Out of the blue, my computer started getting slow. Sometimes its ok, and then it will be on the verge of freezing.. then get itself back together. I realized, when I start up, it takes FOREVER. It also shows this screen I have never seen before. Its completely black, and has a line of grey rectangles from side to side. and slowly loads across. When it is finally finished 10-15 minutes it will slowly start up in regular fashion

Hey guys, I don't have the computer in front of me, but my mom's computer is working really slowly, and it's had the defragger ran on it, and according to Ad-Aware and AVG it's clean, so what could possibly be making it run so slowly? If you absolutely have no idea, I'll try to get a hijackthis log for it, but as I said, Ad-Aware and AVG didn't find anything wrong with it there, and I ran the defrag on it the other day and it didn't help at all. Plenty of space left on the HD, so I have no idea what is going on....except that maybe the computer is a lemon. They've had problems with it since pretty soon after they bought it, but it's just progressively gotten worse.

I have a Sony laptop (about 2 yrs old) with Windows XP professional. My computer has gotten pretty slow, for example, booting up and loading the desktop when I switch applications. There doesn't seem to be anything obviously wrong. I run a disk defragmenter and Spy Sweeper all the time and just downloaded and ran Ad-aware. My hard drive is partitioned -- is that a problem?? -- and there are 2.45 GB of free space out of 9.76 on my C: drive, and 6 GB of space out of 8.85 on my D: drive. I need some advice on what might be wrong. Please! Oh, also, I downloaded a browser called Wanadoo so I could get online in Paris and though I've uninstalled it, it's taken over my other browsers so the top of the web page always reads the page name dash Wanadoo. How do I get rid of it?

It's taking literally minutes to open a Internet Explorer window, to open my e-mail program, and even once inside my e-mail program it takes half a minute to switch from one email to another in my inbox. The first signs were a couple weeks ago. It was taking 20 to 30 seconds to open a word document. But that was the only trouble for a while.I am running Windows XP.I installed, then un-installed SP2 about a month ago. Things seemed to work fine--until the above problems began.

My computer is rocking except when I go to browse the internet then it crawls. I had a manual IP & DNS in my network TCP/IP settings and so I decided to go back to automatic settings and let my Linksys give me a local IP. Problem is that when I did that then I couldnt access the internet. I could access the Linksys control panel but not the internet. So I manually put in a DNS entry which is the address of my Linksys and then I can browse, but the browsing is still very slow.I am not sure what to do.. any thoughts? I'd like to get the automatic IP & DNS, and have the lightning fast speed which I used to have..

I am running Windows XP on a Quad core with 3 Gigs of RAM. I am a musician and use the computer for recirding and mixing. My computer was upgraded a mere 6 months ago and has not had performance issues. However, in the last month I have noticed it slowing down with the hard drive working very hard. Now things are even worse. I cannot load sound samples such as drums as the computer keeps claiming that it is out of memory.I have run adaware and Spybot for spyware. I have defragged, virus checked all to no avail. One thing I should mention is that my two data drives are very low in memory.

I have heaps of space on my hard drive, have defragged etc. Got windows XP and SP2. In system info it says I have about 30MB available memory out of 256MB. This doesn't change much if I disable start up stuff in msconfig. In task manager I have 29 processes running leaving 62144 available physical memory out of 196080. From other messages here this doesn't seem like too many processes running.

I have windowsXP-home. I have dial-up. My computer has been consistently slowing down. It starts out new like it is supposed to but as time goes on it gets slower and slower. If I take it to my son's who has Wi-Fi it works fast but as soon as I get back to dial-up it is slow. You can hear it grinding away trying to get moving. I even took it to a computer place and had them restore everything and it didn't help. They said it didn't act up for them. I switched from Explorer to Firefox and for awhile it was faster. But now it is getting slower again. Once in a while I will get the message that my virtual memory is low and it is adding to it. I have very little on my computer, my hard drive size says 37.2 GB and my free space is 27.0 GB. I have a few pictures but not alot. I only have 1 game added. I use Spybot and I recently got RegCure hoping that it would fix my registry if there was a problem there.

I have a white box Pentium 4 CPU with XP professional service pack 2 build 2600 installed. The motherboard is an intel D865GLC with 512 MB RAM installed in Dual channel mode with 1 256 MB stick of ram in slot zero of bank 1 and 1 256 MB stick of ram in slot zero of bank 2. This memory is dual channel compatible. I tried to add another 2 sticks of the same type ram but from a different manufacturer.
Here's the problem: I can use any 2 of the 4 sticks of ram together, both from the same manufacturer or 1 from 1 manufacturer and 1 from the other for a total of 512 MB. Everything works fine. I can place one stick in slot 0 of bank 1 and the other in slot 0 of bank 2 or I can place 1 in slot 1 bank 1 and 1 in slot 1 of bank 2 with no problems. I can even place a 3rd stick of the same type ram in any open slot and all's fine (except the machine complains that this is not an optimal memory setup). Memtest86 reports no errors with any of the above configurations

Recently, I began having problems when I chose to go into standby. Hard drive just shut off. After several tech discussions with Dell, the computer now just shuts down on its own when I leave it unattended for any length of time. Dell asked me to uninstall/reinstall Windows XP. I am trying to avoid this because it is a lot of work to back up all of my files. I could try prior to doing uninstall/reinstall?

