This is a very simple matter. I have always had an icon on my taskbar for accessing my desktop that I use quite often. Its been there so long that I can't remember if I put it there or if it came that way on the computer. Tonight, the icon had changed and when I clicked on it, I got the little flashlight and asked if I wanted to search. Grrrr. Not the end of the world but I would really like to have it back.

I can use the task manager to start a few programs,so the programs are not gone,it seems to be just the desktop.

I could then click on the 1 i wanted. it was very convenient because i didn't have to close all my windows to see the icons. My curent problem is that When I rightclick a desktop icons I only get an hour glass, the system stops responding to any thing. The only way out of it it to either log off or shut down and restart.When I open the recycle bin though it appears full on the desktop icon I could not see any item on it.If I try do delete, move this folder or any of the command on the left file/folder task pane I only get hour glass. The only way out of it is ctrl+alt+del, task manager (program not responding) end task.

I used to get the Task Manager with all the tabs - applications, processes, performance, networking, and users. Now, nothing. I don't remember changing anything that would affect this. Because of this, I can't shut down applications that screw up or ones that I want to turn off for a specific period.
View 14 Replies View Relatedno IE icon on desktop or in programs. i have internet access through verizon. i recently got windows update to install IE7 in the hope that would restore the icon/program but the only way i can access the internet is via the verizon browser. i clearly installed IE7 because now the "sidebar" of my verizon browser says that "sidebar i currently not compatible with IE7...". so why can't i get the IE7 icon in my program list or desktop?

I searched and found an answer to someone else's problem which was to exit the "normal" one and both would disappear. They did but the AVG icon is completely gone from the tray. I thought it would re-appear on its own.I can run it from the desktop icon but I'd like it back in the tray.

Just wondering why when you drag an IE http short cut to the desktop, it does not display the site logo icon. Sometimes, they will show and others not. I have had them even come and go after different sessions. I keep having a balloon that pops up saying my "computer is infected" and to use a special spyware tool to remove it. It also says "Windows will download the most up to date antispyware for me and to click on the Icon. When I click on the Icon, nothing happens. I've run "Ad-Aware SE" and still have the "Balloon". This balloon keeps popping up very often and I "x" and it disappears for a little bit and reappears. I also have another balloon that says updates are ready to be downloaded. I click on it and Windows Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard comes up to be installed. When I try to install, it says installation was unsuccessful.The "computer infected" balloon really bothers me the most and I would like to know how to correct this.

This disappeared in 2 stages; first the language bar space still showed, but it was blank. Then the empty bar also disappeared. And this morning this came up:My hard Disk Icon(The One in My Computer when you open it, showing your computer contents, your hard drive, etc) was replaced by the one that windows shows when it does not recognize a file.When I tried to fix it, it became worse. Now when I double click one of my hard drives it will now not open but goes directly to the search function for that drive.My hard disk icon or whatever it is called, and b.) When I click on ok it says would you like to update your security software and install registry cleaner? Once in a while it keeps popping up from that icon that my computer has detected spyware infection and has corrupted the registry. I went to the notification area where you can choose to place the icon on the taskbar, but it's greyed out and I can't change the gray so that I can highlight. The compaq people have me uninstall a driver and that didn't help. We selected default setting s and that didn't help. I found instructions on Microsoft.help but they work only if you've got the cd.
