Disk Drive Write Protected Must Remove - Access Denied

Jul 3, 2008

Unfortunatly, a major thunderstorm passed thru my area and my computer was shut down hard and when I brought it up Windows was trashed, missing system files, some noise about disk-drive errors, etc. So I had to install Windows on another drive on the system. I can copy files from anywhere on the drive to the new windows drive except for "my documents" WEHRE OF COURSE Visual Studio Projects, Word documents, IPod, etc, everything, my important stuff is being kept being kept. The message I get is "Access is denied"

When I bring the system up in Safe Mode with networking and look at the security permission tab for that folder I see that my SID Is not there. When I try and add it (my user ID) it validates it and it looks like I can now have access to it, great, but when I click apply the response is "media is write protected" cannot apply permission changes. When I try and copy a file from my new windows drive to the original I get the message Drive is write protected

Try to defrag it from new windows - same message
Try to repair it from new windows - same message

Can anyone tell me where I could find this media write protect switch and where to change it. Windows XP, NTFS all drives, SCSI

How To Access Protected File In Mounted Disk Image

Sep 21, 2005

I protected my personal files in WXP and made an Acronis true image of the disk. After a disk crash, I rebuilt a new disk instead of using the image but want to get to my personal files by using the Acronis image mount utility. The tool works pretty well, the image looks like drive "G" when mounted and I can see all of my files, except for the personal ones. My new WXP load has the same user name, password, and computer name as the old one did. However, the NTFS security will not let me see or take ownership of my personal files. I dont want to have to restore the old image just to get my files but will if I have to. Any ideas for an easier way?

File Sharing Write Access Denial

May 15, 2007

I have several Administrator users. For each one I have set the username folder in Documents and Settings to allow network sharing including 'allow network users to change my files'. For all but one of the users this works fine and I can access and write files from another PC on the network. However in one case I can only read files and get the following message if I try to write: 'Cannot copy [filename]: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.' The settings appear to be the same for all users so I do not understand why I cannot write in this case. I've tried removing sharing then reapplying it, restarting PC, etc.

File Access Is Denied

Jan 30, 2008

Failed boot and inability to read the file system from a boot cd.

I did a chkdsk /r on the drive, and the file system is back. Ive also done a pass on the drive with a virus scanner and noticed a folder C:Program FilesCommon FilesServices" with the all of the files consisting of randomly generated executable names (514 in total), refer to attached text file for full list.

In explorer, the files show as green.

The problem is the virus scanner logs the file as "access denied".

The file initially had security permissions set to everyone with write only and the owner was some wierd clsid like object.

XP- Old User File 'Access Is Denied'

Oct 1, 2009

Using Windows XP Home, I deleted an old user folder (JAMES), and created a new one reassigning myself as the administrator. Upon deleting, I clicked on 'Keep Files', expecting a shortcut to be available on my new desktop. There is no shortcut.
If I click on Explore, then the old User file (JAMES) I get the following error message: "C:Documents and SettingsJAMES is not accessible. Access is Denied."
If I right click the folder, and click on 'Sharing and Security', it tells me to drag the folder to the .Shared Documents' folder, as I get an error message: "Cannot create or replace JAMES: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."
In addition, any changes I make to the Properties tab (un-click 'read only', click 'Share this folder') do not get saved after I click on 'Apply'. I cannot find any other Securities tab other than th 'Sharing' tab available on XP Home edition.

my computer MB took a dump so I bought a new system. I figured I just boot the new system using my old hard drive. No dice. So I boot the new system using the hard drive and OS that came with it and installed my old drive as a slave. When I try to access the documents and settings folder on the old hard drive so I can pull over the favorites, documents, etc. to my new drive it says access denied. The username and password on my new system are the as on the old one. Any ideas on how to get access to that folder?

Recently I have had to reinstall windows, and I set up my users again, but I noticed that the old accounts were still there in windows explorer under documents and settings, even though they don't come up on the screen when the pc starts up. I've deleted three of them as they were just taking up room, but there is one left that I can't remove. A box pops up saying that it is unaccessable and access is denied.

Xp File Transfers-access Denied Message

May 24, 2010

My XP home edition recently crashed and I wasn't able to get it back up and running with the recovery disc. I ended up using another hard drive and installing XP Pro. I now have the original drive connected as a slave drive but I am unable to access the files I had in Documents and Settings under my user name. It gives me an "access denied" message when I try and open anything under user. When I try to transfer the files with the File Transfer Wizard, the folder comes up blank, but I know the files are there, one of the steps of selecting the files, shows them all there, but even when I select the files individually and transfer them to the C drive with the file wizard, they are not there.

It works fine when connected to a XP SP1 pc so I'm assuming it's a SP2 issue.

Outlook/.pst File Being Denied Access To For Copying

Nov 15, 2007

I'll share what comes up when I right click Properties in each case:A file on a shared folder on my home Windows network that is being denied access to for copying. It is specifically this file as the other files are being read/copied wirhout issue. And, I can open this file on the computer on which the drive physically resides, just not copy it to the other machine. On right clicking file and getting the Properties screen - boxes for Read only and Hidden attributes are unchecked, and the only tabs available are Custom and Summary (no Security tab). An Outlook archive (.pst) that was created on computer A, which was copied on to network B (for backup purposes). Since computer A died, I need to open this archive, but on right clicking the file and requesting open with Outlook, I get the message: file may not exist, you may not have permissions, or may be opened by another user. Same situation on the Properties screen (except only other tab is Summary) as on the earlier point.

WinXP-Pro Classic File-sharing - Access Denied

Oct 19, 2007

I have set up an XP-Pro classic-file-sharing network and want the client computers to share folders on the "server" computer . I have arranged a number groups and placed users into the groups. Each user is a member of GROUP_nnn and also of USER(group). I have shared c:SHARED_ROOT to allow all groups to have full-control on SHARED_ROOT, but for some reason access is denied to the sub-folders SUBF_A , SUBF_B and SUBF_C. As ADMIN, I have set the permissions to allow each user full-control in these sub-folders but I still get "access is denied" when a user tries to navigate into one of the sub folders. I removed INHERIT from the SHARED_ROOT and from each of the sub-folders.

Do I have to "share" the subfolders? Should I allow INHERIT on the subfolders?

I use a XP SP3.. n in my removable hdd automatically contain an 'autorun.inf'.it emerge after i connect the hdd to my frens pcs.. n whenever i double-click each partition of the hdd, an autorun file is activated. I looked up in my protected system files n found out that there is suspicious autorun.inf file show up as system files in each partition. but i knew there shouldn't be any info files, despite it is a system file. i think it also kind of virus jus it uses the standard autorun.inf for an info file, so that there is no any antivirus can detect it as a VIRUS.it seems that i couldn't delete it even i(as the administrator) cannot get access to change the attributes in virtual DOS command prompt - n i dunno how to get a real MS-DOS n don say to del/ah/f @ del /a:h /f delete it. access is denied.

Access Denied To An Encrypted Text File After Reformat

Jun 4, 2008

I recently reformatted my computer, but before doing so moved all my documents to my "D" partition so I could easily bring them back after the reformat. I am using Windows XP Professional Sp3. One of the files I saved was encrypted in windows xp (the file's title has a green font color indicates it is encrypted). When I try to open it it just says 'access denied'. I tried opening it on Administrator account and that also didn't work. I am using the same windows account name and my computer name is identical to the way it was before the reformat. When I right click the file, go to properties, advanced, details.. it shows:

"Users who can transparently access this file: Me@my-desktop (some certificate thumbprint in hex here) That user name "me" and the computer name "my-desktop" are identical to the user name and computer name I have on the computer now.
