I have a PC with Windows XP and for some reason, many of my program icons changed to the icon of another program. This is my Mom's computer and lord only knows how this happened, but for example, when I click start > all programs > microsoft office > word, it's icon is not the word icon, but the icon for another program on the computer. It is like this all over the place. When I click on word, it starts opening the program that is associated with the icon and not word. Any idea why this may be happening and how I can fix it? I tried right-clicking on the program > properties, but the find target button is grayed out so I can't change the program it's associated with.
XP with SP2. Start> All programs. Almost all of the program icons are now generic icons. Can I get the program icons back? Also, some of my desktop icons have become generic.
I'm running XP SP2, and my desktop icons changed after i played a game. I think i installed forceware 7.7 drivers before i played the gaem so i'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. BUt anyways, the desktop icons changed to the 'default' icons, the plain ones that came with windows.
The day I uninstalled IconPackager, this probelm comes out.. because one by one, my icons are going corrupted, they're going blank. I'll attach and image on this post so you'll see what my icons look like.First, the ".txt" and ".jpg" files are the only blank icons, and now, there's some icons on the control panel that are going blank, "Scheduled Tasks", "Printers and Faxes", "Network Connections", "Fonts", and "Administrative Tools".
I had a Windows log-on screen that listed all users. I would click on a user name to log on. All of a sudden, I now have a dialog box that requires me to type in a name
My control panel has changed from a page full of icons to a long dropdown strip of small icons with there lables. There is no obivous way in to alter anything.
i was changing through the included XP themes - only something went wrong when i swaped to the blue theme every thing has gone black apart from a few icons, i cant see any text from windows applications or anything etc so i can't change back, i don't know what is open or closed or anything.
What would cause the task bar settings to change? ie: the ability to view inactive icons disappears. Can not access the volume control. A reboot sets it back up with the ability to view inactive task bar functions through the expand task bar icon.
Some how last night while browsing around some Trojan or spyware got into my system.
I was able to eliminate it using both McAfee and SpywareBot. Though I noticed that I am no longer able to apply a desktop wall paper.
Every time I try I get a prompt that states: Can not find file ///F:/WINDOWS/privacy_danger/index.htm. Make sure the path or internet address incorrect.
What would I need to do in order to correct this "error" if that is even possible?
Secondly when all of this occurred it changed the home page I had set in IE to the following: http://ucleaner.com/main.php?wmid=60...o4OQ==&lndid=2
It is frustrating having every program automatically install to program files, including minor things like audio attachment. I know I'll end up with tons and tons of folders in program files. Beyond that, I can't access program files from the other computers on the network. Is there a good way to reorganize/move files to my C drive in a way that would be efficient and wouldn't require reinstalling every single program in a different place?
I installed XP Home clean from scratch; updated to the latest SP and patches, including WMP 11 and IE7. Ever since then the icons of all files on CD/DVD is changed to HTM ones:It does not happen in other folders or flash drives; only CDs/DVDs, any CDs/DVDs. I'm at my wits end as to how to resolve this. Clicking on the files however launches the appropriate application associated with the particular file type.
I have Win XP 2.My son was fooling around with the computer and now half the icons have changed appearance. Half are normal picture icons and half are generic white window icons. Also all the picture type icons in the start menu have changed to generic white windows icons. How can I restore or refresh to bring back my icons.
Getting quite desperate for help now as i do not have my XP cd to reinstall and my System Restore doesnt get rid of the .lnk files! Basically i booted my pc this morning and an error message came up for ALL of my programs stating: 'Windows cannot open this file'.To open this file, Windows needs to know which program created it.Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer. What do you want to do? Ive tried start, run, and various prompts suggested on other forums and it gives the same message WHATEVER i type in here! I can still access the net but thats about all.
My software in the program list eg. avg, microsoft office, logitech, icons have changed to the standard/default icon instead of the icons that come when installing these programs.
I tried to establish clear Icons on the desktop via this path: Ctrl Panel > System Advance Tab > Check "Use drop shadows for Icon labelson the desktop" > ReBoot. This does not work. Can this be changed in the Registry and if so, how ? OS XP HOME SP 2

I run a fairly old but trusty Dell desktop machine with Windows XP (Service Pack 3). It's been absolutely fine since I've had it and I've updated the ram some time ago. Then last night for absolutely no apparent reason, when I turned it on and it booted up it immediately looked 'different'. The task bar had changed colour and several of the icons were missing. The text was also in a slightly different font. I then got an error message which reads: 'Exception EOleSysError in module Skype.exe at 00095A71. The RPC server is unavailable.'
