I have a laptop that is booting extremely slow. When you logon to windows it literally takes about 20 minutes to get to the desktop and have the icons show up...but before that happens a Virtual Memory Warning pops up as well.
I have run virus scan, spyware scan
we were rebooting my PC to free up the virtual memory. The power cut off in the house, and afterwards, the computer started up very sluggishly. We tried a ChkDisk because my father told me that has fixed his PC before. It didn't help any because it said the disk was fine. I then tried a system restore, which did not help either. It still boots up as slow as ever.The operating system in Microsoft Windows XP 2002 edition with SP2 nstalled, and all the lastest updates installed.

On Start Up, there is not a lot of extra programs running in the background, and most of the time, my system runs fast. (I use MS Config.) Today, however in my System Tray, I got a Low Virtual Memory Warning Message. What does this mean? I use IE 8 most of the time and occasionally Firefox 3.5.The other thing that I noticed is that from time to time when I right-click on the desktop, I will get a momentary fade-out before the options come into view on the screen. The same thing will sometimes happen when I right-click on my Avast Anti-Virus ball in my System Tray. I only use the computer for Word Processing, e-mail and basic Web Browsing. The computer was purchased in October 2004. Why would I be getting this warning?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI was replying to an e-mail when a message something like 'Virtual memory exceeded,microsoft can fix this' came up. I believe I selected a 'go ahead' button and left it to fix the problem. When I came back sometime later the computer was not reacting to anything so I reset. The screen that shows my hardware etc came up and windows then started, however, when the start up appeared to have progressed to the stage where the screen goes blank and an arrow eventually appears it didn't! It went back to the screen that shows the hardware build and kept cycling in that mode.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI booted up my computer and left it running for a while I noticed I got a Low virtual memory warning. So I opened up task manger and saw the my PF usage was extremely high (around 1.5 GB) and I didn't have anything open or running. Then I restarted it and had the same problem later. After a while some times it will render the computer useless as I can't get anything to run as its so slow. Even as I'm typing this message my PF usage is slowly increasing. I also notice that my "Handles" are slowly increasing too. All that I've done to the computer recently is install a Dynex Wireless G USB adapter. I dont think it's the cause of the problem because when I take the USB adpater out the computer and leave it running.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have windowsXP-home. I have dial-up. My computer has been consistently slowing down. It starts out new like it is supposed to but as time goes on it gets slower and slower. If I take it to my son's who has Wi-Fi it works fast but as soon as I get back to dial-up it is slow. You can hear it grinding away trying to get moving. I even took it to a computer place and had them restore everything and it didn't help. They said it didn't act up for them. I switched from Explorer to Firefox and for awhile it was faster. But now it is getting slower again. Once in a while I will get the message that my virtual memory is low and it is adding to it. I have very little on my computer, my hard drive size says 37.2 GB and my free space is 27.0 GB. I have a few pictures but not alot. I only have 1 game added. I use Spybot and I recently got RegCure hoping that it would fix my registry if there was a problem there.

I did a ctrl-alt-delete to view my processes and it appears that my scanning processes are 80K of memory. Next in line is internet explorer using 50K.

I have Microsoft Windows 2000 and the following settings: total paging file size 205 MB; minimum 2 MB; Recommended 190 MB; Currently allocated 205 MB; current registry size 21 I'm not the system administrator so I can't change these numbers. I also couldn't find the pagefile.sys that someone suggested looking for. My IT guys don't know what's wrong; they reformatted my computer but I got this error message again. What should I tell them to do?

My pc was working just fine a few days ago then last night i go on it was just dragging.Everything was loading slow despite the fact i have even firefox was loading slow which it never does.Anyway i asked my sister who was the last one on if she clicked on anything but no surprise the reply was I didn't do anything so i guess it was a ghost .I ran NAV but nothing found then again NAV doesn't seem to find anything

(30 seconds to a minute after I press power)My specs:E6600 WD 7200 320Gb 1 Gb DDR2 667 (will get another gig around April)ECS P965T-A.I know it should boot a whole lot faster so an explanation or a link to a site would be helpful. I know there are many factors so another site would be fine.

