Mar 28, 2005I have a white pane covering my desktop icons and cannot get rid of it. It is a html fill that is showing this.

Weird, Task Pane On Desktop Problem
Feb 13, 2005theres a task pane on my desktop and i didnt even open a folder. I restart and its still in my deskstop. I attached a file showing a pic on wuts wrong with it. Can guys tell me wuts going on, cuz i dunno if this is a bug on sp2 or sumthing. Hopefully u guys experienced this too.

Jun 19, 2005I really need a help here. About two days ago I was trying to improve the speed of my system. I think I have delete an important file. My curent problem is that When I rightclick a desktop icons I only get an hour glass, the system stops responding to any thing. The only way out of it it to either log off or shut down and restart.When I open the recycle bin though it appears full on the desktop icon I could not see any item on it.If I try do delete, move this folder or any of the command on the left file/folder task pane I only get hour glass. The only way out of it is ctrl+alt+del, task manager (program not responding) end task.

Nov 8, 2006I wasn't paying attention to my downloads and unloaded some nasty spy/adware on my computer. I think I've got most of it weeded out, but I can't get my desktop to return to normal. It's always white. The wallpaper tries to load from time to time, but it always goes white. there is an Internet Explorer window kinda overlayed into the top left corner that I cannot close.

Oct 14, 2006I tried to create a shortcut of an email internet link onto my desktop and all I got was a small rectangular white box. Try as I might, I could not remove it. The box is adjustable and can be made to cover the entire desktop area behind the icons but over the current desktop theme. In my attempts to delete it I have ended up with a white box about an inch wide from the top to the bottom on the left side of the screen. I cannot reduce the size any further but as I said, I can drag the right margin all the way across the entire screen.

Dec 24, 2004I recently had some spyware that took over my desktop. Everytime I would right click on my desktop it would bring up the options as if it was right clicking on a document in Internet explorer. So I went to view source and discovered that it was linking to C:windowsdesktop.html. I went and deleted that file. My desktop then went to a white screen that shifted to different shades of white. So I figured that some spyware program is still trying to reference that file. I dug through my registry via regedit and searched for anything that may be linking to that same C:windowsdesktop.html and I found one "PersistMoniker" and deleted the entry. Now my desktop has a sidebar, just like the ones if you were to open My Computer and on the left side of the window it has the System Tasks/Other Places/Details and their drop downs. Exactly the same thing with the exception that its now for my desktop and those options are Folder Tasks/Other Places/Details. I've taken a screenshot but have no web to upload the image too. If this is needed I can email it to whomever decides to help me Other things to note would be that if I go to Start -> Run... and type in explorer. It will just boot me back to the desktop after a flash of all my windows disappearing. Instead of launching windows explorer. There is an error message but it appears when I shut down the computer and it flashes so quickly that i cannot read it. The computer shuts down normally.

Nov 18, 2007desktop was hijacked with a bright red screen that said "Your privacy is in danger" along with an insertion in top tool bar of 4 buttons that would fix this "danger. Have managed to get rid off fradulent tool bar and bright red screen. Now my desktop is all white and am not able to create any files there. Have run a number of scanners but the white screen still there. Running Windows XP with updates.

Jan 30, 2008I have White Box on my Desktop In Upper-Left Corner of my screen that I cannot delete or otherwise remove. I am running Windows XP, and McAfee and Ad-Aware say I have no viruses. In trying to get rid of this box I have discovered that I can expand and reduce the size of the box from the lower right hand corner, and if I drag a web page shortcut icon from my desktop over the box, the web page is displayed. When a web page is being displayed inside the box there are scroll bars on the right and bottom sides to scroll around the web page. If I click on a hyperlink within the box, my default web browser is opened to the link. At first I was using IE, and then I switched to Firefox, and it made no difference. Periodically, the web page being displayed inside the box will disapear, along with the scrolling bars, leaving behind a white box.
When there is a web page being displayed in the box I can right click on the box and I get a menu with the following options: Back, Forward, Save Background as, Set Background, Copy Background, Set as Desktop Item, Select All, Paste, Create Shortcut, Ad to Favorites, View Source, Print, Refresh, Export to Microsoft Excel, Print, Properties. Some of these items are grayed out. If I select properties, there is a "General" tab with the name of the web page, Protocol Info, Type, Connection, Address, Size, Created, Modified. There is a Certificates button at the bottom in addition to OK and Cancel buttons.

After running a program called System Mechanic from Iolo technologies I discovered my computer had stopped working properly and kept telling me that files essential to the smooth running of windows had been changed. I did a system restore operation and almost everything went back to normal. The only exception is my desktop icons, and icons on the quick lanch bar. They're appearing inside white squares and not against the desktop wallpaper like they should almost as if the wallpaper has not loaded properly under the

Explorer Left Pane Did Not Expand?
Apr 20, 2008I clicked on Windows Explorer and it opened but the left pane did not expand and there was not even a + sign if front of the C: drive to expand it. My shortcut path to Explorer is and has been: %SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n,/e,C: and I have it open maximized. It was working just fine about supper time and then I went to do other things and when I came back I had the problem. I have not installed any software nor made any system changes.

When I run the mouse over the directory-tree I can see that the tree items become highlighted with an underline. By single-clicking on a directory item in the tree that item is expanded in the left pane (so the subdirectories are shown), and the contents are displayed in the right hand pane.
Is it possible to stop the subdirectory expansion in the left hand pane?
I just want to select the directory there, not see a list of all the subdirectories with a single click. On the other hand, with a double-click I would like the expansion of subdirectories to occur. Is this at all possible
in XP?
Program Files - Gray Pane Hidden Folders
Feb 5, 2008In windows explorer when you click the folder Program Files the right side pane is gray due to hidden files. There's an option in that pane which says "show files", I clicked that and it displayed the hidden folders. How do I restore it as it was before? I tried tools>folder>view and ticked "do not show hidden files and folders" but it still shows the folders.
