I provide second line support to a remote site up in Scotland. There is one user who has a strange problem on her pc. I need to run a setup.exe file on her pc. If I double click it, nothing happens. This happens for other icons too. However some work fine such as "My Computer" and "My Documents".
1. Logged on as myself, same problem.
2. Copied the file else where to the pc and tried from there.
I have tried Googling, but the results are either for Vista - I'm using XP - or they're for the opposite of what I'm looking for. I was going to try it backwards, but no one ever explained HOW so I'm lost.since I reformated my puter 2 months ago, my files will no longer arrange in my folders. If I delete something, a gap appears and stays. If I add a file to the folder, the file sits on top of the other files and stays there - covering the other files. Before I reformated, whenever I deleted or added files, they'd automatically move in to fill in the gaps or move to accommodate the new files.I know I can change the setting in each individual folder, but I have a LOT of folders and would like to have this apply to ALL of them at once. I know this has to be possible since my puter automatically did it BEFORE I reformated.
I right clicked two images from the internet and then clicked on Set as Desktop item. These two images now appear as part of any desktop backgroung that i choose. I cant delete them or get them off of my desktop screen. How do I remove these items?
this is so weird. whenever i try and click a program on my start menuand/or quick launch they don't load. say i click 'windows mediaplayer'. i click it, nothing happens. to get into it i have to rightmouse click 'open'. it's very, very annoying. i need help, please. theonly application that will open the normal way is internet explorer.
I changed my background picture on my "Desktop".Whenever I log off,I still saw a glimpse of the old picture prior to "shut down". I placed my picture to "none", this removed my old picture but now when I "start up", I get my "task bar" but my "desktop icons" do not load for a few minutes.I only have three items on my "desktop", they are "My Computer", "Recycle Bin" & "Network Connections"I am running 2000 pro.
When I turn on my system this evening all of my desktop item would not work. This window is opening saying that Windows can not open this file, all files have .ink on them. I just found out that I can not get to my e-mail. The only two thing that I can open is My Computer, and the Internet.
I know I should know this, but for the life of me, can't remember LOL; when you drag a dialog box or item that's on your desktop, there's an outline of the box that moves before you move the box. How do you turn that off?
I had to manually shut down the computer after a freeze up, almost all my desktop items are gone, i had folders and school papers that i needed so i really need them back, does anyone know how i can get them back or find them?
I want to get rid of the backgrounds on my desktop shortcuts so its only the writing showing...I had it like this before but one day i rebooted and it each of the shortcuts had backgrounds and i hate the way it looks so i dont want them.
My desktop items are highlighted with a blue shadow.I don't know how to eliminate that. My wallpaper is visible and the computer seems to be working fine.
I like a clean desktop so I choose to hide my desktop icons and use a desktop toolbar. I arrange items on the toolbar with the ones I use most at the bottom. Since last Friday, the items on the toolbar keep rearranging themselves whenever I shutdown and restart the computer. I have looked every where I know to look and I cannot find a solution. I've tried a System Restore but I get a message that the system cannot be restored to a previous time. Could there have been a Windows Update that is causing this and if so, how can I get it back the way it was?
The problem is that my desktop items keep aligning on left after each reboot. I have selected Show Desktop Icons and Lock Web items, other options are unchecked. This is driving me crazy because I am constantly having to re-arrange the icons.
Recently all of my icons on my desktop have become locked in palce and this is very annoying as I go through to delete pictures and other files that i am constantly saving to my desktop. I am running on a windows xp media center edition, and YES, I have went to Right click on desktop , Properties, Clicked on the desktop tab, Customize desktop, and I do not have the option to lock my desktop items checked, so I am not sure why they are staying locked in place?
I went to turn on my computer and it wanted to do a disk check but i skipped it when i went to log on nothing would load, i would just get an empty background and to load tasks now i have to use Ctrl,Alt,Del and run it from there I've did a disk error check and let it run but nothings happened.
To crete active desktop items that will operate as if they were an IE window, so that when you click a button or link it goes to the page in the desktop item without opening a new window but for the items I create the links always open a new IE window.
Before I got this dialog box that showd that I could make a folder to have all my unused desktop items in. I click cancel, now several months after I regret. How can I get the dialog box back?
