Missing Files - Cannot Access The Control Panel

i have a 8 month old computer with 512Mb RAM 3Ghz intel P4 processer and a 160Gb hard drive. basically i think there are missing system files because my computer has slowed right down when opening folders / applications and i cannot access the control panel (it says windows explorer has had to close). i run the free AVG virus scanner, Zone Alarm firewall and the AOL spyware protection.

I keep getting what I believe is a fake windows security alert, which reads: Warning! Potential Spyware Operation! Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files. I cannot access Control Panel. Cannot print and the computer does not recognize me as the administrator.

I run Windows xp sp2, I often use hibernation option, recently I am unable to do this. When I go into power options in the control panel the hibernation tab is missing, also in the turn off computer options in the start menu the standby tab is greyed out

My folder options is missing in the control panel as well as in the tools menu. only options that show in tools menu are (Map Network Drive,Disconnect Network Drive,Synchronize)

When I go to the control panel and then into Display, the only tabs that I have are screen saver and settings. I read a similiar problem and did everything that was mentioned there but NOTHING HELPED. My desktop is a black background. I did have a w32.desktophighjack oleext32.dll How do I restore the display tabs?

I've gone through and removed hundreds of viruses and cleaned it up pretty well. However, I can't access the CONTROL PANEL because it is missing from the START menu. I checked the start button properties, and it isn't listed in the customize/advanced menu. It's just not there. I'm fairly certain that I've gotten all the virus and spyware activity off the computer. I've now scanned it with 3 separate programs. I've tried booting into Safe Mode and Also logging on as Administrator (in safe mode), but it won't re-appear. I've even done the cmd: mmc / add/remove snap-in / add "groups" (as directed by another website) but "groups" isn't even listed. Come to think of it, it's not listed in this computer either (xp home).

well im havin trouble reaching my control panel.when i try to access it, it loads up then closes it automatically and my whole desktop is gone,and justs shows my wallpaper.but in a lil while it comes back.everytime i try to access it, it wont let me and it justs closes and does it over again.also my other problem is that i can't install my service pack 2 it says that it has been "terminated" or sumthin like that.and when i keep on doing it and still says even in safe mode.so u guys know what problem lies here?

My internet options icon has gone missing in control panel when I click on it in tools in internet explorer nothing happens. I have tried a few spyware scans nothing significant found, also one system restore to the previouse day internet options did not appear. I've been reading other members' problems with missing control panels and settings. I have a similar problem. I can't access my time and setting. I have no control panel. Each time I click on the time I receive this message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I'm the admin. and I can't access anything. I tried clicking properties, start menu, advance, but there is no control panel.

I've seen similar recent threads opened detailing similar problems you've looked into. My control panel icon has vanished from my start menu, the link to it in My Computer has gone too and when I try to access it via the Run function using control.exe I am greeted with the message of "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, please contact your administrator".I'm sure this is a malware problem I've picked up off the web but I've got no idea of how to fix the problem. Your help would be very gratefully received.

I got a friend who is having problems with his XP. His start menu shows all the icons for programs but under some things like My Computer, and some others, there is no text or title text. On Facebook, you can see a person's picture on the feed, but no name. In Firefox, with new tabs, it doesn't show what the tab titles are. Control panel too also shows all icons and no title.

When I click on Control Panel or My Computer icon nothing happens. I think these files were deleted. My daughter was uninstalling McAfee and had to boot into safe mode to manually delete McAfee. This must have deleted the files needed for the Control Panel & My Computer. I tried to reinstall windows XP from the original disk that came with my computer.

After my pc has been infected by the "bagle prague" (hldrrr/wintems/flec006/srosa) i got cleaned by a software called Regrun. But the malwares have left some problems on my pc. The main problem is : In Control Panel / Folder option / View, i cant find the options related to "show hidden files". In this forum there is a solution already posted,but it didnt solve my problem.

When I try to use the control panel, I get an error message access to the specific devise path or file is denied. Some items work, but I get the same message when I try to run spybot, adaware, or when I try to manually load norton.

I want a single desktop click to enable/disable windows XP taskbar auto hide.I can do this if I write a script for the AutoHotkey macro tool to open the relevant dialog box and then check or uncheck the appropriate check box.I'd like to open the dialog box with a command line from AutoHotkey, or a similar operation. Right-clicking the taskbar even in the program is uncool.The catch is, I can execute any CP dialog EXCEPT this one as a command line, either passing a dialog parameter to Control.exe or else using a *.cpl file name with Control.exe or directly. But I can't find "Taskbar and Start Menu".

A couple of days ago I stupidly opened a reg file which ended up slowly destroying my computer. THe first sign was applications taking longer to open. It would come up with 'Application error' then after pressing ok, I opened it again and it opened with success. It also took me a couple of goes to open the Task manager as well. The next thing I noticed was sometimes, explorer.exe wouldn't open so I would have to manually type it in via Task manager. Once Task Manager was opened, I would notice hundereds of drwatson's, which I had to end task. Now it seems my Laptop is working fine, however, there's a problem. It says all my files are there, but I can only access the program file ones (and even most of them don't open). All the main files, which were located in My Documents, I can't access. I'm on a new account Windows XP made, but the old account is still there, however, when I go to Control Panel, only my new account appears, not the old one. I go to Documents And Settings and the folder is there, however, it says it's empty. When I double click it, an error pops up saying, 'Access is denied.' I know all my files are there because I have 50 GB's of space and I only have 10 GB's free space remaining. I highlighted all the files (excluding My documents) and it came to a total of 10 GB's only. There's still that extra 30 I had located in My documents.

I can not get a photo or anything other than a "color" to be my desktop wallpaper. When I am in the control panel - display - the only buttons that are active are the "browse" and "color" buttons. The "position" button does not work. I can't even get one of the Windows backgrounds to display. The photo I choose to use is there somewhere because it is visible briefly when I start mycomputer. Then it disappears and is replaced by a "color" only screen.This is a very recent problem. I'm guessing some settings are incorrect.

I accidently posted this in "Vista" so I'm reposting it here as the operating system I have is XP Professional. I'm having a problem with "Display" in the Control Panel. Yesterday I visited a website and opened a file. After I did that, my wallpaper changed and it appeared to be whatever the website was. I was able to somehow get it off (don't ask me what I did, I couldn't tell you). Now, when I click on "Display" in the Control Panel and go to "Desk Top", the only thing that I can change is the color and I can also click on "Customize Desktop", but I cannot change the background or click on browse...".

When I try to open "Control Panel" it gives me an error dialog box that says Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "Control Panel" has been taking longer and longer to load, but now it just stops. Running Windows XP Service Pack 2.
