When I booted up my computer this morning, Windows loaded, I signed in, and then it took nearly an hour and a half to get the program icons to come up on the desktop. When I try to open one, it can take upwards of 20 minutes to do so, then response within the program is no better. It seems like all the resources are under use, but no one can see what's bogging it down.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.
Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).
Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.
Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.
The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.
I get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.

Yet even bringing up 'My Computer,' causes the 'search light' to try to find files (about 30 seconds later, it does).I've checked for viruses and adware and have none under AOL's system.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is new and just started a few weeks ago. Once in a while I'll doubleclick the "My Computer" icon and all 5 of my desktop icons will open their windows. I also noticed my type-ahead launcher won't respond to its hotkey when this happens. It doesn't feel like that's the problem though. The bad behavior won't stop until I reboot. The first time this happened I tried a logoff to see if that would be enough to fix it but, my machine wouldn't recognize my password. The password is recognized on restart.Restart has been my only fix so far. Does this sound like anything to anyone?

Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. Intel MOBO (915 I think), P4@3.2, 1gRam, SATA HD 15% used, Windows 2000Pro W/SP4.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard,and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was recently turning my computer on and I got an error message that says "Windows Explorer encountered a problerm and needs to close." I shut the computer off and the message keeps coming on and I have no icons or startup menu bar just the wallpaper.
I did a quick restore and still nothing, I still get the same error message and the same results.I checked the the problem on the error message; APP Name: Explorer.exe 6.02900.2180 Deskbar.dll In order for me to get on line or get my files is thru the Task Manager. I have done everything ran a virus scan, spybot, adware and everytime I turn on the computer on I get the same error message. I am stairring at a wallpaper with no icons or startup bar.
Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs will not load. It just keeps searching and searching for the "programs" and never actually shows the programs to remove.

A few of my desktop icons got deleted and sometimes I wouldnt c the start button or the computer wouldnt detect the main harddrive and various other errors. It also gave me fake anti virus ads I installed many different programs to remove it but none were successful, except Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.Now, my computer has been so unstable that I dont even feel like it's a new computer.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows XP professional and when I change my desktop icons (my computer, my documents, my network places, recycle bin full and & empty) they revert back to the default settings when I restart my system. This doesn't effect my wallpaper, start menu settings or personalized colors, only the icons. The file that I'm using is an *.ico file which I know works fine. (I've used this file when I was still using windows 98.) I've also tried making a "theme" with the saved settings and that doesn't seem to work either. I'm wondering if it's some simple setting that I'm over looking. Something stupid like "Restore default icons on restart"...I'd rather not edit my registry if I don't have to.

I try clicking icons, not clicking icons, but I still have to wait. *Also* The comp. doesn't sound as if it is loading...sometimes the hourglass cursor will appear, but the CPU never gets loud during this waiting time. When I turned it on some message came on after I put in my password, something about programs, then my screen came up with all my icons. My background pic that I had was gone, it was now Gateway, (like it reset itself), so I went into my pictures to reset it and all my Pictures, documents, etc are gone. I have no idea how to retrieve them. I did a full virus scan, and there is no viruses, etc on it, so can anyone please tell me whats going on? Another thing that I noticed is everytime I turn my laptop off, and turn it back on, everything I did as far as changing my homepage is gone as well, even all the sites I just visited,like it keeps resetting. Someone replied with a link that gave me some things to do, but none of it worked. I did system restore and it said nothing has been changed, I tried doing new user account but nothing is transferring to it.I have no idea how to retrieve these files. All the icons are there, but everything is gone from them.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on a machine where the machine boots up fine. I log into XP Pro SP2 and it starts to load but never finishes. I have a wallpaper but icons and no taskbar. The only I can open the task manager and try to start the explorer.exe process, but it never starts. It does the same thing in safe mode. I have cleaned some trojans, spyware and a ton of adaware by slaving the HDD and ran a defrag. I performed a CHKDSK /r using BARTS's PE and it fixed a few errors. I then ran a sfc /scannow. I updated all windows updates. I ran a repair on XP. I checked the startup and found nothing suspious. When I go into the add remove programs it locks up the PC.

Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?
