I used the windows xp home edition disk to reformat my computer. i also installed the chipsets and drivers for the motherboard (hoping its done right) and i had a couple of other cds, one being 'ATI CATALYST driver suite' which i dont really know what to do with and another for a pci modem. They came with the computer but i think you need to know about how the computer works to know what to do with them. Well anyway my programs such as windows media player, outlook express, search.... etc.

I created a bit of a problem for myself. I was tryin to play Battlefield 1942 online when for some reason PkBstrB.exe wouldnt launch. So I got to playing around with it, and wound up setting it to open with wordpad so I could try and delete it. Next thing I know all my programs will only attempt to run with wordpad. not much I can do on that account now. How can I get this back to normal?
Every time I boot my computer.A lot of my program window folders open up automatically.I included a screen shot of what it looks like when they open on startup. I have done the MSCONFIG thing and gone to startup.
Few days ago I happened to come across a free anti-spyware program and install it. However it appear to be too intrusive and slow down my system and a few hours later I uninstall it.After that whenever I boot my system, there are numerous "Run As" dialogue box appear. The contents of the dialogue box are as follows: Which user account do you want to use to run this program? When I click "OK" the program will then proceed to run and which I have to click quite a number of "Run As" dialogue box for all the background program to run. If not it will struck there until I click "OK".Not only that whenever I run any software program the "Run As" dialogue box will appear and I have to click "OK" in order for the program to run. Some of the programs are affected as it cannot run properly.
I am running windows XP. While experimenting with the task bar options I caused a problem I cannot seem to fix. When I try to minimize an open program, instead of it closing and being displayed on the task bar, it closes and dissapears behind the task bar and I can no longer see it
I picked up some crappy malware called ?Windows Police? last night while I was surfing for player info for my fantasy football league. I immediately ran a scan using AVG, but in my impatience and worry over getting this infection I googled for information and found instructions at this web site. So I mistakenly tried to follow them. Unfortunately I must have made an error in there somewhere because now I?m having problems opening program files. AVG scrubbed the virus but now I cannot open program files. Either the program cannot be found or I get the ?Open With? pop up menu. I?ve tried to run the WMI diagnostic but can?t get that to work either. Is this fixable?
I am having a big issue with my windows xp. Some of the programs are fine, but the vast majority, when i try to open them, come up with an error message telling me it has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried to download certain anti virus programs but even they will not open! Very strange. Does anyone know what is going on?
How do I add a program to the Open With menu? One of my co-workers does not have the option to choose Excel when she right clicks on text (.txt) files and selects Open With. I've already tried selecting Choose Program and navigating to excel.exe. That does not add it. Other users have the option. These text files are already formatted in a way that will open in Excel with everything in columns without going through the wizard. I don't have any problems editing the registry if that is required as long as I have detailed instructions.
When I double click -or select 'open'- HDD D: I get asked "Choose a program to open this file", with a list of programs displayed. This happens only in my computer - opening it from within an app, or from the drop down list of the address bar works fine. Now, 'explorer.exe' is not in the list, and also since the "always use the selected program..." option is grayed out, it doesn't help to manually navigate to explorer.exe & select it.
Trying to install NHL 08 on my machine. 975x mobo, XP home edition, x1950 ati card, the autorun will not open and the program will not install. When i search for the install.exe and click it, I get g:install.exe not a valid win32 application.
I'm having a problem opening almost any program on my computer after a crash during shutdown (just after a Windows update). When I double-click the icon it looks as if it is loading and nothing ever opens. If I look in task manager ,however, firefox.exe or whatever program I tried running is running, but using 50% the CPU resources and a window never opens. Chkdsk ran after the crash and I tried sfc /scannow and it did get ie8 to open up, but it freezes with 50% of the CPU usage, according to task manager, and still does not allow browsing. Even after uninstalling and re-installing Firefox I still can't get it to open.I tried the following experiment Open Firefox, then IE8, each use 50% of CPU resources, but neither allows browsing (Firefox does not even open a window).
