No Volume Control Icon In Task Bar
Jul 20, 2007
Recently I had to use my Windows XP Pro disk to repair a problem with Windows XP Pro. Now I don't have the icon in the task bar for the volume control. I have sound, I just don't have the icon. When I go to control panel, then sound and audio devices, and then I click on the box that says put volume icon in task bar. It says the volume control program is not installed and go to add/remove to install it.Where do I find it in the add/remove section?

I am using XP Pro and up until recently when I clicked on the volume control button in the task bar on the lower right hand side of the screen, the button would open up and I could raise or lower the volume with the slider and right click on the button to get an idea of how loud the volume had been increased or decreased. After hooking up a USB turntable and installing the accompaning "AudaCity" software the only sound I can get when I click on the button is the "mute" sound even though there is no check in the "mute" box. It doesn't matter how high or low I raise the slider, the sound is the same; mute.
That really would not be a problem in as much as I am still able to play all .wmv, .wav, .mpeg, and .mp3, etc. files and the volume control button works to control the volume on all these files. The problem is that I was able to record a song from two different albums and save it to "my music" folder, but when I tried to record another song the following day the turntable would not record. I discovered it was not working because there was no sound and thinking perhaps I had muted the PC I checked the volume control button and discovered then there was no sound when I clicked the button.

I ahve been trying to get the volume icon back on my taskbar so I can raise and lower the volume. I went to the notification area where you can choose to place the icon on the taskbar, but it's greyed out and I can't change the gray so that I can highlight. The compaq people have me uninstall a driver and that didn't help. We selected default setting s and that didn't help. I found instructions on Microsoft.help but they work only if you've got the cd. My Windows XPHome ed. was preinstalled.

I cannot seem to make my sound volume icon stay in my taskbar. I have Winxp on my Gateway laptop. So far, I've unlocked the taskbar, then I went to my control panel and checked the box that said to put icon in taskbar. Then sometimes the icon would appear in the taskbar. Then I would lock the taskbar. Then the next time I rebooted, the icon was gone. Sometimes the icon won't even appear in the taskbar when I put the little check mark where it belongs in the control panel.

I can't get my volume icon to appear on the task bar, although I have created a short cut to sndvol32.exe, and that will control my volume. In addition, going to the control panel, Sound and Audio Devices will not cause it to appear on the task bar. This is a difficult problem that I have worked on for months One source suggested conducting a repair reinstall of the Windows XP Media Center Edition software. I have made some registry edits previously, and this may be part of the problem.

i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of msn m. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by Internet, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m.

After looking at the display settings and closing them, my icon disappeared. A file search on all *.cpl files show that the display.cpl file still exists
and I can create a shortcut to the desktop and run the program. But, I'd like my icon back.I believe the problem was created by having all my icons underlined so I only have to do a single Left click to bring up the program.

Situation: Had MS Natural Keyboard Pro PS2 with the media keys working just fine. Problem... it's a white keyboard and all my stuff is now black or silver. Okay, get a new keyboard, MS Wireless Natural Keyboard. Uninstalled and reinstalled old/new software. ONly problem, the new keyboard can't control volume up/down. It can mute/unmute and all other special keys work.
where the link is that ties those keys in to the main volume control in registery. Here's something interesting: If I plug the old PS2 keyboard in, no drivers, XP recoginizes and all media keys work fine on it including volume. If I keep both keyboards installed simultaneously they both work fine and control everything EXCEPT the new one can't raise/lower the volume, just mute.

I click on the volume control icon, and it "opens" on the task bar, but it doesnt show up on the screen. I can close it by right clicking its 'bubble' on the taskbar, and selecting close.I just can't see it when its open, and i cant figure out why.I have tried restarting the computer, and reinstalling the sound card drivers. Can i reinstall the volume control in XP, like you can in 98?

So I try to go to my Volume Control and get this message:"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close." When I go to my Sounds And Audio Devices Properties, the tabs labled Volume, Audio, and Voice will not even highlight. The buttons that is, nothing works, they're all disabled or something.I guess I'm just having all kinds of problems with this new Windows installation.

If I use XP Pro my Logitech Elite keyboard volume control knob turns the volume up and down smoothly regardless of if I am gaming etc but when I use the keyboard in XP Media Centre the volume control becomes very jerky and virtually uncontrollable. For instance it will be at 30% but if I turn it down one notch in XP Pro it would go down to 27% but in Media Centre it go go down to 20% or even 15% or even worse no volume.I have tried uninstalling the drivers, reinstalling them and nothing seems to work.

There is no volume icon displayed in my systray. There used to be one there. When I open Sounds and Audio Devices on the Control Panel and check the Place volume icon in the taskbar I get a window that says: Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control Program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Where is the setup file. Is it a windows program or perhaps a Dell utility? XP Home SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop.

every 3-5 minutes or so, the main window that i'm working in (doesn't matter which program im running, but usually firefox/msn messenger, etc..) stops being the "top" window, and instead goes to the background - as if i opened another internet explorer window on top of it.this "glitch" is always followed by something even more strange - the sound gets cut off, and if i check the meters in volume control i always find the "wave" meter to be on minimum, and i have to put it back in the middle.

Volume on my laptop does not work. When I click on my volume control I get the infamous error message. Full message: There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close." I've tried numerous searches on google/forums but nothing seems to work. I tried the services.msc, Ive tried the "machine.inf" copy/paste method. Tried to reset the BIOS to default in the setup menu (not sure if i really did this right but.). Nothing seems to be working. The sound worked before I had to delete the partition and reinstall Windows XP. Had a virus or something so I had to delete the partition and reinstall like I said. It's Windows XP Professional.I got the laptop from Cyberpowerpc.com. Phoenix brand motherboard (i think that is a brand, Everest said the BIOS type was phoenix anyway, it says the actual motherboard name is Unkown). When I bought it, the sound said: Built-In AC97 Sound Card if that helps. I was pretty sure I had "Realtek AC 97" Audio driver before the crash but I'm not 100% sure on that.

But if I take the tick out and click apply and the put the tick back in and click apply, it reappears. However the next time I start my computer, it has disappeared again.

In the last few months my volume icon does not load in the system tray most of the time on boot up.I have it selected to show in the task bar properties and the control panel. For the life of me I can't figure out how to get this icon back. I have to bring up the Master Volume Panel to change volume settings. This is a real pain most of the time, as all I want to do is stop a web site from playing some anoying music or turn the volume back on when I need it.
