I went to turn on my computer and it wanted to do a disk check but i skipped it when i went to log on nothing would load, i would just get an empty background and to load tasks now i have to use Ctrl,Alt,Del and run it from there I've did a disk error check and let it run but nothings happened.
View 2 RepliesI start my computer to just find out that part of my ICONS are gonne. kaput I just have left some folders I create with my photo files and some work from my Univ. but all of the rest of my normal applications as Internet explorer, Firefox, VLC, Winamp, NOD32,etc just disappear from my desktop I try to make a System restore but no success , I double check and all the programs are still in Crogram files, but I have to open the Install folder to run teh exe , is what i did to type this message and open this page.Can you help me guys pls. I already try some instances they say in this forums like the one of opening the reg. of shell and retype explorer.exe ...didn't work The other one that says to click on desktop and click on "show Icons On desktop".didn't work.

These items are (1) set program access and defaults (2) windows catalog and (3) windows update. I don't know where the .exe files are for me to copy back into the start menu folder or if there is a easier way to restore them.

I understand that there is a way to eliminate items in the start-up file but having been to the site, I cannot determine which items to delete without messing up my system. View 14 Replies View RelatedI provide second line support to a remote site up in Scotland. There is one user who has a strange problem on her pc. I need to run a setup.exe file on her pc. If I double click it, nothing happens. This happens for other icons too. However some work fine such as "My Computer" and "My Documents".
1. Logged on as myself, same problem.
2. Copied the file else where to the pc and tried from there.
When I turn on my system this evening all of my desktop item would not work. This window is opening saying that Windows can not open this file, all files have .ink on them. I just found out that I can not get to my e-mail. The only two thing that I can open is My Computer, and the Internet.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI like a clean desktop so I choose to hide my desktop icons and use a desktop toolbar. I arrange items on the toolbar with the ones I use most at the bottom. Since last Friday, the items on the toolbar keep rearranging themselves whenever I shutdown and restart the computer. I have looked every where I know to look and I cannot find a solution. I've tried a System Restore but I get a message that the system cannot be restored to a previous time. You'd think after more than 20 years of working with (and building my own) computers, I'd have seen just about everything, but this is a new one for me.I'm running XP with SP2 installed. I won't install SP3 because I've seen it cause too much trouble on other systems and won't subject mine (or myself) to that mess. I'm not a big Windows fan (and each new version leaves me less of a fan). I learned computers on a CPM system then promptly fell in love with DOS and still prefer it.
I developed a freeze problem about a week ago. When it continued on a daily basis, I started uninstalling software, starting with the most-recently installed. The freeze problem worsened. Eventually the system would begin to load XP, but in the process of loading my desktop items, it would reboot. Got caught in a vicious reboot cycle for a bit. Wouldn't even stabilize long enough for me to disable my desktop items and wouldn't allow me to boot to Safe Mode.Eventually, chkdsk would run (on startup) through steps 1 and 2. Step 3 would show "unspecified error", and XP would boot. Unsuccessfully.
Running XP-Pr0-SP3 on a standalone home PC with 4GB RAM, 300 GB HD split 3- ways with OS on the 'C' drive, a 64- bit processor and TELUS high speed Internet.
Recently having replaced the mouse with a Logitech Wireless and not having had it start up, I read in the Logitech forum that a workaround would be to go to MSCONGIG and uncheck everything, re- start, then re-check the items I wanted to start up and re-start.
i then check all items in the startup tab and run a normal startup instead of selective.
I did this and now both Logitech and my Webshots program do not start at startup. Is there a workaround or possible change of permissions that I need to do to resolve?
When I right-click, and choose "Remove from this list", nothing happens.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy start menu insists on collapsing itself, hiding all but about 2 or 3 items. It's really annoying; I have to click on the arrow to expand the menu to get to most of my programs. There's plenty of room to display all of the items on the screen, and it doesn't even to seem to choose to keep items I use frequently visible. Does anyone know how to stop this and force it to not hide anything?

I have tried changing the application location and then clicking on the Start Menu item so that I get an error message. The message asks whether I want to remove the item from the Start Menu and I click yes but that too does not work. I am tired of looking through the registry and cannot find anything relevant.

The computer usually freezes after showing my wallpaper of desktop items. This is probably because I had installed a few programs.Is there a program or something to that I can use to boot my computer faster?
