Long Delay Opening MS Office Files By Double-clicking
Nov 6, 2006
I'm running XP home SP2. I have MS Office 2003 with all updates. The problem I'm having is when I double click on any MS office file (powerpoint, word, excel, etc), it takes about 1-3 minutes to open. When I look at the task manager, the CPU is 99% idle and no task appears to be using many resources. It's not the anti-virus SW because I've removed it from the system and still have this problem. It's also not network related because I've removed it from all networks and still have the problem. If I open the program that the file is associated with (ie MS word for a *.doc file) and then select file/open, it opens fine. I don't think it's just a MS office problem, because the same thing occurs when I try to click on a weblink within a document or application. It takes 1-3 minutes for IE explorer to open and go to the web page. I think it may be due to some security patch, but I don't know which one.
After right-clicking or hitting delete on a file, I have a 15-20s wait before anything happens. After doing it once, it is fast to do so to the next file (doing a few rar's or something), but as soon as I don't touch any files for about a minute or two, it goes back to the huge delay to perform anything. I've tried defragging and unchecking 'Automatically search for network folders and printers'.
I'm running XP Pro Edition and when I double click on a ZIP file it does nothing (it used to though). I've tried associating ZIP files with WinZip and PicoZip and still the same problem.I am able to open WinZip or PicoZip and then open ZIP files from the program.
whenever I try to double click a file, Ie. a .txt or a small .jpg from explorer it takes aprrox 1 minute to open the file, it's certainly not the capability of the machine as it has just started occuring, and all my other programs are working fine.
This is not a very serious problem because I have discovered several work-arounds for it. But I am sick of it and I would like to know how to fix it.I am using Windows XP Home SP2. I like to use Windows Explorer to open all my files by double-clicking them. I also like to design actions for the context menu, such as "view" to open in Firefox or "edit" to open in Word. I keep having problems with files with spaces anywhere in the file path. I would like to be able to use spaces in my file names and store files in directories with spaces. For example, I have problems storing files anywhere in "My Documents" or "Desktop" because those folders are subfolders of C:Documents and Settings and Windows won't let me rename "Documents and Settings" because it is a system folder.
I double click on a Jpeg it opens in Windows Paint instead of the Windows Fax and Picture viewer as it has always done.BMP and GIFS still open correctly When I check under properties it states that Windows Picture and Fax viewer is the programme it opens with and that is highlighted in the drop down column. I can open them when I use the right click drop down menu and select preview, then it will open in the viewer. I have ran Norton Antivirus, spybot, Ewido, adaware. I have tried changing the Jpegs to open with paint, then changing it back again, still won't budge.
Essentially the symptoms are this:1.Opening files through Windows Explorer results in a 20 to 30 second pause before the files open. This happens on local and network drives.2.Executable files or applications open immediately. Also files open immediately from inside the application e.g. from Excel open dialog box.3. In explorer, right-clicking on files results in a 20-30 second delay in bringing up the menu, while with executables the menu comes up immediately.
When I click on a button I get a clicking sound which is OK when changing a page etc, but the clicking sound also clicks every 40 sec's or so, and is quite annoying, dose anybody know why it dose this, and can it be stopped.I diden't notice it when I had ME but now I have XP Pro it is very loud.
Currently I have been this problem once this in a while. Whenever I one click, it does what double clicking do. It doesn't happen always, but it happens once in a while. Somebody told me its a bug in Windows where you clicked only once, but Windows think you have double clicked.
i'm using xp home edition sp2 and an epson photo R800. The problem is, when I print a document or photo, I sometimes have to wait upto a couple of hours for it to print. I have changed the print priority to 99 but still the same. I have re-installed the drivers and checked all the settings and i can't see anything thats different as it used to print immediatly. I have tried changing to print immediatly after first page/after last page and everything else i can think of. I also have another PC on my w/less network sharing this printer but this has the same delay.

I have run the troubleshooters but to no avail.
i have a problem when i click on an item (this only happens sumtimes like 50% of the time) it takes forEVER! ! i mean forever seriously and then it opens in like 20 or 30 mins
haii all techies i have a problem which has been pissing me for almost 3 weeks... As i start up my computer i become stuck with the desktop background after the welcome screen and the desktop icons and start button arrive too late almost taking more than 8 minutes... i am sure windows has loaded and i could hear the start up sound but not the icons and taskbar which appears only after long time.i have analyzed this problem for all these weeks ..i have come up with the conclusion that its a RPC(Remote Procedure Call) which is creating this problem..i diagnosed this when i could still start up task manager when i have desktop background and i end an svchost.exe process....Suddently a shutdown screen with a time down count of 1 minute appears saying that(RPC has been unexpectedly terminated..the system is going to shut down..save ur work..blah blah) ...But then all icons starts appearing and taskbar gets loaded...i rush into run command and type "shutdown -a" and the screen closes and i continue my work..