Shutting down a game many of my desktop icons e.g. recycle bin, network environment and all the shortcut folder icons created by myself suddenly turned to square (undefined) default icons that are familiar to us from Windows 95. When I click 'My Computer' I discover that also the icon of drive C and the floppydisk 3,5 drive icon have changed to default icons. Additionally, all the standart yellow foldericons now show default icons.
Before I have occasionaly used register cleaning programmes such as the free CCleaner and the Uniblues shareware Registry Booster with no problems. I have always taken a complete backup of the Register in case something goes wrong. Also, I have understood that no change in the register takes effect unless you restart the computer. Am I wrong here?
After a quick check I notice that all the installed software function correctly. All written documents are there and they open correctly in their respective programmes. I've tried to change the icons by right clicking "properties/customise/change icon" but it doesn't work. The computer does not allow you to change the icons that vanished. When you try to change the icon, you are by default navigated to system 32 folder with shell32.dll file. I presume this is the main icon library of xp. All the pictures are present there but those that are "broken" approx. 12 of them showed at the beginning of the list cannot be used anymore, for instance the standard yellow folder icon among them. The rest of the icons (say 100 or more of them) are available..............
I'm running XP Home, SP3, and I have an intermittent problem, which I think may be windows based. From time to time, when I click on an icon on the home screen, all the icons behind it will also show as having been selected (and there will be a screen message saying that it will take a long time to load <number> programs, do you want to proceed?).
Many of my application icons (exe) have changed to default blue rectangle, and other applications icons changed to unknown type (e.g. pdf icons)I have tried windows restore - that wont work.I have tried changing from 32 bit to 16 bit and back that wont work either. It has nothing to do with resolution. I am attaching a snapshot of what i mean.
I have Windows XP Home and SP2 installed. Also I have AdAware, Spybot, Search and Destroy, MacAfee virsusscan and MS AntySpyware. Yesterday and today, I noticed that several icons on my desktop changed to a generic white square. Even as I'm writing this message, two more changed. What's going on? How to stop icons from changing?
I go to appearance tab and change the size of my fonts under the desktop icons. I change the font size to 12. I click apply and it changes the fonts to 12. When I reboot, the fonts go back to the original 7 size. What do you think overrides the change.
I am using Windows XP Professional and I am unsure of what happened to my desktop. I don't recall installing anything to make it change. But now I can see the background color, before the change the icons were translucent and blended in with the red moon theme. How can I change it back? Plus I have the computer set fot adjust for best appearance.
The Hard Disk Drive Icons in the "My computer" folder changed from an XP look and feel to a Win 98 look and feel. I right clicked on the Icon but I cannot change from there. Does anyone know how to change back the icons?
I have accidentally changed the program a file opens with. It was a macro program and I went to delete it and it changed all of my files related to it, and now i can't open them. I downloaded it again but it still opened with the same program. How can i get it to open again?
Every time I boot my computer.A lot of my program window folders open up automatically.I included a screen shot of what it looks like when they open on startup. I have done the MSCONFIG thing and gone to startup.
Computer is all of a sudden very slow. When I did a computer check for information regarding software, I found that many strange software files run automatically at startup. When I checked "msconfig", I only found 24 programs starting at startup which were normal. How do I eliminate these strange files. I don't know which one of these are necessary and I don't know how to eliminate them. They appear as "unknown". One example of a startup file is "zipfldr". There are pages of other ones.
When I turn on my computer, it automatically tries to install some photo program. There are also other problems such as the computer restarting itself with no warning, and it sometimes reverts to a "blue screen of death" where my only choice is to turn off my computer manually. I'm wondering if something could have gotten past my anti-virus software.
I recently found out through my last windows upgrade that I might be using a counterfeit copy of windows. I wasn't aware of this like I'm sure many, so I read where I could purchase for 149.00 a windows upgrade tool and make my windows XP GENUINE. On line I purchased the upgrade tool. I gave microsoft 149.00 and two days later an email came with product key and took me to a sight to run software to check to see if windows was intact. It ran flawlessly and checked my windows xp and said it was complete. Congraltions menu. After a reboot a message came up that I must activate this windows program. I tried to activate it by online, following instructions, but error said my product key wasn't valid. I then called and spoke with three different activation techs that were unable to help and said I needed the CD.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a freeware program or some sort of tweak that will allow me to automatically rotate the sounds I hear during Windows XP startup. Can't for the life of me find any advice on this anywhere.I don't want a whole Desktop Theme changer I just want to hear different wav files when I fire up the computer.
hope I'm in the right place.... When I log on my home PC (Window XP with Office 2003), I'd like Outlook and Explorer to open automatically, rather than having to select them from the Start menu.
