I feel so dumb, It's been forever since I created a desktop shortcut, and I wanted to create a shortcut for my Canon Utilities file - from my Program bar on the Start Menu. Long story short - I accidentally moved the file to my desktop and cannot get it back to the program list on the Start menu.

2005 MCE WIN XP, if i go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, and scan thru my programs, the amount of time to scroll thru programs is about 3-4 seconds, before it closes out, also RENAMING a folder, on desktop, same thing happens, for instance, renaming a folder PICTURES, i get to PIC, then it kicks me out. I have OPtical wireless mouse, replaced batteries with fully charged ones, no difference, also mouse 12 inches from reciever.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEach time my system starts, or if I log off and back on again, I receive an Error Message that says--A newer version of this program has run on this PC--and then it asks if I want to close the older version. I have tried in vein to locate the problem but have had no luck. There is no obvious identifier for ther message (other than a the fact that the message appears in a Windows type box and has a small white circle with a question mark in it. I would appreciate any hints on locating the offending program so that I can eliminate the older version. Am running a P4 2.4 gig, 1gig RAM with Windows XP pro SP2 installed.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have something called "CTFMON.EXE" loading pertaining to Office XP. Its in my system32 sub directory. I don't have Office XP, I have Office 2000. It looks like it has to do with speech recognition, and text. Of course I removed it, but it came back. I read up on it, and it said it would come back. Do I need this? I never had this before, did I get it with the latest updates from Microsoft 2000? I've taken the check mark out, plus I have completely removed it from my start up, but it still comes back.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI set up a domain on my server and set up about 6 computers in the network. One of the computers is getting decomissioned and I need to strip it down. I removed the domain name to it and now I have not been able log back into the computer, even as the administrator and the guest is locked out (not that I can do much with the guest log-in). Is there any way that I can get back into the computer.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI suspect I have an infection on my PC (win2000) but none of my tools are finding anything. TO recap, I did have the msblast/sasser virus but removed it a while back. Since then, I've had the infamous lsass.exe shutdown. Luckily, I have zone alarm firewall so the shutdown only occurs if I disconnect the firewall.I want to fix this once and for all so I downloaded W2k Service Pack 4 and the 'RPC' MS fix (Kb823980-x8-enu.exe). I thought that would fix the problem but no.I've also run other tools like stinger, vcleaner, spybot, adware, antivirus software. I keep the versions/dat files updated.At this point I'm not sure where to start so I'm posting the log results from hijack this. One thing I noticed is that svchost.exe process occurs 3 times. I seem to recall seeing cmd.exe pop up for a second and a 3rd occurence of svchost.exe followed right after.

A website told me to run a search for programs with "backweb" in them and unistall/delete them. I deleted one program (application?) from the C:/ drive and now my computer is frozen. The mouse moves; however, I am unable to open anything including the recycle bin so that I can put the program back on the computer. I have tried to restart and it still happens.

They have all been removed from the system according to the program but I am still having trouble opening files and folders including My Computer and Control Panel. I think this may be because, I've heard, hijacking software alters certain things on the computer so that you can't simply access the control panel and undo all of the trouble it has caused. The error message that I recieve every time I try to open files, folders, etc. reads:
"explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed. You will have to restart the program. An error log is being created." The computer will occassionally freeze up after I click ok.
Running XP Pro,And wondering how do I clean my registry of ALL the old uninstalled removed programs folders that were long, long ago removed but still remaining in software areas of the various HKeys?

However, browsing through, (is it still windows explorer?), I saw that the folder is still there and full of goodies. Can I just delete the entire main folder? I get nervous in and around there since something is always sharing something from somewhere else.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to fix a friend's computer. When starting up, I get the following error message:Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
but I got an error that c:windowssystem32configsystem could not be copied because it could not be found. The computer has Windows XP SP2.
I have tried the recovery console. I get into it and it asks to answer which windows installation I want to repair. It shows 1: cwindows , so I enter in 1 and press enter. ( I also have just entered 1 without the enter) my computer does nothing....just sits there. It never gets to the next step of asking for the administrators password. I then tried multiple times to go into the "reinstall XP function" and then after it says "looking for versions of window on yout computer" it just sits there.....hard drive light flashing occasionally, but nothing but blue screen.
Is there anyway for me to copy the system files i need if I have the non bootable XP drive daisychained to a drive that does boot? I apparantly can not re-install xp to this HD and can not get the recovery/repair option to work. No safe mode, no nothing. I am thinking there has got to be a way of copying the files I need from the xp cdrom while having the non bootable drive connected to the one working/bootable drive I am able to use. ( I was able to upload XP to a seporate HD I had lying around, however I really want to fix the 80 gig hd that will not boot now.I also want to get my favorites from my "error HD" but when I go into the files for MOZILLA under my name it gives me the error "not authorized" since my HD had me as administrator.
i bought a new pc bought 2 months ago and i hope this isnt a serious problem but when i goto my documents or mainly newhere on my computer and start file browsing if i click on what i think seems to always be a media file of any sort it comes up with ann error message saying windows has encountered a problem bla bla bla plz could someone help me with this as i think this is also begining to effect when i try to convert avi files todvd in winavi but i dont know i just hope someone can help me with the error messages mainly

It's saying the registry cannot load the hive (file): /SystemRootSystem32ConfigSECURITY or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. I have a Toshiba USB flash drive. I have a problem when I using it on a win2000 sysem. It keeps poping up a warnning message saying I removed the drive. And then "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)". But it is just a standard drive so that does not make sense. Other USB drives have the same issue. I can sometimes get them to work for a bit before this happens. It is almost like I removed it. It also will just do this at random. It is working pops up the warning, then not, wait a few minutes and it is working and conencted again. I tried another ports and same issue. Other USB devices work fine though.

View 20 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my PC the only thing that appears is the wallpaper and the mouse arrow which does move but no right click. I've tried SafeMode and get only the words Safe Mode in four corners so I can't do a system restore. I've tried restoring to last known good configuration but I get the wallpaper again.The only thing I can think of doing is a full restoration but I have 300 itunes on my hardrive which are paid for.
If anyone has an idea how to get my programs & icons back, I'll try anything.
I have Xp and i just installed a bunch of new programs and when i go into the start all programs menu there all highlighted in that orange tint and even after clicking the shortcuts they still stay like that is there a way how to get rid of it
View 2 Replies View RelatedI finally broke down and went from W2K Pro to XP Pro on my new build. Almost all my apps have installed just fine but two that I need will not. They are NetObjects Fusion 7 and Adobe Elements 2.0. Both are fairly new, around 2002 or 3 releases and both are rated for XP but once I launch the setup.exe the hourglass shows for about 5 seconds and then goes back to the standard cursor. I checked the Task Manager and in both cases setup.exe is loaded and running and I have to End Process to try the setup again but the same thing happens each time to both apps. They both installed fine and I've been using them for years on my W2K Pro machine.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

So now when i click on uninstall on it in the 'add/remove programs' window, it does nothing but stay there. This must be because its still in the registry. The program is called 'Micrografx'.

Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.
