Every time I boot my computer.A lot of my program window folders open up automatically.I included a screen shot of what it looks like when they open on startup. I have done the MSCONFIG thing and gone to startup.

I know I'll end up with tons and tons of folders in program files. Beyond that, I can't access program files from the other computers on the network. Is there a good way to reorganize/move files to my C drive in a way that would be efficient and wouldn't require reinstalling every single program in a different place?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure my question belongs in this venue and trust someone will kindly direct it elsewhere if applicable.When I convert a document to a PDF file, Windows XP Pro automatically tries to open the new PDF file with Miscrosoft Office Picture Manager. Further, when opening a PDF file from Windows Exploder (pun intended) I have to go the extra step of telling Windows to "open with" Acrobat 6.0 or it will automatically try to open with Picture Manager.

When I did a computer check for information regarding software, I found that many strange software files run automatically at startup. When I checked "msconfig", I only found 24 programs starting at startup which were normal. How do I eliminate these strange files. I don't know which one of these are necessary and I don't know how to eliminate them. They appear as "unknown". One example of a startup file is "zipfldr". There are pages of other ones.

This is my Mom's computer and lord only knows how this happened, but for example, when I click start > all programs > microsoft office > word, it's icon is not the word icon, but the icon for another program on the computer. It is like this all over the place.When I click on word, it starts opening the program that is associated with the icon and not word. Any idea why this may be happening and how I can fix it? I tried right-clicking on the program > properties, but the find target button is grayed out so I can't change the program it's associated with.

I wasn't aware of this like I'm sure many, so I read where I could purchase for 149.00 a windows upgrade tool and make my windows XP GENUINE. On line I purchased the upgrade tool. I gave microsoft 149.00 and two days later an email came with product key and took me to a sight to run software to check to see if windows was intact. It ran flawlessly and checked my windows xp and said it was complete. Congraltions menu. After a reboot a message came up that I must activate this windows program. I tried to activate it by online, following instructions, but error said my product key wasn't valid. I then called and spoke with three different activation techs that were unable to help and said I needed the CD.

Could anyone send it me again? Whatever happened to disable msinfo32.exe seems to have happened again, not sure what, but I think it's ZoneAlarm Pro cleaning out the locked DAT files.

I have Windows XP Home Edition and lately I've been getting a pop-up everytime I start up my computer that reads:To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. click ok, send an error report once, then have to do battle with this pop-up -- clicking ok and closing it at least five more times before I can finally access my desktop. Then it takes forever for IE to load. Do I have spyware on my computer again????

So I got to playing around with it, and wound up setting it to open with wordpad so I could try and delete it. When I click "OK" the program will then proceed to run and which I have to click quite a number of "Run As" dialogue box for all the background program to run. I immediately ran a scan using AVG, but in my impatience and worry over getting this infection I googled for information and found instructions at this web site. So I mistakenly tried to follow them. Unfortunately I must have made an error in there somewhere because now I?m having problems opening program files. AVG scrubbed the virus but now I cannot open program files. Either the program cannot be found or I get the ?Open With? pop up menu. I?ve tried to run the WMI diagnostic but can?t get that to work either. Is this fixable?

One of my co-workers does not have the option to choose Excel when she right clicks on text (.txt) files and selects Open With. I've already tried selecting Choose Program and navigating to excel.exe. That does not add it. Other users have the option. These text files are already formatted in a way that will open in Excel with everything in columns without going through the wizard. I don't have any problems editing the registry if that is required as long as I have detailed instructions.

This happens only in my computer - opening it from within an app, or from the drop down list of the address bar works fine. Now, 'explorer.exe' is not in the list, and also since the "always use the selected program..." option is grayed out, it doesn't help to manually navigate to explorer.exe & select it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem opening almost any program on my computer after a crash during shutdown (just after a Windows update). When I double-click the icon it looks as if it is loading and nothing ever opens. If I look in task manager ,however, firefox.exe or whatever program I tried running is running, but using 50% the CPU resources and a window never opens. Chkdsk ran after the crash and I tried sfc /scannow and it did get ie8 to open up, but it freezes with 50% of the CPU usage, according to task manager, and still does not allow browsing. Even after uninstalling and re-installing Firefox I still can't get it to open.I tried the following experiment Open Firefox, then IE8, each use 50% of CPU resources, but neither allows browsing (Firefox does not even open a window).