My computer will not boot up. It gets to a certian point and sits there flashing an underscore in the top, left hand corner of the screen. It has done this before, like it stalled on start up and I would just restart it and it would finish booting but that isn't working. I'm using XP Professional...
I installed a software last night on my computer to allow me to transfer images and stuff to my cell phone (motorolla product). When I was installing it a box or something appeared saying it was suddenly missing files and it wanted me to put in the Service pack 2 disk - which I didn't have. My only guess is that is what caused this problem. I have not saved anything yet (was going to do that tomarrow on my only day off)

i have a computer running windows xp sp1. it has p4 1.7 cpu and 1g ddr sdram memory.recently i noticed that the computer was very slow in opening up programs or some other simple operations. i have norton anti virus running all the time, so it should not be virus. i also scanned the system using adaware and every thing seemed ok.so i am just wondering if it could be the memory, as i am using two memory with different speed, one 512 at 2100, and the other at 2700.

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 with 3GHz Pentium 512MB ram, running windows XP. It was top-of-the-line when I bought it, but is now about 4 years old. Over time, the machine has been running slower and slower, especially since I run Apple's itunes, and firefox, which I assume are resource hogs from looking at the Task Manager's processes tab. Lately, it has taken forever for the machine to load windows, or wake up from sleep. Nothing dramatic or noticeable that I could point to, just a gradual slowing down. I always attributed it to an aging computer and lack of memory. So this week, I purchased 2 GB of additional RAM. I've correctly installed it and confirmed, from MyComputer System Properties, that I now have 2.5 GB of RAM installed. I was expecting a big change in speed, but there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference. I have Symantec FireWall and AntiVirus running, ( it was original to the system) and am afraid to remove it.About a year ago, under advice of an IT friend, I also installed AVG and Spybot Search&Destroy.

Computer keeps alerting me that my virtual memory is low. As a result, my system loads extremely slow and I have to force a shut down when I'm ready to quit. I did a ctrl-alt-delete to view my processes and it appears that my scanning processes are 80K of memory. Next in line is internet explorer using 50K.

Lately my computer has been extremely slow, not just internet slow but onboard slow. For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. This delay has been happening with just about anything I click on, acting like the computer's busy doing something else when nothing else should be going on. I've looked in the task manager and the applications column will be blank

The computer is slow to load windows 2000. Takes several mintues to connect to the net. Message showing that "Virtual Memory is low". Have gone into "My computer" - then "advanced options" and increased virtual memory to 1500. There is a good amount of space on the disc. But actions made no difference and still get the message that the virtual memory is low. Speed of computer not improved. Will try "System restore".

I'd appreciate some help with this and have seen similar threads, but am just not competent to sort this out on my own.Windows Explorer is no longer reading my camera card. It either fails to respond or just loads the thumbnail icon and then seems to stop, although a couple of times I left it for around 30minutes and most of the 70 thumbnails had opened, so I'm not completely sure if it's stopped or if it's just so slow the computer thinks it's not working. It will open them once they are in a folder on the PC and I can transfer them using the Nikon software otherwise I'd have a useless camera!I'm also getting quite a few "Internet Explorer is not responding messages", and after downloading version 8 went back to version 7 but it's still happening.

I NEED urgent help, not THIS computer but the person I live with's computer is EXTREMELY slow, things take up to 10-20 minutes to open sometimes, it takes at least 15 minutes to start up or shut down, everything lags, we've tried EVERYTHING, virus scanning, spyware, malware, cleaning the registry, defraging the registry and harddrive, cleaning up, EVERYTHING, anytime you shut down after applying some sort of setting it says it's saving the settings and then you start it back up and it acts like it never saved it, it goes back to the OLD CRAPPY settings, puts every error back on that the program found, recently the boot.ini has become corrupt or invalid, there are two hard drives with plenty of space and we've had this problem for a couple of years! We can't figure out what to do, we both have the same computer, bought it at the same time, mine runs like a charm but their's does not at all, the cpu usage is sky high when you aren't doing anything and sometimes it is 0% when you ARE doing stuff. There is about 10 or more svchost.exe's running, two under a seperate username and none of which we can stop. There are diagnostic lights on the back BUT anytime there is anything wrong with the lights we look in the manual and on the offical website and NO ONE HAS THE LIGHT COMBONATION THAT WE DO!! It's a Dell Dimension 2400, right now it has both 512MB and a 128MB RAM memory stick, we can't upgrade the memory or it fails and starts beeping, Windows XP Home Edition,

we were rebooting my PC to free up the virtual memory. The power cut off in the house, and afterwards, the computer started up very sluggishly. We tried a ChkDisk because my father told me that has fixed his PC before. It didn't help any because it said the disk was fine. I then tried a system restore, which did not help either. It still boots up as slow as ever. The operating system in Microsoft Windows XP 2002 edition with SP2 nstalled, and all the lastest updates installed.

I need info on whether theres a program or something that i can use that will automatically remove the super hidden status of files and folders. I had a virus go through my system and screw up all my files by making them super hidden and im sick of using command prompt to remove the attribute from the individual files and folders. so if theres an easier way to do all my files in one go i would be very appreciative.

The same folder, and its properties window. The next is everything inside plus its properties windows, theres a huge difference. And it's a like 7 Gigabytes difference."super hidden folder" in directly on my C: drive. It was a limewire folder. I had to put C:/uploads just to get into it. I don't know the name of this super hidden folder so I can't just do that. Any help? And if you notice it says that the Tim Atkinson Folder contains 15,738 files in 651 folders and when I go in that folder and select EVERYTHING I get 2,017 files in 650 folders. Theres a folder with a lot of files missing.
