My computer is very fast, intel q8300 etc... and used to load very quick. But after the windows update that installed internet explorer 8, the icons and start menu take at least 5 min to load, if they do at all(sometimes they don't even load at all). There is no internet explorer 8 to uninstall

My Taskbar and Icons take a long time to appear on the desktop. This started a couple of days ago, but I have since restored the system back to well before this problem started with no luck. I have run AVG and Stinger anti virus scans, as well as MS anti-spyware, Spybot, Adaware, Bazooka, SpywareBlaster, and RegScrubXP, but no help. When my desktop appears, I notice under Processes in Task Manager, that only about half of the 40 or so processes have started. Then after a minute or longer the rest of the processes load. This may be normal, I don't know. Could the processes loading sequence have changed, causing the Taskbar and Icons to load at a later time? Also listed among the processes is Isass.exe which has a scary ring to it. I'll have to Google that one.

I'm running Windows XP professional and when I change my desktop icons (my computer, my documents, my network places, recycle bin full and & empty) they revert back to the default settings when I restart my system. This doesn't effect my wallpaper, start menu settings or personalized colors, only the icons. The file that I'm using is an *.ico file which I know works fine. (I've used this file when I was still using windows 98.) I've also tried making a "theme" with the saved settings and that doesn't seem to work either. I'm wondering if it's some simple setting that I'm over looking. Something stupid like "Restore default icons on restart"...I'd rather not edit my registry if I don't have to.

Currently using XP Pro, SP2 with P4 3.2, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD (90% free). While using explorer to open a folder and display the files in it, the illustrator (ai) files (hundreds of it in one folder) were shown with the generic/windows system icons first and gradually been transform to the Illustrator files icon. The process took so long and made a system in hold/freeze. It happens as well when tried open files using File Open in Adobe Illustrator or Design in the very same folder and files. I've tried solve it using Display Appearance Effect as well as using regedit to modify the value on Max Cached Icons in registry but didn't work.

1. My desktop remains blank without any icons.
2. clt+alt+del shows all choices except task manager - so I am allowed to reboot and shutdown
3. When I enter in safe mode cannot see desktop nor icons
4. Ran Norton Antivirus 2007 boot with CD - no virus found
5.Prior to crash desktop went RED, hence I rebooted and then the issues.

When I booted up my computer this morning, Windows loaded, I signed in, and then it took nearly an hour and a half to get the program icons to come up on the desktop. When I try to open one, it can take upwards of 20 minutes to do so, then response within the program is no better. It seems like all the resources are under use, but no one can see what's bogging it down.

i just bought this new computer for 1 of the staff and i have configured his profile. but then i tried to browse the internet and found it very slow, not in opening the IE, but in loading the pages. it takes around 20 to 30 seconds to load a page. when i use ping to check the connectivity, it takes a long time to display the first line, but it gives me a 1ms when pinging the server, which is good.
now i login with the administrator account and find the internet browsing is fast, but again the ping takes a while to display the first line. i did give that user Administrator permissions and tried again, but it's the same issue. i thought it would be higher permissions which could affect the user. So, i added the user to "domain admins", "administrators" groups, and i tried again, but the same situation

Since a couple of weeks my PC (w. Win XP Pro) takes approx. 5 minutes before the desktop icons appear on the screen on startup. Everything is normal from turning on the power and logging into the PC and after logging into the PC the desktop background image (wallpaper) loads immediately - but then it takes some 5 minutes before all the icons appear on the screen and before I can even get the start bar to appear. But after these 5 minutes everything pops up nicely and the PC works perfectly. To mee it seems like the PC is trying to connect somewhere and probably fail after the 5 minutes and then proceed with the other tasks. Then thing is that it doesn't seem to be much activity because the harddrive lamp only blinks occationally during these 5 minutes. Have not got any Symantec virus warnings and I have not downloaded or installed any new programs at about the time this started to appear... As everyone here seems to add a HiJackThis file - I thought I better do it too - but I don't suspect to have a virus... Anyonw have any suggestions on what might cause this slow load of the desktop icons?

Every thing runs pretty slow, Firefox takes 5+ seconds to switch tabs, Thunderbird takes almost that long to open messages, Gaim's buddy list scrolling is extremely slow, Paint Shop Pro/Gimp/Photoshop filters take almost double the time they do on my other weaker IBM (see computer specs). It's just terribly slow.

I have two computers running WinXP; the others run Win2K. When I attempt to see the file system in Explorer of one of the WinXP machines by clicking on "Computers Near Me"/Computer Name, it takes about a minute for the list of logical hard disks to appear. This is true no matter which of the other computers this one is accessed from. No other computer behaves like this. When I click on another computer name in Explorer, the list of hard disks appears almost instantaneously. Moreover, only one installation of WinXP behaves like this -- the one with a clean install of WinXP; the WinXP installation that is an upgrade of Win2K displays its logical hard disks very quickly. Once the list of logical disks appears, clicking on one entry produces a list of the folders in the root directory almost instantaneously.
