You know, the small icon that appears in your taskbar when connecting a USB device? It no longer shows up, so now I have to go to Windows Explorer and click "Eject" directly on the USB device. How can I have this icon re-appear?It's the one that let's you select your USB device to "Safely remove device".

I installed the software for a HP DeskJet 5940 photo printer that I purchased. Afterwards, a "Safely remove hardware" icon appeared in the taskbar. None of the startup entries for the new printer are running in the background, so I don't know how to get rid of it.
1. Right-click within the notification area, and then click Properties.
2. On the Taskbar tab, click Customize.
3. Select Safely remove hardware, and in the Behavior column, click Always hide.
i had attached a snapshot of the icons in my icon tray..pass few days back i found this "X" icon in my tray and i cant remove it and also it doesnt display anything..
I have a feeling that this is simply a case of some registry settings which need adding/modifying/deleting but exactly which ones and what values I do not know. No, I haven't tried re-installing XP.
The system seems to be very stable at this point in time. I run Norton Utilities and other maintenance sw as well as have a firewall/pest remover/anti-virus. Behavior - most things work fine on the USB ports, either the hub or direct connects. One digital camera will only work when direct connected(not thru the hub). I have a scanner that will only work on a 2003 Compaq Presario, but not on the whitebox on any port. Also, I have had two devices that won't work at all. I have noticed that the USB mass storage device icon doesn't seem to be present now when I attach a flash drive. This is recent behavior and doesn't predate every USB problem.
Insert any USB device to this computer, Computer keeps restarting and it wont stop doing that until I remove the usb device. I tried with all the usb ports on this computer and problem is the same. Even by hooking up a usb keyboard or mouse, computer wont get to the login screen. it keeps on restarting. It wont even go into 'safe mode'.Anyone have any clue whats going on and the solution to fix it?
I have a problem that came to light when I was trying to reinstall my HP 1200 series printer, namely that there is nothing at all in the Device Manager. Everything apart from printers is working fine.

Device manager says usb's are ok and programs are still on system but dont appear to have any 'plug and play' automation and usb's not recognising cables have tried to repair from xp disc but not working. Can anyone help with this?
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and have noticed this sqlservr.exe process running in the task manager but have no idea why it's there and what it's for. I don't use the Sequel Server program on my computer. Could it be used for another application that I installed?
I just connected a new computer that has Windows XP. But the task bar at the bottom of the desktop is not showing. So I can not get to the window to shut down or restart. control panel, all programs, etc. Can you help me find that task bar
Ive been having problems with my desktop computer. If you open up any program, the CPU usage immeaditely goes from like 0 to 100% and occassionally it will shut down and restart. Such times are when I try to run ad-aware or AVG. It will shoot up to 100%, maybe run for a minute then restart the computer. I cant even delete some files because it just restarts before they delete. So, I tried to do a restore since the last time ive been home when it was working good, about a month ago and it did nothing.
Well I reinstalled XP SP2 then after working for awhile i noticed my sound was not functioning. The icon was not showing up on the toolbar currently running programs( which it usually does ). Then went into ADDRomove programs to uninstall. I recieved an error " The RPC server is unavailable ". I then saw that sound devices in Properties said it was not working properly, well after everything I thought a SYSTEM REPAIR would work that didn't work eighter. Then i saw in MSCONFIG there was one Service that was unchecked DCOM server process, this service would stay that way evertime i restarted. So I then reinstalled the sound software from a CD. In installation the error code 110, RPC "server unavailable or has been corrupted".
I'm not sure how it happened, but all my files that I have set to open with Windows Picture and Fax viewer all display the "missing icon" icon. The one with the picture of a Windows 95 window on a white page. I figure the normal icon for pictures got deleted somehow, but I'd like to fix this without re-installing Windows if possible
My cd rom has disappeared from my computer. Icon is gone as well as Device manager. I tried deleting the upper and lower filters as told in other discussions- but the right hand window pane under registry is blank. I tried to create a date to try a system restore- but its like the calender is frozen.
Whenever I "safely disconnect" any USB device (mainly a memory stick or mp3) the icon in the taskbar just disappears, without the appearance of the notification that actually tells you that you can safely remove the device. How can I recover this notification?.
I have Windows XP on my computer. I have a dictionary icon on my desktop. But I cant seem to drag that icon to the left side of my taskbar. When I drag it down it springs back up. How could i put it on my taskbar?
On my taskbar, just to the right of the green start button I have two icons (IE and Outlook) and I used to have an icon for the desktop. Somehow the desktop icon (which would minimize all open programs and show the desktop) has disapeared. Does anyone know how to add it back to the task bar?
I have Windows XP and I think I may have a problem. In my task bar I have aan icon that is a red sphere with a "X"n it. I keep having a balloon that pops up saying my "computer is infected" and to use a special spyware tool to remove it. It also says "Windows will download the most up to date antispyware for me and to click on the Icon. When I click on the Icon, nothing happens. I've run "Ad-Aware SE" and still have the "Balloon". This balloon keeps popping up very often and I "x" and it disappears for a little bit and reappears. I also have another balloon that says updates are ready to be downloaded. I click on it and Windows Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard comes up to be installed. When I try to install, it says installation was unsuccessful. The "computer infected" balloon really bothers me the most and I would like to know how to correct this.
When I turn my computer on it opens in my documents. I have no desktop icons and no start menu. The only thing I see is my desktops background picture. When it opens in my documents, I can click on my desktop and the items are in there, so I can access the internet that way. When I shut down the computer, I hit ctrl+alt+del, and shut it down or restart it from there.
I installed the driver for my optical wheel mouse. Now,a little icon appears of a mouse on taskbar next to clock with all the other little icons, which are hidden. Can I get rid of these little icons somehow.I want rid of them, not hide them.lol
I have Windows XP on my computer. And I have a monitor with built-in speakers. Can any one tell me how to put an icon on my taskbar which will allow me to make the sound louder or lower? Also, should I keep the sound turned off on my monitor?
I share my Internet connection with my son. I'd like to have the Taskbar on his computer show the Local Area Connection icon ( the two little monitors side by side ) the same as mine does, but I've forgotten how to do that.
My son was downloading something on the computer last night and he said all these pop ups came up and now on the task bar there is an icon , a shield with a x in the center that says your computer is infected. When I click on ok it says would you like to update your security software and install registry cleaner? Once in a while it keeps popping up from that icon that my computer has detected spyware infection and has corrupted the registry. Virus program shows nothing, well it showed threat of bloodhound and said it cleaned it but that is it. How do I get this off my taskbar and how do I get all the icons off that I dont want to run.
I lost the printer icon on my taskbar for an Epson ,anyone know how to get it back? Using Windows XP,haven't seen an error message Dell tech(??) suggested reinstalling software, which didn't help. The icon is still missing in action,it was there a few days ago.
I have no idea how this happened, but there's a new icon on the far right side of my taskbar that blinks (red shield with x to blue shield with question mark) . Every once in awhile a balloon will pop with some "system alert" garbage. Right click, left click, it doesn't matter, it takes you to the virusheat.com website. How do I remove this from my taskbar?I was going to email this virusheat company but figured I'd be in for more spam if I did.
Every time I start my computer, I have to go to the control panel and go to sound settings to put the volume control icon in the taskbar next to the clock. It use to load automatically but quit. How can I get the volume control icon to stay in the taskbar without having to go to the control panel to add it each time I start my computer?
