Long Pause After Selecting 50+ Files
Sep 3, 2005
In explorer I select a long list of files (i.e. 50+ files apx 15MB each) the selection process is fast. But after all the files are selected I want to del them or copy them or whatever... so I right click my mouse to get to the 'right click menu' but at this point there is a LONG pause. This pause can be between 10-20 seconds depending on how many files I have highlighted

Every time I try to open a file (whether it be an .mp3 or .txt or whatever) my computer pauses for about 7 seconds and then opens the file. I know it's not a problem with a specific program because it happens to virtually all the files on my computer.

When I try to select multiple files to move, delete, copy etc. I use the keyboard Ctrl key to accomplish this. Unfortunately half the time or more this also results in a copy of the files being made. I believe the keyboard trick for copying multiple files should be Ctrl + C. Anybody know how to use the Ctrl key to select only without any copy being made.

Files just disappear from the Recycle Bin all of their own accord. Sometimes the files are there for only minutes, other times they survive through the shut-down

Essentially the symptoms are this:1.Opening files through Windows Explorer results in a 20 to 30 second pause before the files open. This happens on local and network drives.2.Executable files or applications open immediately. Also files open immediately from inside the application e.g. from Excel open dialog box.3. In explorer, right-clicking on files results in a 20-30 second delay in bringing up the menu, while with executables the menu comes up immediately.

I'm running XP home SP2. I have MS Office 2003 with all updates. The problem I'm having is when I double click on any MS office file (powerpoint, word, excel, etc), it takes about 1-3 minutes to open. When I look at the task manager, the CPU is 99% idle and no task appears to be using many resources. It's not the anti-virus SW because I've removed it from the system and still have this problem. It's also not network related because I've removed it from all networks and still have the problem. If I open the program that the file is associated with (ie MS word for a *.doc file) and then select file/open, it opens fine. I don't think it's just a MS office problem, because the same thing occurs when I try to click on a weblink within a document or application. It takes 1-3 minutes for IE explorer to open and go to the web page. I think it may be due to some security patch, but I don't know which one.

Currently using XP Pro, SP2 with P4 3.2, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD (90% free). While using explorer to open a folder and display the files in it, the illustrator (ai) files (hundreds of it in one folder) were shown with the generic/windows system icons first and gradually been transform to the Illustrator files icon. The process took so long and made a system in hold/freeze. It happens as well when tried open files using File Open in Adobe Illustrator or Design in the very same folder and files. I've tried solve it using Display Appearance Effect as well as using regedit to modify the value on Max Cached Icons in registry but didn't work.

I bought a new Dell Dimension 2400 about a year ago. It runs Windows XP Home. I don't remember all of my specs (I'm at work), but here is my problem.
First, booting up takes a long...time. When I finally log in, I get an error message: HP AiO Device Object failed: hRes = 0x800706BAThe RPC Server is unavailable.Maximum retry attempts exceeded.I click ok and it brings up my desktop, but originally would not bring up my Start button and taskbar. After messing with it all day yesterday, I finally got a taskbar, but not my usual one. I can open some programs, but can't save any files to floppy or CD. Everything is very slow...and I do mean very! Most of the time the Task Manager will show "Not Responding", sometimes it will eventually start running again and sometimes I just have to "End Process".

when I try to open a Lotus WordPro file (*lwp) inside a folder it can take 30 seconds or more to open. Sometimes I have to click on the file a second time at which time I get a(not responding) message on the folder bar.If I open the same file by starting WordPro and selecting the same file from among recently opened files it opens almost instantly. Other types of files don't seem to be affected the system crashes when I right click on a folder to try and display properties.

What are the recommendations for "Temporary Internet Files".In large environments should we default the size limit? The default settings is normally huge as disk drives are so big.Users end up with 10s of thousands of files in this folder than can take 20 minutes to clean out. Many IE issues are also resolved by deleting temp internet files. We default the setting "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" on all systems but this does not seem to always delete everything.

Occasionally when I'm typing out something in a text box, program, whatever, my cursor will just pause and several keystrokes might be dropped if I'm typing fast. This seems to happen randomly in spurts, like some days it's really bad and other days the problem doesn't occur. However, something related happens frequently in games, where I might press a key to go forward and it'll register as being continually pressed until I press the key once again. Specific keys don't do this, it seems like all of them do!

In XP, as far as I know, the system has to restart in order to allow chkdsk to work on the drive. Well, it takes a while and I miss the messages at the end of the test. I have no idea whether it corrected anything or whether everything turned up fine. How can I have it wait for me to view the results? Or where can I find the results at?Is there a way to run chkdsk in XP without rebooting? What happens if I attempt this in safe mode?

Every once in a while when viewing an HTML email or some web pages, upon accessing the page the program (IE or Outlook 2003) will pause while there is vigorous access of the hard disk for 5 to 10 seconds, then the HTML file will be displayed. It is as if the computer is loading a viewer or pagefile or something.

It takes about 15 seconds for me to open a folder in XP Pro SP2. This is on a fast machine. It used to take a second. I've wracked my brains trying to think of what I did to cause this, but I can't think of a thing. Maybe an automatic update?

when running chkdsk /f at command prompt in windows, i get the message about drive being in use, would you like to run chkdsk after next restart. I choose yes and restart the computer. But, after chkdsk runs, I dont have time to read the results as it quickly continues to load the OS when it is finished. Chkdsk (without /f) in cmd in windows tells me there is a problem with my file system although I do not have any bad sectors. I have run chkdsk /f (after restart) twice and it still has not fixed whatever the error is.

I'm running XP Home, SP3, and I have an intermittent problem, which I think may be windows based. From time to time, when I click on an icon on the home screen, all the icons behind it will also show as having been selected (and there will be a screen message saying that it will take a long time to load <number> programs, do you want to proceed?).

I come now with a new problem. I pretended for some time I did not care, but that is now making me pull the hair from my head.I installed something (which I did not pay attention to at that time and I don't remember what it was) and too many other programs after that (programs I constantly use, and therefore I don't want to get rid of). If I roll back my computer to an earlier time to dismiss this problem, I would be uninstalling all those valuable programs I am talking about

Upon start-up, and after selecting a user..usually Christine, my wife [there are 4 users set-up] at the desktop screen I immediately get a pop-up error box that reads WUAUCLT.exe encountered an error and needs to close. It also goes on to read...if you want to send this message to Microsoft click this and then, of course, there is the Don't Send option as well. I usually click the don't send option....10 seconds later the box pops back up...I went to Task Mgr a few times and saw it [wuauclt.exe] running in Processes and was able to stop it from running. However, it is not always in Task Mgr to stop!

my computer was infected with -powered by Zeno' spyware and I was advised to start in safe mode to remove some files. I ticked safemode under boot.ini in msconfig and my computer restarted, but only got as far as the Windows XP loadup page before rebooting itself. I have tried 'last known good configuration' etc, but to no avail... the computer simpl will not get past this point. I decided to reinstall (repair) Windows XP, but unfortunately, I cannot do this because it reaches a screen where it says setup cannot complete under safe mode. I can't turn this safemode off though, because I can't get the computer on to reaccess boot.ini.

An article previously published und Q226476 explains how to change the default where the drive opens and it applies to Windows 98 SE. It says to click START and then FOLDER OPTIONS, then on the FILE TYPES tab, click DRIVE and click EDIT.You can do everything except the last click. There is no EDIT.I would like to have the drive open to explorer rather than open the FIND window.
