Reinstalled XP SP2 Working For Awhile Sound Not Functioning / Icon Not Showing Up On Toolbar
Sep 7, 2005
Well I reinstalled XP SP2 then after working for awhile i noticed my sound was not functioning. The icon was not showing up on the toolbar currently running programs( which it usually does ). Then went into ADDRomove programs to uninstall. I recieved an error " The RPC server is unavailable ". I then saw that sound devices in Properties said it was not working properly, well after everything I thought a SYSTEM REPAIR would work that didn't work eighter. Then i saw in MSCONFIG there was one Service that was unchecked DCOM server process, this service would stay that way evertime i restarted. So I then reinstalled the sound software from a CD. In installation the error code 110, RPC "server unavailable or has been corrupted".

We just got a new PC, monitor, and OS. Had win98se, now have XP pro. On IE when we made Yahoo our browser, the toolbar words and toolbar icon pics look much smaller than before and that is a prob for my husband who is legally blind. I have already increased the size of the icons on the desktop and also in the start menu list, but have no idea what to do to increase size of the items on the IE/Yahoo.com tool bars at top of page ie: File, Edit, View, etc. And also the back/forward/refresh/stop/ and home icons up there.

My friend's computer was really messed up last week, and the only way to fix it was to reinstall XP. Once I did so, the monitor and sound did not work right. After messing around, I got the monitor corrected (the computer could not find the drivers) but there still is no sound. The sound card is on the motherboard itself (not removable), but the computer does not see anything but a generic sound card. How can I fix this? Do I open the computer up and try to find the specs on the motherboard, or is there another way? Plus, I don't have access to the computer for a couple days, so I can't tell you what all the specs are.

I have recently reinstalled windows and since then i havent been able to get any sound except the warning beeps from the computer itself. my speakers dont work. The error message, 'There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to Control Panel, click Printer and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware' pops up everytime I try to open the Volume Control.I have tried downloading various drivers which many people have suggested bute when I try this message pops up:'Microsoft QFE Update (835221)
This is only to be used on HP Consumer PCs preinstalled with Windows XP. Your PC does not meet this requirement, so update is being aborted. but my PC was preinstalled with Windows i've just had to reinstall it again!

I recently formated my hard drive and reinstalled XP operating system. I no longer have sound on my computer. When I go to control panel- sounds it says no driver found. I have a Unimodem Half Duplex Audio Device. I tried reinstalling the driver from the cd and the control panel still shows no driver installed. One time I tried using the resource cd and the sounds worked in both speakers.

I just did a fresh install of XP on my new PC and now, for some reason there is no sound coming out of the speakers. It worked before I did the reinstall. The digital sound is built into the Gigabyte mobo and I made sure I reloaded the drivers. Everything looks okay in the Device Manager. I've looked at everything I can think of, but I can't get the sound to work. When I plug in my USB headphones, they work fine. I keep thinking it's something simple I'm missing.

I reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 3000 and now the Internet is not working. Some background-- the installation disk I used came with a different model Dell computer that I no longer have. I didn't have an XP disk or any driver disks for the Dell Dimension 3000. I went and installed the following two drivers on the computer (which I downloaded to a disk from Dell's website on another computer) based on suggestions from other forums but it's still not working: the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility and the Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection. When I go to device manager, under other devices there are yellow question marks next to "Ethernet Controller" and "Multimedia Audio Controller." Note that my internet connection is a cable connection and the motorola modem is hooked up to a belkin 54g router. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem so I can get back on the Internet?

Everthing's working fine now from what I can tell, except sound. the troublshooting provided by windows so far hasn't turned up anything and the updating from windows' site hasn't helped either. my control panel says that only my usb device is being read although the speaker system is hooked up exactly as before.

After a while my sound will cut out and when I try to play things in Winamp or anything it will stay stuck @ 0:00The sounds will sputter for a second and then freeze. Also when the sound dies, sometimes programs will start to freeze up to the point I can't even kill them in tskmgr. System sounds don't play either.I've tried updating to the latest drivers. I tried an older version of the drivers too.

Running XP in older HP. Installed new HDD. My recovery discs would not work was told to get new ones. Got the Discs with correct BID but having problems installing. My cd-rom has been on the fritz for awhile. We only use this pc as a backup and because we like XP so we use the multimedia drive. The rom drive will not open with the button but will with a paperclip. I was told the recovery discs have to be run on the cd-rom drive only and using a paperclip doesn't let the drive set properly to read the discs. When I first tried the recovery it seemed to start ok, says starting recovery but then runs and run, no messages, no noise from pc. I don't mind replacing the drive if that is the problem. Also, the part# from the drive I took out is different then the part# on HP list. I have found both and from what I can gather, both will work. The only difference I can find on the description is one list device jumpers on the rear panel features. I have no idea what that means. For the record, the recovery disc set is supposed to format and partition the drive then start recovery.

I'm not sure how it happened, but all my files that I have set to open with Windows Picture and Fax viewer all display the "missing icon" icon. The one with the picture of a Windows 95 window on a white page. I figure the normal icon for pictures got deleted somehow, but I'd like to fix this without re-installing Windows if possible

I'm not sure if this should be in the Windows XP forum or the software forum, so please excuse me if I chose the wrong one.I've been having this problem for awhile now, and it isn't urgent but quite irritating. For some time now, my volume icon has refused to appear in my taskbar. Every time that I want to change the settings I have to use START -> RUN -> sndvol32.exe, I have tried going into Control Panel -> Sound and setting it so that the volume control will appear in the taskbar when windows starts, but for some reason this setting is wiped when I restart the computer. (I'm not sure if its actually control panel -> sound b/c I'm on a campus CPU right now so I can't check it, but I'm sure you know what I mean... if not I'll repost later when at home)
If anyone has any ideas, please don't hesitate to throw them up here. I am clueless and this is really pissing me off now
