I have Windows XP Home and SP2 installed. Also I have AdAware, Spybot, Search and Destroy, MacAfee virsusscan and MS AntySpyware. Yesterday and today, I noticed that several icons on my desktop changed to a generic white square. Even as I'm writing this message, two more changed. What's going on? How to stop icons from changing?
View 12 RepliesShutting down a game many of my desktop icons e.g. recycle bin, network environment and all the shortcut folder icons created by myself suddenly turned to square (undefined) default icons that are familiar to us from Windows 95. When I click 'My Computer' I discover that also the icon of drive C and the floppydisk 3,5 drive icon have changed to default icons. Additionally, all the standart yellow foldericons now show default icons.
Before I have occasionaly used register cleaning programmes such as the free CCleaner and the Uniblues shareware Registry Booster with no problems. I have always taken a complete backup of the Register in case something goes wrong. Also, I have understood that no change in the register takes effect unless you restart the computer. Am I wrong here?
After a quick check I notice that all the installed software function correctly. All written documents are there and they open correctly in their respective programmes. I've tried to change the icons by right clicking "properties/customise/change icon" but it doesn't work. The computer does not allow you to change the icons that vanished. When you try to change the icon, you are by default navigated to system 32 folder with shell32.dll file. I presume this is the main icon library of xp. All the pictures are present there but those that are "broken" approx. 12 of them showed at the beginning of the list cannot be used anymore, for instance the standard yellow folder icon among them. The rest of the icons (say 100 or more of them) are available..............
XP with SP2. Start> All programs. Almost all of the program icons are now generic icons.Can I get the program icons back? Also, some of my desktop icons have become generic.

After running a program called System Mechanic from Iolo technologies I discovered my computer had stopped working properly and kept telling me that files essential to the smooth running of windows had been changed. I did a system restore operation and almost everything went back to normal. The only exception is my desktop icons, and icons on the quick lanch bar. They're appearing inside white squares and not against the desktop wallpaper like they should almost as if the wallpaper has not loaded properly under the

was trying to free up HD space when my icons suddenly changed.. i uninstalled Alienguise ( DesktopX, IconPackager, Theme Manager, and WindowBlinds) then expected the desktop to change.. then with the change of the Desktop .. my icons changed as well.. i was expecting only icons of My Computer, Recycle Bin, My Docs.. I think i installed forceware 7.7 drivers before i played the gaem so i'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. BUt anyways, the desktop icons changed to the 'default' icons, the plain ones that came with windows.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI go to appearance tab and change the size of my fonts under the desktop icons. I change the font size to 12. I click apply and it changes the fonts to 12. When I reboot, the fonts go back to the original 7 size. What do you think overrides the change.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently loaded Alcohol 120% version 1.9.2 (build 1705) on my computer and selected creation of three virtual drives. While everything is working normal the virtual drive icons assigned to the virtual drives appear in the explorer view as a square with dots. Additionally now when I install a Kingston USB drive the system assigns a similar icon to it. I am running Win XP Pro with SP 2 and I have tried reloading the software but it didnt help. I also looked for all settings in the software but there are no settings for icons in the explorer view. The system is also configured with a DVD and a CDRW but their icons in the explorer view are ok
View 1 Replies View RelatedI started my computer today and all of the icons pointing to Microsoft Office files, Adobe Acrobat files, and similar files have been replaced by generic windows icons (white icon with little window in the middle) they are no longer program specific icons.Yes, I have tried TweakUI to rebuild the icons and it did nothing, I have tried increasing then decreasing the size of the icons to attempt to force windows to replace them with the correct icons and that has not worked either. I have also tried to use system restore and that did not help either.This is really making me angry and I don't understand why it happened I have searched everywhere for a solution and found nothing.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI was given a Toshiba notebook and only told it doesn't work. It will boot into XP but all of the non system icons have the same generic icon. Non of the icons work (nothing happens when you click on them). Basically can't get into anything. Trying to run system restore from Run brings up the no program associated with this file message. Safe mode is the same and Last Good Config was also the same. I tried running system restore from Safe Mode with command prompt using %systemroot%system32estore strui.exe. which brings up an empty system restore box. Although it looks like it came with a XP CD, all that I have is a restore CD. One other thing that bothers me is that about once a minute what sounds like the system fan goes on for about 10 seconds. I don't mind using the restore CD(it's not my laptop or info that will be erased), but I would like to avoid that if possible.