I'm having a big problem with my computer.I've run out of ideal and things to do to speed up this computer. The more I do to speed it up the slower it gets. I can't seem to download anything from the internet that my help me with this problem. I can seee the internet but it take so long to go from a page to another that it time out alot. I went threw all the step to speed up this computer twice with no luck. There very little on the hard drive and I still can't get this puppy going. Can any boby help?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got an old msi K7N2G-L board/computer and it's got an old WD1200JB installed and running xp. The problem is that it boots and runs slow as molasses, I'm talking like 10 mins to get it to the log in screen and opening apps takes a good 2-3mins before opening too. If I run a defrag on the drive, things temp speed back up to normal, but as soon as I reboot, it's slow again. If I run the defrag again, everything's cool and speeds go back to normal.So I'm guessing that there's some HD corruption on this drive (at least 5yrs old) and it keeps writing system files to the bad sections of this old HD when it's booting. I've run various fdisks, but none of them reveal any errors. (I should mention that I'm diligently proactive on Antivirus', firewall and Spyware practices, so that's definitely not an option relating to the old drive's slowness.) I've scanned with Avira, Nod32, Kaspersky, Trojansuperantispyware, and checked hijack this entries, there's nothing detected or unusual. Of course, I don't have all of these installed at once.I decided to try and swap the drive out and reinstall xp on this system using a newer WD3200 drive (that I use as a storage drive on one of my other computers.) I run the xp installer, successfully quick format the 3200 partition to NTFS, and everything proceeds fine and fast(keep in mind the 3200 drive was used to store data on my newer comp and was already formatted to ntfs.) Unfortunately, after it successfully finishes the initial install, it gives me the 15 second reboot warning. Okay, I let it reboot, but instead of continuing the install after the reboot, the system hangs on "Verifying DMI Pool Data" and that's it. Nothing happens and I am unable to finish the installation. I tried this like 10 times with 2 different XP home's and I keep getting the same problem. When I go into Bios, the drive is recognized as a 3200/automatic settings? I can't see why xp installs fine on the old WD1200, but not on the WD3200.
I used spybot and removed 111 objects, adware 48 and Microsoft Antispyware tool 20 objects. However my computer is still running slow. My hijackthis log is attached please help.

my computer is suddenly running extreemly slow at start up and every pplication/operation takes far more time than is resonable. i have not recently downloaded anything new and i have about half free memory. The only error message i get is the 'windows virtual memory too low'
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer started slowing dow about a month ago. It got to where it took forever to load when I turned the computer on and even opening software took forever. Same with turning it off. It also hangs up on me. I can't even press Ctrl + Alt+ Delete to end a program when its not responding. I have to strictly turn the computer off just to get somewhere. I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton. I have the entire Norton system and catches nothing. It says all systems are working properly.
I was asked earlier if I had ever put a music CD in the computer that was by SONY, and I can say that probably close to 20 over the 4 years that I have had it. I was told that SONY puts this "thing" on the CDs that transfer to your computer before you even hear the music so that you are penalized if you try to duplicate them.
My computer boots slowly, loads websites slowly and goes slowly from page to page.If Flrman (or any moderator of the sight) solves this, I will be happy to make a donation to keep this site going.Lastly, how do I get to personal profile to log specs into my sig? Can't find link.

They've had a problem wth spyware in the past and have had it cleaned up, but it still boots up extremely slow. Usually it's around ten minutes or so until you can finally do anything on it, and even then, applications seem to take a while to start up and run slow after they do. Is there something I can do to see what's the matter with it?

View 14 Replies View Relatedmy computer has been running abnormally slow, and I don't mean 5-10 seconds for a program to load, more minutes. Once, it took, from turning the computer on, to arriving on desktop a total of 12 minutes, that was without half the stuff even loading by then!
The slow speed usually occurs when rebooting, I left my computer on for serveral days and eventually it worked good as ever.
I'm not sure if it matters, but soon before loading the desktop, there's a weird grinding type noise coming from the computer, this lasts for about 5-6 seconds, and happens several times.
I have a laptop operating on Windows XP. Recently my computer has become extremely slow. I have gone into task manager and noticed that the CPU usage is quite high, even when there is very little running. At times the system idle will hover in the 90% range, however the CPU usage will also stay in the same range. (As far as I know, if idle is at 90%, than CPU usage should not be higher than 10%). I can't figure out what else is running that is making the CPU usage run so high. I have run various virus and spyware tests and all have come out clean. I have used cc cleaner to clean my registry and even update some of my out of date drivers but the problem has continued.

On turning on my computer, it takes about 2 minutes for Windows XP to start up and no MS audio is heard during the start up phase. Audio is working on other programs, however, such as MS Windows.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI decided to actually run windows updates for once, and I did, it said it was upgrading to windows XP SP3. But then after a while it became extremely slow and I couldn't run anything in the background, the bar was half way through so I left the computer on over night, to find in the morning that the updates were still not finished and the bar was still halfway. The updates were still happening though as different file names like "installing blahblah.dll" were coming up every 10 or so seconds. It's been updating for about 12 hours now and the computers basically frozen and is so slow I can't do anything. I don't want to shut down my computer as I know that's a bad thing to do during windows service pack updates, but what else can I do? This SP update has been going on all night and the bar hasn't moved at all. Should I just shut down/restart the computer and let it restore on startup? It did say at the beginning of the updates that it was backing up my files, and if it didn't I could do system restore. OR, should I just leave my computer on untill it finishes?
