I tried to establish clear Icons on the desktop via this path: Ctrl Panel > System Advance Tab > Check "Use drop shadows for Icon labelson the desktop" > ReBoot. This does not work. Can this be changed in the Registry and if so, how ? OS XP HOME SP 2
View 3 RepliesI have a Toshiba Tecra A8 ez8313 laptop and need to clear my system registry in dos screen.. I get to the point where i start PC with command prompts and hit enter but all that does is run a list og the loading drivers and then starts the PC in safe mode ...I cant get it to go to the C: comman prompt ...I am running XP and it will no longer accept my password ... I have been told a few differnt things to try during the start up such as pressing the page break key ..... or holding the windows key and R at the same time none of them pull up the command prompt.

Ever since then the icons of all files on CD/DVD is changed to HTM ones:It does not happen in other folders or flash drives; only CDs/DVDs, any CDs/DVDs. I'm at my wits end as to how to resolve this. Clicking on the files however launches the appropriate application associated with the particular file type.

Basically i booted my pc this morning and an error message came up for ALL of my programs stating: 'Windows cannot open this file'.To open this file, Windows needs to know which program created it.Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer.What do you want to do? View 11 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 on two separate bootable hard drives in my Dell XPS B1000r. I have my 80 GB �main� hard drive and a 40 GB �extra� hard drive. I mainly boot from my �main� 80 GB hard drive, and that�s the drive that won�t boot after I changed the drive letter.
I wanted to rename the Drive letters associated with each of these hard drives. I was able to change the �extra� hard drive using the Disk Management option. I was not able to change the letter of my �main� hard drive, because I booted from it. I used Regedit to change the boot drive letter, based on the Microsoft Help & Support article:

Im am getting STOP - c0000218 Registry file falure the registry cannon load the hive. systemroot/system32/config/security or its log or alternative. It is corrupt, absent , or not writeable. but whatever I do it I end up with the blue page with the eror message on it. I went into the bios setings and made sure that it could be bootable with cd but all in vain.
View 6 Replies View Relatedthe problem is, my mouse and keyboard are not working in that OS, so i cant do a damn thing, so luckily i have another OS installed on the second partition (which is where im writing from right now) and i was thinking, maybe i can export that key, as a reg-file and then just click on it, fixing the whole issue. Bad thinking, because i have nothing to click it with, no mouse, no keyboard! And its saved, right there on the desktop!!!So to my question, is there any way to add that key to the other OS registry from this OS, or maybe is there a way to activate the export-file at startup or something? maybe with DOS?

This is my Mom's computer and lord only knows how this happened, but for example, when I click start > all programs > microsoft office > word, it's icon is not the word icon, but the icon for another program on the computer. It is like this all over the place.When I click on word, it starts opening the program that is associated with the icon and not word. Any idea why this may be happening and how I can fix it? I tried right-clicking on the program > properties, but the find target button is grayed out so I can't change the program it's associated with.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI run a fairly old but trusty Dell desktop machine with Windows XP (Service Pack 3). It's been absolutely fine since I've had it and I've updated the ram some time ago. Then last night for absolutely no apparent reason, when I turned it on and it booted up it immediately looked 'different'. The task bar had changed colour and several of the icons were missing. The text was also in a slightly different font. I then got an error message which reads: 'Exception EOleSysError in module Skype.exe at 00095A71. The RPC server is unavailable.'
View 11 Replies View RelatedShutting down a game many of my desktop icons e.g. recycle bin, network environment and all the shortcut folder icons created by myself suddenly turned to square (undefined) default icons that are familiar to us from Windows 95. When I click 'My Computer' I discover that also the icon of drive C and the floppydisk 3,5 drive icon have changed to default icons. Additionally, all the standart yellow foldericons now show default icons.
Before I have occasionaly used register cleaning programmes such as the free CCleaner and the Uniblues shareware Registry Booster with no problems. I have always taken a complete backup of the Register in case something goes wrong. Also, I have understood that no change in the register takes effect unless you restart the computer. Am I wrong here?
After a quick check I notice that all the installed software function correctly. All written documents are there and they open correctly in their respective programmes. I've tried to change the icons by right clicking "properties/customise/change icon" but it doesn't work. The computer does not allow you to change the icons that vanished. When you try to change the icon, you are by default navigated to system 32 folder with shell32.dll file. I presume this is the main icon library of xp. All the pictures are present there but those that are "broken" approx. 12 of them showed at the beginning of the list cannot be used anymore, for instance the standard yellow folder icon among them. The rest of the icons (say 100 or more of them) are available..............
Some how last night while browsing around some Trojan or spyware got into my system.
I was able to eliminate it using both McAfee and SpywareBot. Though I noticed that I am no longer able to apply a desktop wall paper.
Every time I try I get a prompt that states: Can not find file ///F:/WINDOWS/privacy_danger/index.htm. Make sure the path or internet address incorrect.
What would I need to do in order to correct this "error" if that is even possible?

I'm running XP SP2, and my desktop icons changed after i played a game. I think i installed forceware 7.7 drivers before i played the gaem so i'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. BUt anyways, the desktop icons changed to the 'default' icons, the plain ones that came with windows.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was running CyberScrub the other day, which is a program that cleans out internet cache and deletes files beyond recovery. After it was done with the procedure, the computer restarted and chdisk began to run before my Windows XP booted up. After Windows was done doing chdisk, it started doing some wierd stuff I've never seen before.It was scrolling down with the same line but with the number increasing into the thousands. I thought maybe it was just doing a routine check but when I when my desktop came up I started to notice all kinds of wierd errors now. Here are just some examples: My taskbar disappeared and there's no way to conventionally fix it (Start doesn't come up when I press the windows key on my keyboard). My soundcard is undetectable. I can't copy and paste from and to my browsers. Can't find my RPC server. I can't move my desktop icons, etc.

Ive changed the boot up order in bios settings and still it does not read the cd it just takes me back to the same blue screen where it dumps the physical memory then starts over and over again. Do i need to delete the existing xp first?
ou can go to windows explorer and access C drive or D drive or the others but when you open My Computer-where it usually had the C:drive and the cd-rom drive etc it just shows the little flashlite lookiing for them but never finds them. Is there something I can do to get the icons back into my computer?