Since I have installed a few new drivers/Software I have been having trouble with my desktop right click menu, the apps I've installed have added 3 new items on this menu and they take ages to load, even though they are not really that necessary and can be accessed without right clicking. I have taken a screen-shot and wondered if there is any way of removing the 3 marked items from my right click menu.
For some reason the fonts are all small on my computer. The name of the desktop items on my desktop, those fonts are all small too. I went to properties and changed the font size to large, and nothing happened, their still small. I even changed the screen resolution on the 'properties', their still small.
I've run across an unusual (to me) boot problem and it is frustrating. You'd think after more than 20 years of working with (and building my own) computers, I'd have seen just about everything, but this is a new one for me.I'm running XP with SP2 installed. I won't install SP3 because I've seen it cause too much trouble on other systems and won't subject mine (or myself) to that mess. I'm not a big Windows fan (and each new version leaves me less of a fan). I learned computers on a CPM system then promptly fell in love with DOS and still prefer it.
I developed a freeze problem about a week ago. When it continued on a daily basis, I started uninstalling software, starting with the most-recently installed. The freeze problem worsened. Eventually the system would begin to load XP, but in the process of loading my desktop items, it would reboot. Got caught in a vicious reboot cycle for a bit. Wouldn't even stabilize long enough for me to disable my desktop items and wouldn't allow me to boot to Safe Mode.Eventually, chkdsk would run (on startup) through steps 1 and 2. Step 3 would show "unspecified error", and XP would boot. Unsuccessfully.
My computer is really slow and it takes hours just to get to the screen where the User names are. Also when i enter my password and try to log in. The computer usually freezes after showing my wallpaper of desktop items. This is probably because I had installed a few programs. Is there a program or something to that I can use to boot my computer faster? I'm desperate also I really need to keep all the files on my computer on my computer. I have been having problems with my cpu being overheated. The CPU fan makes alot of noise.
I have a Presario C700 model C768TU Notebook PC running Vista Home Premium, with a 1.76GHz CPU and 2 GB RAM. The problem I have is actually driving me nuts.I freshly installed Vista after formatting the drive and when I point to the only desktop icon which is the recycle bin I get this dialog asking if I want to send it to the recycle bin.No matter how many times I click on NO it won't go away and in my frustration I reboot the Laptop. have formatted the laptop several times and installed WIndows 7 and had the same problem. I also formatted and partitioned the drive and still had the same problem.I added a few more icons to the desktop and the same thing would happen if I pointed the mouse at them.
This has happened two days in a row now. I log into my account, then when it gets to my desktop, all it shows is my desktop background picture. There are no applications running and there are no startup icons that I can click on. I have to force a restart on my laptop, and then when it starts up again everything is there.
Seems like every time I open some application it puts a link on the start menu, I realize I can delete this by right clicking it and choosing "remove this item from the list". How do I prevent it from being put there in the first place?
I deleted a few items from Start Menu>Programs that I would like to restore. These items are (1) set program access and defaults (2) windows catalog and (3) windows update. I don't know where the .exe files are for me to copy back into the start menu folder or if there is a easier way to restore them.
Does anyone know how to add items to the section of the start menu with all the "MY" folders? I want to add my games and toolbox. I don't want them 'pinned to the start menu' because they will open in a window and I want them in a list, like in the advanced start menu controls. I read somewhere how to do this, but I don't remember where.
I have windows XP and saving a document to or opening a file (like a picture) from the windows Desktop is extremely slow. Opening or saving to another folder is lightning quick.
Got a problem here with a classroom full of Windows XP Pro PCs, where if I put new shortcuts into All UsersDesktop, when a user logs on they can only see the shortcut as an unknown file type which does not run. Any existing shortcuts in All UsersDesktop work ok, just not any new ones! The PC's are on a Windows 2003 Server network (with AD) and have local user profiles.
Remote desktop on the XP Pro I have stopped working all of sudden.
*The Terminal Services service is started. * No errors in the event viewer * The two Remote Access checkboxes are checked in the Remote Tab of the System Control Panel * RDP-Tcp "Port Number" in the registry is set to 3389 * fDenyTSConnections in the registry is set to 0 * TSEnabled in the registry is set to 1
We ended up with a virus AV8. Got rid of the file but now the start button, desktop icons and taskbar are not showing up or working. I have read a lot of the suggestions that people have been giving and I renamed the explorer.exe and can use that, but can't get my desktop restored nor my taskbar back.