There are two excellent spyware removal apps available and they are both FREE so there is no reason to not use them regularly. The two best apps there are for removing spyware are SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU USE BOTH OF THESE APPS SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES AND VICE VERSA, YOU ARE NOT SAFE USING JUST ONE OF THEM. There is one other app that I HIGHLY recommend is for spyware prevention, SpywareBlaster. This app sets certain registry entries that prevent spyware from ever installing, it DOES NOT run in the background using any resources, you just set it and forget it. Once you have installed these three MUST HAVE apps you then need to update them and keep them up to date. I would recommend checking for updates weekly, it’s just like your antivirus app, you need to stay protected from the latest spyware out there. To update SpyBot just open the app from your start menu (use the advanced mode option) and select “search for updates” it will then show you what updates are available for download, always install all the updates. Another feature that SpyBot has is called “Immunize”, you will see an icon for it. Select the icon and under “Permanent Internet Explorer Immunity” select “Immunize” this works in the same way as SpywareBlaster in blocking new spyware. It also gives you the option of locking your hosts file against hijackers, I highly recommend using this option as well. To update Ad Aware just open it and select “Check for updates now”. For SpywareBlaster it is mostly the same, open it up and select “Check for updates” once you update this you then must select “select all” and then “Protect against checked items” so that the updates you just did take effect. Anything these apps find is spyware and should be removed, if you choose not to remove what is found then you have no one to blame if your pc crashes due to spyware or your privacy is invaded (including these companies stealing your credit card number and identity
I'm experienceing problems running the internet. Each time I try connecting tho the Net, despite changing the default homepage which has been changed to c:secure32.html I get a warning message about spyware I have also run Spybot Search and Destroy and the Lavasoft Ad-ware and removed all of the critical objects.
My PC is infected with some bad stuff and I'm not sure what to do. So far I have tried to run Spybot S&D, Registry mechanic, ewido anti-spyware, Spyware Doctor and SpywareBlaster all of these programs seize when carrying out a scan and I have no option but to close the pc down with the power button. I am pretty much at a loss as what to do next and was hoping one of you kind souls could help me. I am running xp.
My caps lock on my keyboard works in complete reverse. with the "caps lock" on all of the letters are in small caps and when it is off all of the letters are in large caps. also my shift keys do not work. With the caps lock on the periods and commas give me "larger than" and "smaller than". the only way to get a period is to go to the "numeric keyboard. also I can"t reset the cursor when I try to go back to an earlier place it highlights the words in my folders I am unable to choose only one file When I click on a file it highlights every file from the beginning of the list to the one I have chosen.
Every shortcut that I have placed on my desktop will not open the website that it is linked to. When I click the icon, it starts to open the website, but then locks & will not open. All icons will open except the ones that I have added that link to things like fantasy football sites or game sites etc. I am running windows XP on a Dell laptop.
Where does Windows store information about where which of my two monitors, where on the screen a program should be opened? I have a program that should remember where I want it to open but doesn't, and I'm trying to figure out how to reset Windows' memory of this so I can retrain it, as it were. I've already tried everything short of reinstalling. I'm assuming that this involves tinkering with the registry, and I'm quite comfortable with that have done it plenty before, just need a road map.
I have Firefox as my default browser however there are a few pages that only work properly in IE.I have a shortcut to one such page (HP Instant Support) and I'm wondering if there's a switch or some such gimmick that will force the shortcut to open the page in IE.
I recently installed Nero software for burning DVD's and aparently I gave the software permission to open all icons under Nero instead of where they opened from before. When I go to my icon folder to choose an icon, instead of seeing all of the icons I have placed, there, all I see is about 100 Nero icons.Could uninstall Nero and I suppose that would correct the problem.
My computer will boot up and sit at the desktop all day if I don't do anything. even opens an image file I have on the desktop but that's about it. If I try to start any program, the computer just reboots without any error mesage or warning. Not sure what to do here, I have ZoneAlarm, Norton, Spysweeper, AdAware, Spysweeper, and Spybot Search and Destroy and check my PC often so a virus seems unlikely but you never know I guess. I was playing an online game (World of Warcraft) when the first reboot occured and can't do anything since.
