Customize Open Dialog Box / Look In Pane
Aug 3, 2005When you click File, Open, in a Windows program like FrontPage, Word or Excel, you see 5 icons for My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Documents, My Computer, and My Network places. Is there a way to customize the Look in pane and remove or add any locations here? I would like to add the My Webs folder to this pane.

Sep 9, 2005On XP Pro I used to have it set up so that when I opened or saved a file(regardless of the program being used) it would show the folder list on the left side of the open/save file window (like in Windows Explorer when you do a folder list in the left pane). Now, it only shows certain groupings like My Documents, My Computer, My Network, etc. in the left pane. How do I get folders back?

Apr 4, 2007My daughter's eMachines PC has XP. She was moving some photos from one folder to another. Now they won't preview or open. The thumbnail images do not show up either.In Properties they do not say "Read Only" or "Hidden" and it will not let me alter anything. It will say "Error Applying Attributes"-"Access is denied".I asked her what happened and she said she was prompted if she wanted to move these "Read Only" files and she clicked "Yes" because she said it has asked her before on some.It lists the titles and the size of the files. The other photos in the folder show their previews and thumbnails, but these just show the generic JEPG icon.

Aug 12, 2002In WinXP, there are certain default right click menu associations on some file types, such as images, audio, video, etc. These can often interfere with your chosen default apps for handling these file types (such as ACDSee or others). Images are a prime example -- no matter what other app you install for manipulating images, the "Preview" option is always the default, which goes and runs the Windows Image and Fax Viewer. I finally found the solution to this.Any entry in the ContextMenuHandler key will override whatever you try and do, there's no easy way of telling it you want a different default option. This leaves us with deleting these keys as a final solution.As always, back up your registery before doing any changes.

Apr 20, 2008I clicked on Windows Explorer and it opened but the left pane did not expand and there was not even a + sign if front of the C: drive to expand it. My shortcut path to Explorer is and has been: %SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n,/e,C: and I have it open maximized. It was working just fine about supper time and then I went to do other things and when I came back I had the problem. I have not installed any software nor made any system changes.

Aug 4, 2005in windows xp professional's explorer the left pane shows the directory-tree structure, and the right pane shows the files in the selected directory.
When I run the mouse over the directory-tree I can see that the tree items become highlighted with an underline. By single-clicking on a directory item in the tree that item is expanded in the left pane (so the subdirectories are shown), and the contents are displayed in the right hand pane.
Is it possible to stop the subdirectory expansion in the left hand pane?
I just want to select the directory there, not see a list of all the subdirectories with a single click. On the other hand, with a double-click I would like the expansion of subdirectories to occur. Is this at all possible
in XP?
Program Files - Gray Pane Hidden Folders
Feb 5, 2008In windows explorer when you click the folder Program Files the right side pane is gray due to hidden files. There's an option in that pane which says "show files", I clicked that and it displayed the hidden folders. How do I restore it as it was before? I tried tools>folder>view and ticked "do not show hidden files and folders" but it still shows the folders.

Jun 19, 2005I really need a help here. About two days ago I was trying to improve the speed of my system. I think I have delete an important file. My curent problem is that When I rightclick a desktop icons I only get an hour glass, the system stops responding to any thing. The only way out of it it to either log off or shut down and restart.When I open the recycle bin though it appears full on the desktop icon I could not see any item on it.If I try do delete, move this folder or any of the command on the left file/folder task pane I only get hour glass. The only way out of it is ctrl+alt+del, task manager (program not responding) end task.

Aug 12, 2010i've had problems with my computer background for months -.- and it's really getting on my nerves. i'd like to find a solution to my problem.. when i right click my desktop, click properties, click desktop.. and browse and find the photo i want to set, it looks fine in the preview but when i apply it, half of it is off the screen in the corner. i tried changing it to stretch, center, tile, i re sized the image to my exact desktop size, i also tried different resolutions and still no change! please if someone can help.. i've googled this Many Many times but none of the solutions worked for me, i've also tried multiple images... May 5, 2010I tried to connect to BT Yahoo Broadband yesterday (it had been working fine), when I got "sorry, the attempt to sign in failed", after pressing the help button the next message read "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. C: Program Files Yahoo Browser Ybrowser.exe. A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program`s internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated"I can connect to BT Yahoo wirelessly using my laptop, but not on my desktop PC.I tried using system restore and tried about 6 different restore points going back a month or more, but every time got the reply that the system could not be restored to that date.
