Upon opening windows explorer by clicking My Computer from the Start Menu, I see all of the drive icons but no detailed information in the left pane. It was there once but I don't know when it went away. I have searched all of the menu view tabs but I am having no luck restoring it. WinXP Pro SP2 pre-installed from OEM.
View 6 RepliesI clicked on Windows Explorer and it opened but the left pane did not expand and there was not even a + sign if front of the C: drive to expand it. My shortcut path to Explorer is and has been: %SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n,/e,C: and I have it open maximized. It was working just fine about supper time and then I went to do other things and when I came back I had the problem. I have not installed any software nor made any system changes.

View 14 Replies View RelatedUntil recently Windows Explorer has shown the title of a CD inserted into either the CD Rewriter or the DVD reader drive on my PC. Since about two weeks ago, XP does not react at all to the insertion of a disk until I click on the relevant drive letter in the left pane of Explorer. It then shows the content of the disk but still does not show the disk title info. In addition Autorun no longer operates even though it is enabled.

When I run the mouse over the directory-tree I can see that the tree items become highlighted with an underline. By single-clicking on a directory item in the tree that item is expanded in the left pane (so the subdirectories are shown), and the contents are displayed in the right hand pane.
Is it possible to stop the subdirectory expansion in the left hand pane?
I just want to select the directory there, not see a list of all the subdirectories with a single click. On the other hand, with a double-click I would like the expansion of subdirectories to occur. Is this at all possible
in XP?
On XP Pro I used to have it set up so that when I opened or saved a file(regardless of the program being used) it would show the folder list on the left side of the open/save file window (like in Windows Explorer when you do a folder list in the left pane). Now, it only shows certain groupings like My Documents, My Computer, My Network, etc. in the left pane. How do I get folders back?

My curent problem is that When I rightclick a desktop icons I only get an hour glass, the system stops responding to any thing. The only way out of it it to either log off or shut down and restart.When I open the recycle bin though it appears full on the desktop icon I could not see any item on it.If I try do delete, move this folder or any of the command on the left file/folder task pane I only get hour glass. The only way out of it is ctrl+alt+del, task manager (program not responding) end task.

After several tech discussions with Dell, the computer now just shuts down on its own when I leave it unattended for any length of time. Dell asked me to uninstall/reinstall Windows XP. i have managed to lose the tabs under my appearance settings. The only one available are screen saver and resolution. Can anyone help with this. I think i managed to get a virus, i have since cleaned everything up, but still unable to retrieve a desktop.

At some point recently her teenage boys took it upon themselves to install a 2nd hard drive that they found in another Emachines that no longer worked. Shortly thereafter the standby button became greyed out and that function no longer worked. Then we could not get the computer to recognize or install the printer. I was able to remove it Ad-Aware SE, but once i was working with the computer again, I found that the tabs under "display properties" were missing. They included "Themes", "Desktop" and "Appearances". I already tried reinstalling XP and carefully reinstalling the ATI drivers, but i still only see the "screen saver" and "settings" tabs.

I picked up a virus and I had some other issues for a little while. I noticed when it started to infect and I pulled my internet cord in case it was going to try to get at any of my personal data. I ran my Norton 360 right away and after about an hour of running the scans and deleting some stuff, my comp started to work a lot better, but now I seem to be missing the tabs where you would change wallpaper and screen saver settings. There might be more, but I'm a casual computer user and I don't remember what the others might be Well looking at my norton history there were a few viruses:

Bloodhound.sonar.1
and one named simply downloader
Right now the comp seems to be working OK and all scans come back clear, so it's just the tabs as far as I know.
Windows XP Home SP1. The only tab that shows on Display Properties is Themes. Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings are missing. Both with the onboard Intel vide chipset and with an ATI PCI card plugged in for troubleshooting. I remember something like this several years ago, but can not find anything in newsgroup or Microsoft searches.

As the result some of the Display Properties' Tab are missing (themes, desktop, appearance). I've copied new desk.cpl file but it doesn't fix the problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedDisplay Properties, it's missing all the tabs. It always opens into the same window (I think either the Themes or the Appearance tab/window). Then I found out he still has his tabs and that you can access them with the keybaord (hitting Tab until the tabs are selected, then using the arrow keys to navigate from tab to tab), the tabs are just too small to be seen or to be accessed with a mouse. I don't think this is caused by a virus or spyware because I did a virus check and ran tons of anti-spyware software (Adaware, Spybot, Ashampoo, AVG antispyware, Windows Defender, Trendmicro) and it hardly found anything. I also don't think there's anything wrong with the registry because I ran Ccleaner. I just recently ran sfc /scannow from the command prompt and that did nothing either.
I noticed that when I have Display Properties open and I change to a certain theme and click Apply, then all the tabs will suddenly appear. I'll hit OK, which will close Display Properties, and I'll think the problem is solved. Then when I open Display Properties again, it has no tabs again. I'll change the theme again, click Apply, and suddenly the tabs are visible. But once again, they'll only be visible for as long as I have Display Properties open. When I close it and open it agian, the tabs are gone again. I think I'm onto something here and that I'm so close to resolving this.
But now, just relizing this, my "Desktop" tab is missing from my Display Properties. I am running XP SP2I have entered "gpedit.msc" after i clicked run from the start menu, i just get an error. It has done this before, like it stalled on start up and I would just restart it and it would finish booting but that isn't working. I'm using XP Professional...
I installed a software last night on my computer to allow me to transfer images and stuff to my cell phone (motorolla product). When I was installing it a box or something appeared saying it was suddenly missing files and it wanted me to put in the Service pack 2 disk - which I didn't have. My only guess is that is what caused this problem. I have not saved anything yet (was going to do that tomarrow on my only day off)
Running Win XP Pro on a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with 512MB of DDR 2700 RAM.When I right-click on the desktop to make any changes (like wallpaper, or screensaver) all I get is the Display Properties box with no tabs.The sheet displayed is Themes. The selected theme is Windows XP.If I change the theme and click Apply, the tabs all appear.