When I turn on my lap top, Acer Travelmate 2355LC, there are a couple of quiet clicks, then nothing. If left for about 10 minutes, it starts up normaly. Sometimes it starts normally from the beginning. It has an Intel Celron M360 processor (1.4 GHz, 400 MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache) 40 BG HDD 256MB DDR, I've cleaned everything up. Should I try and repair? I would like to avoid reformatting if possible.
Suddenly my PC is delaying (5 minutes or so) to boot an open the OS. It shows a black screen with a text about reviewing the memory while showing a blinking hyphen. I did enter through F8 to THE LAST CONFIGURATION THAT WORK WELL but nothing happened. After that the operation es absolutly normal. Any idea about getting back to normal startups?
My computer has a constant delay opening programs for the first time. For example, I'll open Internet Explorer (or any program) and my computer will take 30 minutes to open it. While it's doing that, I can hear my computer "working" which sounds like a grinding noise. Programs on either my C or D drive do this, so it doesn't seem like a problem with my hard drive. I can't do anything (or very little) while it's opening something. Task Manager won't open, for example. I've done a spyware/virus check and there is nothing. It's not a slow computer. It has 1gig of RAM and more than 2.6Ghz. This didn't use to happen.
so i dunno what i horked one day...but for the past year when i double click a folder ( i.e My Documents or files contained within ) i get the search box instead of the folder opening right up. In order for me to open a folder, i need to right-click and 'open any way for me to tweak this back into some sort of normalcy?
Speed up the start menu delay1. Download and install Powertoys for Windows XP.2. Open Tweak UI for WinXP and select Mouse. Under Menu Speed move the slider all the way over to fast.3. Restart the computerThis also works using TweakUI 1.33 for Win9x/ME/2K
A week or 2 ago my XP (sp.2) system started taking a long time to start, about 3 minutes. I can't think of any application I've added during this time.I removed all apps from the StartUp folders. After turning the system on the opening splash screen comes up and then promptlythe image for my wallpaper (in use long before this problem). Then it pauses for 1-2 minutes.Ctrl-alt-del can be invoked. It shows 3-10% cpu use, little I/O.The process continues with the appearance of the desktop icons and the taskbar.
Whenever I click on something, say, msnm or aim or whatever, a small installing window pops up and says "please wait while window configures Microsoft Office XP professional with front page". It's pretty annoying that this happens a lot. Please show me how to fix this and make this annoying thing goes away.
i recently reformatted and got all my stuff back, but now i cant open up my pictures by double clicking on them. i can open them by going rightclick>open with, but thats just annoying.
Can anyone tell me how to change my setting for clicking to open a folder for my home computer. When I dbl click with left mouse button It goes to the search screen. I have to right click and choose "open". On my computer at work when I left click a folder it will open and right click a folder the "open option is on top of the list and on my home computer the "search " option is on top.
When I double click using the left mouse button on a file or folder, the file or folder does not open. Instead the search window comes up. This has just happened recently. Right clicking on the mouse gives me the option of opening the file or folder.
I don't know what happen I can't open my c: drive or other hard drives happen the same thing so i tried right click and choose open option that didn't work as well error message just say that can't find application program to open and i only can view the file by right click on the start button and select explore to view file on my hard drive.
I somehow added some new options to the right-click menu when clicking on hard drives so now when I double click to open a directory, it opens "find" window. Any help on how to solve this? I tried on a window tools -> directory options -> file types -> Drive -> advanced but I can not remove or edit those action on the list. I can only add or make default but those two don't help."I don't even have a "Drive" option, so I'm totally nonplussed.XP Pro, SP2 with all updates.
When i double click on local disk C it opens up search. I think this may be something to do with file types in folder options but im not sure. Any help?
I update the folder right click menu as follow To cause the Find tool to open when you double-click a folder, follow these steps: Double-click My Computer On the View menu, click Options. Click the File Types tab.In the Registered File Types box, click File Folder, and then click Edit.In the Actions box, click Find and then click Set Default.Click Close, and then click Close. After you follow these steps, double-clicking a folder causes the Find tool to open. Now I want to know is it possible to roll back the abve changes because due to the above change double click property of the folder is changed to find always. I want the double click property to show the content of the folder.
I use XP Home edition. I do not know how I have change the Window operating system setting that when I double click on most of the folders in my computer it goes to a searh menu. Only "My Document" folder is working correctly (when I double click on it, it opens the folder rather than going to search mode). I have tried all the folder's option setting and anything else I can think of, still the folders do not open properly. I have to right click on the folder and select open option. Above "Open" option there is "Search" option in bold letters.
