the proses explorer feeps freesing. when i first got the computer it was realy fast but now its so slow i takes atleast 5 secondsto just open the start bar, can someone tell me how to fix this.
View 1 RepliesI have two machines that are slow to display the contents of drive C in Windows Explorer. It will take sometimes as much as 30 seconds.Once it has displayed the contents of drive C, I can close Windows Explorer and if I go back to it again soon, everything is as fast as I would expect it to be.
I have a pen4 computer with 1 GB of memory and lots of free space on the hard drive. when I click or try to open explorer or Firefox, it just sets there for sometimes 4 or 5 minutes and then it opens. I have a cable modem with other computer on it and none of them have problems.
When I click on the Icon, the hour glass comes up for a few seconds and then goes away, there does not seem to be any activity on the HD and then it all opens and works fine until it is closed again...
Explorer.exe very slow to show sub directory after clicking on C Drive
1) I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a fairly new Dell Dimension 8300 series with a Pentium 3 processor and 1 Gig of Ram. I have 100 gig hard drive of which about 50 gigs are full of all types of files, avi, mpeg, jpeg, audio files, program files, you name it!
2) I have downloaded all of the latest Windows XP updates.
3) My computer starts fine and opens to the standard desktop fairly easily and quickly.
3) I then click on explorer.exe icon on my desk top and Window Explorer opens.
whenever i start up my computer, internet explorer tries to open up a site called 'chatraffic.com' but it cannot open the site. i've tried numerous things to get the internet explorer to not come up anymore, but nothing has worked. i've tried getting spyware, but about 5 different ones didnt do the trick. does anyone know how i can get this to stop occurring?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I am running a couple of recent worm tools from Symantec and so far, nothing. Could this be a hardware problem or can someone tell me something I am missing?

I understand that there is a way to eliminate items in the start-up file but having been to the site, I cannot determine which items to delete without messing up my system. View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, explorer.exe (nothing to do with Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer) sometimes shoots up and uses 100% of the CPU. Which makes the computer useless unless you shut explorer.exe down in the Task manager and restart it. I haven't been able to see a pattern. It's almost completely random, from what I've seen. I've got Service Pack 2 and all patches from Windows Update, plus any I could easily find for the motherboard.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout 3 minutes after boot up explore takes up 99-100% of the CPU. I go to task man (ctrl-alt-del) and go to the processes tab and turn it off. The CPU % goes to 0. Then I go to the aps tab and hit new task and turn it back on. In about 3 minutes we are back to 100% of CPU. I now run all my aps through task man but I need to use explorer to move my files around from one folder to another. How do I get explore to stop doing this. I run the virius scan but can't find anything.

Sometimes they open fast but most of the times I have this long delay. Also printing files is a another task that takes a long time. It seems that the printer isn't recoginzed for at least 15 seconds. I am running on a local network using a Linksys router and also am sharing the printer through a computer on the network with a computer that is running Windows 98SE.

For example, I double-click on a PDF, word, excel, txt, jpg, file, it takes between 45 seconds and sometimes even 75 seconds for the application to open. If I however open the aplication first, even by double-clicking the desktop shortcut for the application, it opens immediately. From there, I can locate the file to open which also opens immediately. Also, right-clicking on a document takes also 45-75 seconds for the context menu to appear. Sometimes it doesn't even appear. It can take anywhere from 10-40 seconds to do this. My drive is 40% free.
My computer takes a long time when I try to delete a file (doesn't matter what size or kind of file). Once I click on the file and hit delete the hard drive starts going and after a while I get a confirmation message "Are you sure you want to send file.ext to the recycle bin?" I click yes and then it's hung up again for a while as I watch pieces of paper float accross the screen from a file folder to a recycle bin, and then it finally deletes. This is a new problem on my old machine.I also can't open the recylcing bin, but I can empty it. When I click on the recycle bin it opens a window and shows the "flashlight" icon, the hard drive goes, and it never finished it's process, never displays the recycling bin contents.

Every thing runs pretty slow, Firefox takes 5+ seconds to switch tabs, Thunderbird takes almost that long to open messages, Gaim's buddy list scrolling is extremely slow, Paint Shop Pro/Gimp/Photoshop filters take almost double the time they do on my other weaker IBM (see computer specs). It's just terribly slow.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using winXP and have been for a while without problems.In an instant, while online, doing a file transfer my PC manfested the following problems:
1. Booting up takes alot longer now and once im at the login screen it takes an even greater amount of time to load my profile. it sticks at the loading personal settings message for a while, then once it gets past there it takes a few minutes to load my desktop.
2. I can not open some programs like Media Player. The Error ' can not perform operation-memory too low' appears.In addition i can not access any system tools or programs eg. Help and Support
My data files seem to be fine along with all the other non-system related content on my computer.
3. I can not open my internet connection. It seems to be stuck in connected state even after restarting my computer.(I use a dial-up)
To try and solve ths i tried to get into my network places and modems in the control panel but when i tried i got error messages -something to do with 'network places and telephony services may not be activated, activate them and try again.'Another intersesting issue is that my taskbar has changed and looks like a windows 2000 taskbar now and functions slightly differntly than before. In fact my whole OS looks a bit differnt now.
Well, while I was walking upstairs, I accidentally dropped the computer on the floor as it slipped through my fingers. When I turned on the computer, it booted correctly, except that its slower. I clicked on the start menu, and it takes about 30 minutes, just for it to pop out.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhenever i open an explorer and right click on a file, it will terminate all open explorers as well as take down my launch bar (which will subsequently be rebuilt though). What i want to do is to delete a file, and it does not work with pressing delete either (same effect). But, as i said, the whole conext menu wont open. I am not really aware of newly installed programs, could be wrong on that one though.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhenever i launch internet explorer it takes longer than usual to load. And when i go to type a web address it just freezes and never loads a new webpage. I don;t know what is going on. This has started to happen on friday. I;ve ran the following and they found some stuff and have deleted it but i still have the same problem. I;ve even tried system restore and it still persist. I noticed that when i try to delete my history i get an error about not being able to open shell32.dll or something and that some about a inetcpl.cpl is having a problem.
Currently i am having an issue with the my PC where it is taking arrpox 8-10 minutes to boot from dead. Recycling / rebooting also takes the same time. PC takes around 8-10 minutes to boot, the XP logo screen comes and goes, hangs for around 2 minutes on a black DOS like screen, no commands etc present, then hangs on the desktop image for a few minutes, then get the Window media sound, a few minutes later explore.exe process starts bring up the tool bar. then a few more minutes, may be 5 waiting for it to start and become active.
