My control panel has changed from a page full of icons to a long dropdown strip of small icons with there lables.There is no obivous way in to alter anything.

What on God's green earth is this? I have two network connections icons in my control panel. When I hover over them a tool tip(the little yellow box), each one says something different. One says "connects to other computers, networks and the Internet" and the other one says"configures network software". When I click on each one, they both go to the same Network Connections location with connections. What is the deal? Have I done something wrong? My computer is fine and everything, it just bugs me a little. I can deal with it if I have to.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have four desktop icons that will not die. The exact method of creation escapes me, but I think it happened thus: As Administrator, Open Control Panel, start TweakUI. In TweakUI, go to Desktop, select Printers/Faxes and Start Menu, then Control Panel and click "Create as File." Fonts, Scheduled Tasks and Administrative Tools may have also been created as files. Anyway, the last four icons now appear on all user desktops and cannot be deleted. Their properties are the same as the Control Panel *.cpl files'. They do not appear in a command box "DIR" of any user. They did turn up in one Nethood folder and could not be deleted there. The container wasn't deletable either. The "Control Panel" file was deletable and both the check-box items went away when unchecked. Norton Windoctor 2005 reports "no problems found."

It can take anywhere from 10-40 seconds to do this. My drive is 40% free.
When my wife boots up her PC, her desktop icons take a very long time to appear.i have applied only a few important programs to run in the startup. The computer is scanned every day with AVG 7.5 Internet Security for viruses and spyware. I have used Spybot and Windows Defender which all have given negitive results.I have also defragged the disk drive as well.The computer is running Windows XP.
View 1 Replies View Relatedmy add -remove programs list in control panel takes a long time to compile the list. even with "show updates" unchecked. there are a couple that wont remove, games that my son installed and free trial ran out. one list under "start-programs" and the uninstall button leads to the documents folder, and "remove" says some file is missing. it still has a file in program files also.

Ever since then the icons of all files on CD/DVD is changed to HTM ones:It does not happen in other folders or flash drives; only CDs/DVDs, any CDs/DVDs. I'm at my wits end as to how to resolve this. Clicking on the files however launches the appropriate application associated with the particular file type.

As i start up my computer i become stuck with the desktop background after the welcome screen and the desktop icons and start button arrive too late almost taking more than 8 minutes... i am sure windows has loaded and i could hear the start up sound but not the icons and taskbar which appears only after long time.i have analyzed this problem for all these weeks ..i have come up with the conclusion that its a RPC(Remote Procedure Call) which is creating this problem..i diagnosed this when i could still start up task manager when i have desktop background and i end an svchost.exe process....Suddently a shutdown screen with a time down count of 1 minute appears saying that(RPC has been unexpectedly terminated..the system is going to shut down..save ur work..blah blah) ...But then all icons starts appearing and taskbar gets loaded...i rush into run command and type "shutdown -a" and the screen closes and i continue my work..

Basically i booted my pc this morning and an error message came up for ALL of my programs stating: 'Windows cannot open this file'.To open this file, Windows needs to know which program created it.Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer.What do you want to do? Ive tried start, run, and various prompts suggested on other forums and it gives the same message WHATEVER i type in here! I can still access the net but thats about all.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Taskbar and Icons take a long time to appear on the desktop. This started a couple of days ago, but I have since restored the system back to well before this problem started with no luck. I have run AVG and Stinger anti virus scans, as well as MS anti-spyware, Spybot, Adaware, Bazooka, SpywareBlaster, and RegScrubXP, but no help. When my desktop appears, I notice under Processes in Task Manager, that only about half of the 40 or so processes have started. Then after a minute or longer the rest of the processes load. This may be normal, I don't know. Could the processes loading sequence have changed, causing the Taskbar and Icons to load at a later time? Also listed among the processes is Isass.exe which has a scary ring to it. I'll have to Google that one.

This is my Mom's computer and lord only knows how this happened, but for example, when I click start > all programs > microsoft office > word, it's icon is not the word icon, but the icon for another program on the computer. It is like this all over the place.When I click on word, it starts opening the program that is associated with the icon and not word. Any idea why this may be happening and how I can fix it? I tried right-clicking on the program > properties, but the find target button is grayed out so I can't change the program it's associated with.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI run a fairly old but trusty Dell desktop machine with Windows XP (Service Pack 3). It's been absolutely fine since I've had it and I've updated the ram some time ago. Then last night for absolutely no apparent reason, when I turned it on and it booted up it immediately looked 'different'. The task bar had changed colour and several of the icons were missing. The text was also in a slightly different font. I then got an error message which reads: 'Exception EOleSysError in module Skype.exe at 00095A71. The RPC server is unavailable.'
View 11 Replies View RelatedShutting down a game many of my desktop icons e.g. recycle bin, network environment and all the shortcut folder icons created by myself suddenly turned to square (undefined) default icons that are familiar to us from Windows 95. When I click 'My Computer' I discover that also the icon of drive C and the floppydisk 3,5 drive icon have changed to default icons. Additionally, all the standart yellow foldericons now show default icons.
Before I have occasionaly used register cleaning programmes such as the free CCleaner and the Uniblues shareware Registry Booster with no problems. I have always taken a complete backup of the Register in case something goes wrong. Also, I have understood that no change in the register takes effect unless you restart the computer. Am I wrong here?
After a quick check I notice that all the installed software function correctly. All written documents are there and they open correctly in their respective programmes. I've tried to change the icons by right clicking "properties/customise/change icon" but it doesn't work. The computer does not allow you to change the icons that vanished. When you try to change the icon, you are by default navigated to system 32 folder with shell32.dll file. I presume this is the main icon library of xp. All the pictures are present there but those that are "broken" approx. 12 of them showed at the beginning of the list cannot be used anymore, for instance the standard yellow folder icon among them. The rest of the icons (say 100 or more of them) are available..............
Recently my Windows XP HP laptop started taking exceptionally long to load the desktop Icons on bootup. Wondering if something in my registry got messed up recently. Looking for advise on how to troubleshoot this issue so I can fix the long delay in loading the desktop icons.

Currently using XP Pro, SP2 with P4 3.2, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD (90% free). While using explorer to open a folder and display the files in it, the illustrator (ai) files (hundreds of it in one folder) were shown with the generic/windows system icons first and gradually been transform to the Illustrator files icon. The process took so long and made a system in hold/freeze. It happens as well when tried open files using File Open in Adobe Illustrator or Design in the very same folder and files. I've tried solve it using Display Appearance Effect as well as using regedit to modify the value on Max Cached Icons in registry but didn't work.

I think i installed forceware 7.7 drivers before i played the gaem so i'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. BUt anyways, the desktop icons changed to the 'default' icons, the plain ones that came with windows.

You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."The date has also changed back to january 07 which I cannot change as I cannot access its settings. I corrected the Bios clock which was also wrong but this did not change the date in windows.Programs seem to run OK but some are complaning about the wrong date!
