I have a Dell PC 8250 and over the past two yrs I have managed somehow to increase my start-up time by inadvertently adding to my start-up file. I understand that there is a way to eliminate items in the start-up file but having been to the site, I cannot determine which items to delete without messing up my system. Please advise, and maybe tell me what the basic start up should look like.

Currently i am having an issue with the my PC where it is taking arrpox 8-10 minutes to boot from dead. Recycling / rebooting also takes the same time. PC takes around 8-10 minutes to boot, the XP logo screen comes and goes, hangs for around 2 minutes on a black DOS like screen, no commands etc present, then hangs on the desktop image for a few minutes, then get the Window media sound, a few minutes later explore.exe process starts bring up the tool bar. then a few more minutes, may be 5 waiting for it to start and become active.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba sat pro 6000 running XP pro which was pre installed, so no discs.Last night I downloaded an upgrade of kapersky and when it asked me to reboot laptop the following happened.A black screen appeared asking if I wanted to start in safe mode and a list of other options, I chose safe mode and the screen filled up with a long list about multi disks partition , windows driver etc.So I closed down and then chose start windows normally from the black page and it then progressed on to scanning the disc which is does. It reports there are no problems and then opens up the black page again, and again and again.I have pressed F8 and I chose disable auto start up and a blue screen came up telling me of a possible problem and to use recovery cd which I don't have. Can anyone advise on how I can start windows so that I can eliminate kapersky or do a system restore.

View 8 Replies View RelatedIm using WinXP pro. when i right click for a menu sometimes it takes up to 45 seconds for the menu to appear. Also when i delete a file (any size) i takes anywhere from 30 to 90 seconds for my delete file prompt to come up.
ive also reinstalled XP to no avail.
when i am double clicking it takes more time to open a file ( any type).write click also takes more time. i have a lot of application installed in my computer thats why i cannot reformat.

So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.
When I start my computer I have several items in there that start also. One being quick time and a few photo programs that do not need to start. Where and how can I add or remove these?

Recently having replaced the mouse with a Logitech Wireless and not having had it start up, I read in the Logitech forum that a workaround would be to go to MSCONGIG and uncheck everything, re- start, then re-check the items I wanted to start up and re-start.
i then check all items in the startup tab and run a normal startup instead of selective.
I did this and now both Logitech and my Webshots program do not start at startup. Is there a workaround or possible change of permissions that I need to do to resolve?
When I right-click, and choose "Remove from this list", nothing happens.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy start menu insists on collapsing itself, hiding all but about 2 or 3 items. It's really annoying; I have to click on the arrow to expand the menu to get to most of my programs. There's plenty of room to display all of the items on the screen, and it doesn't even to seem to choose to keep items I use frequently visible. Does anyone know how to stop this and force it to not hide anything?

I have tried changing the application location and then clicking on the Start Menu item so that I get an error message. The message asks whether I want to remove the item from the Start Menu and I click yes but that too does not work. I am tired of looking through the registry and cannot find anything relevant.

It's appears to be frozen for a minute or so and then start or shutdown.It does start or shutdown properly but it's slow. It can take up to 2 - 3 minutes to either start or shutdown.I noticed that when I start my computer, I see the Windows Update yellow shield appear near the clock and then goes away. Netzero is constantly downloading ads that show up when I go to log on. Now the ads are using audio which is even more annoying. Anyway, I found out where the files are kept and I know the names. But I have alot, and it can get confusing rather quickly, but I found a way to include seperators to organize my data on the start menu.The first thing to do is create a new shortcut on the desktop. Select any file for the target, and under the name of the shortcut, use the trick to add a blank space for the filename (ALT+0160 on the keypad -- making sure NUMLOCK is on). Then click finish.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Acer Veriton M410 UD5000P, 1 x AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ / 2.6 GHz ( Dual-Core ), 3 gibs DDR2 of ram and a sata 300 hd with win xp pro, I remove fom the msconfig startup all those utilities that acer installed to speed up the booting, plus some other tweaks, the partitions from factory came as FAT32, and Norton internet security is installed for 60 days, i am wondering if the delay is cause maybe Norton is checking during boot time or cause the the file system is fat32, any opinion is vey appreciated in orde to speed the boot time, by the way, I don't now if i should remove the register keys related with those utilities that are not any longer on the startup

View 5 Replies View RelatedFor some strange reason my Start Menu items/shortcuts have been deleted (in both my Documents & Settings folder and 'All Users'), except for a blank shortcut (no name, no link) with the 'My Computer' icon. The weird thing is the Start Menu folders and their contents are in tact.Initially I thought I accidentally deleted them so I manually created a few shortcuts back to some of programs, but after restarting Windows, they were gone again and only that mysterious blank shortcut appeared again!I did a full system scan with Norton AntiVirus 2007 and AVG Anti-Spyware and they didn't find anything.

I noticed I had 2 music and picture folders in My Documents. I deleted the Folders that had been moved when I reloacated. When I went back to the start menu, My Music and My Pictures were gone. I looked in properties, and the two items were selected. I went to the registry and the entries for music and pictures were gone in UserShellFolders and ShellFolders. I recreated the entries. After all of this, there are still no icons for Music and Pictures on the start menu.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn last 24 hrs I am getting some very strange and vexing behavior from Windows Explorer and the start menu. Hope someone can help. The start menu programs pop up, but disappear before I can click them. Windows screen flickers at the same time when the start menu items vanish, and also flickers at other times. Fonts on the desktop, once just white, are now showing up white on a black rectangular background - didn't do any theme change. Windows Explorer has been crashing from time to time in the last week, no apparent reason. And the monitors are bleeding. Kidding about that last one, but am expecting it soon.