After a power outage i had an active desktop error page come up, i clicked the restore button but now 1/4 of my screen is wallpaper and the rest is a bit white block, I have tried to fix this problem a number of ways but it just wont change. I think I've got most of it weeded out, but I can't get my desktop to return to normal. It's always white. The wallpaper tries to load from time to time, but it always goes white. there is an Internet Explorer window kinda overlayed into the top left corner that I cannot close.

My wife like the desktop theme for the seascape, it has the ships wheel when working and for the mouse is a sea shell. Very nice. View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to create a shortcut of an email internet link onto my desktop and all I got was a small rectangular white box. Try as I might, I could not remove it. The box is adjustable and can be made to cover the entire desktop area behind the icons but over the current desktop theme. In my attempts to delete it I have ended up with a white box about an inch wide from the top to the bottom on the left side of the screen. I cannot reduce the size any further but as I said, I can drag the right margin all the way across the entire screen.

Everytime I would right click on my desktop it would bring up the options as if it was right clicking on a document in Internet explorer. So I went to view source and discovered that it was linking to C:windowsdesktop.html. I went and deleted that file. My desktop then went to a white screen that shifted to different shades of white. So I figured that some spyware program is still trying to reference that file. I dug through my registry via regedit and searched for anything that may be linking to that same C:windowsdesktop.html and I found one "PersistMoniker" and deleted the entry. Now my desktop has a sidebar, just like the ones if you were to open My Computer and on the left side of the window it has the System Tasks/Other Places/Details and their drop downs. Exactly the same thing with the exception that its now for my desktop and those options are Folder Tasks/Other Places/Details. I've taken a screenshot but have no web to upload the image too. If this is needed I can email it to whomever decides to help me Other things to note would be that if I go to Start -> Run... and type in explorer. It will just boot me back to the desktop after a flash of all my windows disappearing. Instead of launching windows explorer. There is an error message but it appears when I shut down the computer and it flashes so quickly that i cannot read it. The computer shuts down normally.

desktop was hijacked with a bright red screen that said "Your privacy is in danger" along with an insertion in top tool bar of 4 buttons that would fix this "danger. Have managed to get rid off fradulent tool bar and bright red screen. Now my desktop is all white and am not able to create any files there. Have run a number of scanners but the white screen still there. Running Windows XP with updates.

I went to the sreen to change it and selected the one he wanted . Couple this with frequent headaches, sometimes daily. This obviously isnt helped by the fact that my hobby and career are both in IT. I have tried every possible solution to alleviate the headaches. Lay off certain foods, make sure to have a balanced diet. Turn off any strong lighting around my computer screen, remove any strong colours from the desktop etc.

Ever since then the icons of all files on CD/DVD is changed to HTM ones:It does not happen in other folders or flash drives; only CDs/DVDs, any CDs/DVDs. I'm at my wits end as to how to resolve this. Clicking on the files however launches the appropriate application associated with the particular file type.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have White Box on my Desktop In Upper-Left Corner of my screen that I cannot delete or otherwise remove. I am running Windows XP, and McAfee and Ad-Aware say I have no viruses. In trying to get rid of this box I have discovered that I can expand and reduce the size of the box from the lower right hand corner, and if I drag a web page shortcut icon from my desktop over the box, the web page is displayed. When a web page is being displayed inside the box there are scroll bars on the right and bottom sides to scroll around the web page. If I click on a hyperlink within the box, my default web browser is opened to the link. At first I was using IE, and then I switched to Firefox, and it made no difference. Periodically, the web page being displayed inside the box will disapear, along with the scrolling bars, leaving behind a white box.
When there is a web page being displayed in the box I can right click on the box and I get a menu with the following options: Back, Forward, Save Background as, Set Background, Copy Background, Set as Desktop Item, Select All, Paste, Create Shortcut, Ad to Favorites, View Source, Print, Refresh, Export to Microsoft Excel, Print, Properties. Some of these items are grayed out. If I select properties, there is a "General" tab with the name of the web page, Protocol Info, Type, Connection, Address, Size, Created, Modified. There is a Certificates button at the bottom in addition to OK and Cancel buttons.
Getting quite desperate for help now as i do not have my XP cd to reinstall and my System Restore doesnt get rid of the .lnk files! Basically i booted my pc this morning and an error message came up for ALL of my programs stating: 'Windows cannot open this file'.To open this file, Windows needs to know which program created it.Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer.What do you want to do? Ive tried start, run, and various prompts suggested on other forums and it gives the same message WHATEVER i type in here! I can still access the net but thats about all.
