I am a having a problem with my computer being slow, when i have one window open and i try to open another one with internet explorer, when i click the start icon it takes awhile for that window to close and another google to start
View 10 RepliesEvery thing runs pretty slow, Firefox takes 5+ seconds to switch tabs, Thunderbird takes almost that long to open messages, Gaim's buddy list scrolling is extremely slow, Paint Shop Pro/Gimp/Photoshop filters take almost double the time they do on my other weaker IBM (see computer specs). It's just terribly slow.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI having trouble opening data files such as Word or Lotus 123. They eventually do open but it take forever (probably 20 seconds). Sometimes they open fast but most of the times I have this long delay. Also printing files is a another task that takes a long time. It seems that the printer isn't recoginzed for at least 15 seconds. I am running on a local network using a Linksys router and also am sharing the printer through a computer on the network with a computer that is running Windows 98SE.

PC takes around 8-10 minutes to boot, the XP logo screen comes and goes, hangs for around 2 minutes on a black DOS like screen, no commands etc present, then hangs on the desktop image for a few minutes, then get the Window media sound, a few minutes later explore.exe process starts bring up the tool bar. then a few more minutes, may be 5 waiting for it to start and become active.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a pen4 computer with 1 GB of memory and lots of free space on the hard drive. when I click or try to open explorer or Firefox, it just sets there for sometimes 4 or 5 minutes and then it opens. I have a cable modem with other computer on it and none of them have problems.
When I click on the Icon, the hour glass comes up for a few seconds and then goes away, there does not seem to be any activity on the HD and then it all opens and works fine until it is closed again...
I have XPsp2. Why does it take Control Panel and in particular, Add/Remove Programs such a long time to open and populate its list.
It can take anywhere from 10-40 seconds to do this. My drive is 40% free.
My computer takes a long time when I try to delete a file (doesn't matter what size or kind of file). Once I click on the file and hit delete the hard drive starts going and after a while I get a confirmation message "Are you sure you want to send file.ext to the recycle bin?" I click yes and then it's hung up again for a while as I watch pieces of paper float accross the screen from a file folder to a recycle bin, and then it finally deletes. This is a new problem on my old machine.I also can't open the recylcing bin, but I can empty it. When I click on the recycle bin it opens a window and shows the "flashlight" icon, the hard drive goes, and it never finished it's process, never displays the recycling bin contents.

When I attempt to see the file system in Explorer of one of the WinXP machines by clicking on "Computers Near Me"/Computer Name, it takes about a minute for the list of logical hard disks to appear. This is true no matter which of the other computers this one is accessed from. No other computer behaves like this. When I click on another computer name in Explorer, the list of hard disks appears almost instantaneously. Moreover, only one installation of WinXP behaves like this -- the one with a clean install of WinXP; the WinXP installation that is an upgrade of Win2K displays its logical hard disks very quickly. Once the list of logical disks appears, clicking on one entry produces a list of the folders in the root directory almost instantaneously.

It will take sometimes as much as 30 seconds.Once it has displayed the contents of drive C, I can close Windows Explorer and if I go back to it again soon, everything is as fast as I would expect it to be.

1) I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a fairly new Dell Dimension 8300 series with a Pentium 3 processor and 1 Gig of Ram. I have 100 gig hard drive of which about 50 gigs are full of all types of files, avi, mpeg, jpeg, audio files, program files, you name it!
2) I have downloaded all of the latest Windows XP updates.
3) My computer starts fine and opens to the standard desktop fairly easily and quickly.
3) I then click on explorer.exe icon on my desk top and Window Explorer opens.
I have dem 8250 dell pent 4 2.4 ghz 512 ram its running very very slow... when turned on takes a while to load up and its very slow on my programs as well as the internet .........ive tried the spy ware, adaware, virus scans but none of that is helping ....

One of the other problems I have is my computer takes forever to start up when I turn it on. There doesnt seem to be anything out of the ordinary in the start up under msconfig I even stopped a few things like AOL and Nav from starting on start up.. seems to be taking even longer since doing that.
When I open programs they are slow to respond. I click on the icon but it seems to take for ever to open up but I don't know why.They use to open up fairly quickly before and nothing has changed.

In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

I am having problems starting my PC. Each time I boot up, the PC is very slow and it can take up to 10 minutes to see desktop icons on the screen. At first, it displays the Windows Welcome page, and this is displayed for about 3 minutes. Eventually, the desktop is displayed with the background picture,
the cursor is also there, but there are no shortcuts/icons are on the screen.
Last week i turned my computer on and windows xp took so much longer to boot up. when the windows xp loading screen (with the blue progress bar) appears, its there for a few minutes, it used to be a few seconds. I scanned for viruses with Norton, scanned for spyware etc with Ad-Aware and Microsoft's Anti spyware, everything is all clean. All programs are up to date in definitions too. I cleaned my registry(registry mechanic), defragged my drives, done disc cleans, i have 2 programs in my start-up (norton and mcafee firewall) and still no joy. I have also used winxp manager and tried optimizing and xp still takes a long time to load.
View 14 Replies View Relatedhave a odd issue with xp pro, running sp2.it boots fine, doesn't complain of any issues, no spyware or viruses running.It makes any difference im running NIS.If i am at a blank desktop (no programs open) you can do a ALT+F4 to bring up the log off,shutdown,reboot menu or click on the start button click on turn off the computer. the time it takes to bring up that menu is over 2 minutes. if i hit ctrl+alt+del and shutdown from there it instantly shuts down.if i wait for the menu to appear and then hit shutdown or reboot it also works fine. It just takes an exceeding long time to do such.I also have had the task manager open when i do this to check CPU usage and such none of the TSR's or services go above 3 in CPU
usage.Anyone else having issue?
also tried a SFC /SCANNOW to check and it came up with no errors.
This only does this when i upgrade to sp2.
Alright, so I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop that runs Windows XP. It's a rather old computer, a few years old, but when I got it the specs were on the high end. Not top notch, par se, but certainly good. Now, however, I have a problem with it: It is agonizingly slow (I should, perhaps, also point out that it wasn't nearly this slow when I first got it...).
