i resintly just did a windows xp repair of the os disk and i changed my computers name not knowing that it would cause thsi probleam, when i try to take stuff of my old accounts desktop and documents i get Access Denied .. i have tryed everything to get my files back but i can't access it, and i don't remember what my comps name was befor i changed it

then i clicked on Services(Local) then i scrolled down the list to Windows Installer, where it says status, it is blank. It doesn't say stopped or started so i clicked on start the service and i got an error 5 message; Could not start the Windows Installer,access is denied. I seem to be getting the same error message for some of the other services too. I just completed a system restore on my eMachines computer. I have Windows XP. Now, I had one folder that I backed up, but now everytime I try to enter it, it says Access Denied. I did hide this folder on my hard drive before, but all of my other hidden folders that I backed up work fine. I would really appreciate it if somebody could tell me how to gain access to this folder, I have very important information in it.

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy computer MB took a dump so I bought a new system. I figured I just boot the new system using my old hard drive. No dice. So I boot the new system using the hard drive and OS that came with it and installed my old drive as a slave. When I try to access the documents and settings folder on the old hard drive so I can pull over the favorites, documents, etc. to my new drive it says access denied. The username and password on my new system are the as on the old one. Any ideas on how to get access to that folder?

I have tried restoring system to earlier times with negative results. Sony did not help. I can't even load Norton, buy things, see my bank statements, etc. Here may be a clue. I am sometimes told my system won't accept ActiveX code. I am also told I need to add a drive. I press continue and system runs OK (except the the security problem).

All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFor a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....
I downloaded the IE 7(beta) and I really do like it! But I have one problem with it.When I try to access other email accounts such as yahoo, a message comes up say "Not Optimized".Then it gives me the option to go back to IE6 or Yahoo browser or Netscape.I want to keep IE7.What can I do so that I may be able to access other email accounts with IE7?

Sygate firewall icon in system tray has disappeared in admin account but shows up in user account Just now, I installed trillion and I can use it in admin mode but can't see it in user account.I tried to go through control panel --> add/remove programs and checked access tab there but couldn't do much useful.

View 14 Replies View RelatedUnable to log in user name and password. Also from control panel when i click user accounts it goes to control user passwords 2 window not to the xp styled user accounts window where i can add pictures etc.
I checked my local and group policies but couldn't find anything there because it always shows the error while entering the name and passwords.
Files on my second hard drive were shared on the network (level 4, Network users could only read) and primary hard drive was reformatted and Windows XP sp2 was installed.(without the files being unshared) Now when trying to access the files the error "Access Denied" occurs and I cant access or delete the files (would really like to recover the data about four years worth of work taking up about 75% of the hard drive)

I was not able to restore the system back to a previous state, nor was I able to back-up my documents, so I was forced to reinstall Windows XP Professional version 2002 and all of my other applications. A new Active Directory was created, giving me new user accounts, even though I used the same user names that had been created under the old installation. Under one of the old user accounts, I had a folder that was password protected, and it contained several important documents. Since the new Active Directory does not recognize that old user folder, I can not gain access to the folder to retrieve the files, even when logged on as the administrator. I get an error message that reads: Documents and Settings My Documents is not accessible.

I now have a new lodger moving in, and she needs the pc for studying. I have set her a limited account up, but how do I restrict her from a) downloading and b) accessing my folders.I have tried the share /unshare, but when I log on her as her, I can still view my own folders. If I right click on one of my folders, and then go to properties/sharing, it does say 'to share this folder with other users on the computer' drag to shared documents - I have not done this, so thoughtit would not be shared. Where it says' To make this folder and its subfolders private so that only you can access, select the follwing box' - That box is greyed out, so I cannot do anything!

It has all my music, videos, photos, & work for things I do in it. I can get into my 'WINDOWS' folder and 'Program Files' but not that.
My computer started acting up. I ended up having to do a system recovery. When I did this though, it deleted all of my names (User accounts). In Windows Explorer I can still see them though, and even access the old files of that one.
Now, the main user account I used on this computer needed a password, so I assume that is why it is giving me an access denied message when I try to open it.
Is there any way I could be able to see these files? As I said, the accounts are erased from the main welcome page, so I wouldn't be able to click on it from there to type in a password.
I had to re-install Windows XP Sp2 and I'm having a problem with the mailboxes and other files in my Eudora directory. Eudora is receiving access denied to the mailboxes and I cannot rename, copy or move the email box files with Windows Explore. I get an "access denied" error.

i wanted to merge 2 partitions using partition magic 8. i igot the thing started but got an error 1552: frs entry is free
so i booted and the new partition was unaccessible (small hd icon with a question mark). i rebooted again and the partition was online but i couldnt access my data on it. i ran chkdsk /f, it corrected loads of errors but i still cant access my data. it says: "access is denied". i really cant afford to lose this data.

I did a chkdsk /r on the drive, and the file system is back. Ive also done a pass on the drive with a virus scanner and noticed a folder C:Program FilesCommon FilesServices" with the all of the files consisting of randomly generated executable names (514 in total), refer to attached text file for full list.
In explorer, the files show as green.
The problem is the virus scanner logs the file as "access denied".
The file initially had security permissions set to everyone with write only and the owner was some wierd clsid like object.
I have a Dell 4500 using Windows XP who's processor died. I removed the hard drive and attached it to my Dell 1150 via a IDE/USB adapter kit. It appears that everything is available. However, when I go to 'Documents and SettingsJustJeff206documents it states that it is not accessible and that Access is denied. Other files that are not under my directory can be accessed. I have run Chkdisk with no problems detected.

I created 3 new accounts (1 admin and 2 power users) on the rebuilt PC. When to you try to access a new rebuilt PC user account shared folder file from the other PC, I receive a read only and access denied message.
