to 'unblock' access to such legacy files.

this problem has been pissing me off so much. I recently got my new laptop. Straight out of the box, the cpu usage when idle was at around 3%, then i uninstalled all the dell junk programs. Somewhere down the line, the cpu idle shot to 35%. The programs that are causing this are csrss.exe and spoolsv.exe, each taking up about 17 cpu each. When i end spoolsv.exe, I notice that my csrss.exe cpu usage will increase. I reinstalled my windows OS and it seemed fine until the next day, these two processes started acting up again. I don't know what else to do, and i'm sure these processes aren't viruses.

On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download. Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?

I got hijacked the other night and ran a program to remove the bad programs. They have all been removed from the system according to the program but I am still having trouble opening files and folders including My Computer and Control Panel. I think this may be because, I've heard, hijacking software alters certain things on the computer so that you can't simply access the control panel and undo all of the trouble it has caused. The error message that I recieve every time I try to open files, folders, etc. reads:
"explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed. You will have to restart the program. An error log is being created." The computer will occassionally freeze up after I click ok.

I feel so dumb, It's been forever since I created a desktop shortcut, and I wanted to create a shortcut for my Canon Utilities file - from my Program bar on the Start Menu. Long story short - I accidentally moved the file to my desktop and cannot get it back to the program list on the Start menu.

I removed a program via the add/remove programs and it seemed as though everything was removed... no traces of it on the desktop or via the start up menu. However, browsing through, (is it still windows explorer?), I saw that the folder is still there and full of goodies. Can I just delete the entire main folder? I get nervous in and around there since something is always sharing something from somewhere else.

I am selling with the OS installed (Win XP-Pro), what can I do to ensure that there will be no information at all left on the machine. I used it for MSN, Internet banking, browsing all that stuff, and I'm a little nervous that there will be information accesable by the buyer. I would just do a wipe and reinstall, however, I do not have the OS disc anymore, So I want to clean it up as much as possible. People tell me that I have to get the registry cleaned out. What I am asking is for any tips to ensure a clean machine and registry.

The Display adapter is a 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with TV Out, and I am using Internet Explorer 7. Am I doing anything that is incorrect and should not do, or do differently in the following?I am using Diskeeper 2008 Home, and Defragment my Hard Drive every two hours. I clean my Registry with Advanced Registry Optimizer 2008 about every five days. I perform a Full Registry Backup right before I execute a Diskeeper Boot-time Defragmentation [which I perform about every three days. I delete all my Partial and Full Registry Backups when I have three or more Full Registry Backups. I then Perform a Full Registry Backup [so I never have more than three Full Registry Backups at any time, to save Disk Space.] I know that the Registry is Vital for the entire computer,

The Microsoft Windows registry is a hierarchical database of system configuration data. Many of the programs written for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit platforms require data from the registry. This means it is used often, and some programs really like to hammer the registry. Running a program such as SysInternal's RegMon, which logs access to the registry, can show you just how much some programs make use of the registry. Even Explorer, the file browser built into Windows, makes heavy use and this can have wide impact on performance

The download didn't have the handbook which i found out later i needed so now after running dup. file finder, reg cleaner. I have a very unstable system nothing stays stable and there is a mass of backups I don,t know where to start. The forum there won,t help. supposedly I got a old Beta version. My backups don,t look anything like there's. I would like to go back to before i installed with system restore point but i dont know if it can retrieve files from Jv16 backup or what.

Does anyone know how to properly configure a multi-hard drive Windows XP Home PC with XP OS files on the boot hard drive (30 GB in my case) and all other program & data files on two separate partitions of a 160 GB drive, so that whenever my system starts slowing down, I can wipe the Windows OS drive clean & do a clean install of XP on it, without having to reinstall some 50+ and growing applications I have downloaded but don't have on CD or DVD?Someone I met in passing but didn't get the details from said this was how he had his PC set up, and that all you have to do is make a backup of your Registry files on the non-OS HD and just restore/reinstall the registry on the OS HD after clean installing XP on the OS HD. Microsoft tech support personnel I have asked about this say this is not something they support and they deny this is possible.
But, as I have run semi-weekly virus & malware scans using multiple products and deleted all of the suspicious files they find and am still experiencing increasingly slow and erratic system performance, MS told me I should do a clean install, after burning all of my downloaded program files to DVD and backing up all my data files (already being performed nightly to the 160 GB drive data files partition), then reinstall all drivers and programs off CDs & DVDs. I estimate this will take a good 8-10 hours every time I want to reinstall XP, which I consider an excessive drag on my productivity in my real business. Does anyone know whether the concept I outlined above is feasible, and if so, where can one find a succinct guide on how to implement it, including a clear map of what directories other than C:Windows any OS files are in, and recommendations for a good registry editor program?
