Computer Not Booting - Flashing Top Left Hand Corner Screen
Oct 7, 2006
My computer will not boot up. It gets to a certian point and sits there flashing an underscore in the top, left hand corner of the screen. It has done this before, like it stalled on start up and I would just restart it and it would finish booting but that isn't working. I'm using XP Professional...
I installed a software last night on my computer to allow me to transfer images and stuff to my cell phone (motorolla product). When I was installing it a box or something appeared saying it was suddenly missing files and it wanted me to put in the Service pack 2 disk - which I didn't have. My only guess is that is what caused this problem. I have not saved anything yet (was going to do that tomarrow on my only day off)
I'm trying to access this fantastic jigsaw puzzle at ,and when I paste it into the address bar, I get a little red x up in the left-hand corner of the picture. Where do I go in my security settings to change them so I can get this site?
I have two HDD. In the 1st one XP and Ubuntu and in the 2nd one FC5. Suddenly the XP is not booting. As I choose XP from boot loader [I use Acronis Boot Manager] it is giving me a blank screen with the cursor blinking at the top left corner. Just that no movement, no XP logo nothing.
I tried fixmbr, fixboot and chkdsk; but in vein. sfc scannow is not supported. Fixmbr and fixboot succeeded but it is giving me the same result. I reinstalled FC5's Grub in the hdb5 [location of FC5's installation] but it does not give me boot option. I then reinstalled FC5's grub in hda1 and atleast now I can access net and look for immediate help from you. I know reinstalation is the last option but I just don't want to do that unless I do not have any more avenues left.
I'm hoping some can offer some advice on this rather troublesome problem.I have a Dell laptop that was recently formatted, XP Home was re-installed from the original Dell ReInstallation CDs.Everything has been working perfectly for the past month. However, this past weekend, we're now unable to boot into Windows. When powering the machine on, the Dell logo appears as normal. When the Dell logo disappears, instead of the Windows splash screen appearing, a flashing cursor appears in the upper left hand corner. Nothing else. After letting the machine sit for approximately 30-minutes, an error message never appears.
I've already attempted a few things Removed the drive, attached it to a working computer via USB adapter. There, I performed a scan disk. No error messages appear. Placed the hard drive back into the Dell laptop. Inserted the Windows XP ReInstallation CD to access the recovery console. FIXMBR completed successfully, however the problem continues Verified that the system BIOS recognizes the drive and correct drive size/parameters.I really don't know what to do. Apparently the repair install function is not available with the Dell OS ReInstallation CD. Can someone throw a hint or two? I'm almost out of gas on this one and need to have it running again ASAP.
I have a dell lattitude d800, and my mouse pointer automatically goes to the upper left hand corner. i've plugged an external mouse and i get the same problem. i don't have any spyware - or viruses - as i've ran adaware, spybot, and microsoft antispyware. i've also ran Norton antivirus - and none of the three have detected maliciuos sw or viruses. i don't have any other problems w/the machine. i've uninstalled the default drivers, and reinstalled them.
My mouse is jumping around alot, I have noticed it jump to the bottom right hand corner of the screen a few times. Optical mouse, Dell inspiron l2200 Laptop, brand new, 1.4Ghz, 504mb of ram, XP home. My laptop has been slow since I got it. I have HJT and CleanUp!, Adware, Norton, McAfee and Ewido.
This may be somewhat esoteric but... Under my start button there is a sliver of the taskbar - either blue, silver, or olive green depending on the theme chosen. It wasn't always like this. The start button used to go all the way to the bottom of the screen without any 'line' below it. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to make the start button fill the bottom left corner of the screen again?
I believe I got a virus it was stuck on a warning screen. I tried to reinstall window XP now it goes to choose Window XP Professional or Home on Black screen white lettering. It will not let you choose XP is highlighted. Then it goes to black screen with cursor in left hand corner.
Out of nowhere for some reason not everything is loading on the bottom right hand corner of my screen.Sometimes it loads now and sometimes it doesn't load.I tried to check for spyware but it found nothing is there anything.Dell Inspiron 2200 Intel Celeron(R) M Processor 1.40GHz 504 MB RAM.
DELL XPS 410 XPSP2 - system will not boot past the blinking cursor in the corner. I can't get to the BIOS and the PC will not boot from CD. I have tried to hit F1, F2, F8 andF12 at startup to no avail. I replaced the Video card with a known good card, still no luck.I tried the unplug/plug method for the I/O panel with no changes. The fans are working correctly, so I don't think it was an overheating issue and the power supply is up and running.
I forgot to pull the plug during a thunderstorm and XP home won't boot into the GUI anymore. When trying to start in fail safe mode files seem to be loaded as usual, but at the point where the GUI should be loaded the computer halts and the cursor is blinking in the upper left corner.Have searched MS KB but only found articles about running Fixmbr, chkdisk and fixboot. None worked.
One of my computers started having somwhat an erratic behaviour so i formatted it and reinstalled windows. The erratic behaviour (such as firing "invalid/corrupt file" at me all the time, and rebooting spontaneously) didn't stop, so i tried mounting the HDD in another computer and do the whole thing again. It went fine, and i got all the security updates, installed all my programs. When I plugged it back into it original place, windows won't load (not even in sec mode) - all i see is a white underscore blinking on the top left corner. Can you guys help? Father Google doesn't seem to have an answer for me.
i have a problem with windows media player, whenever i try to play a video, it says play at the bottom left hand side of the screen but nothing plays, audio, or video, what do i do?
On the left hand side of my desktop is a big blue bar. It is about 2 and a half inches wide ( from left to right) and goes from the top of my screen to the bottom where the start menu is. I have tried everything I can think of and have been unable to get rid of it. Does anyone know how to remove this. I even tried in msconfig.
I got back from holiday a few weeks ago and i notice that in my documents, my pictures and all the other windows folders, that the settings had changed. As you can see there is no toolbar on the left hand side of this folder and this is what ever one of my folders look like even if i create a new one. How can i get this back to the original look?
I go to start, a window opens up, two parts. The right hane side contains my nessary items, control panel, search, run ECT. The left hane side contains the recently open items. This fills up fast, and I must go and ''remove this item from list'' with my mouse. Time comsuming. Is there any way to keep items from loading up the left side menu in ''Start''? Have Compaq Presaro, windows XP, home, SP2.
when i set an image as my wallpaper it appears in the bottom right corner of my screen showing just the upper left corner of the image. it only covers approx 2/3 of my desktop. i have tried everything to fix this and its really annoying. i have tried resizing the images, different refresh rates, new graf card drivers (geforce 6700XL). Tried stretch, tile and centre in display properties, various resolutions combined with refresh rates. different images, even tried a different monitor probably a few things i have missed but i been trying for days.
When I open up the Start Menu on one of the accounts, there is nothing in the left-hand column. When I right click and get the Properties, and try to Customize the Menu, the options don't save, and I'm stuck with nothing. I've tried clicking on the Internet radio button for "Show on Start Menu". I click Ok, then Apply, and Finally Ok again. But when I go back to the menu, it still has nothing in the left-hand column.
The second thing I've noticed was under Folder Options -> View, I tried to check both the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" button, and also un-check "Hide extensions for Known File Types" and click on Apply, then Ok again. But still, these options don't save and are reset back to "Do not show hidden files", and "hide extensions".
I have White Box on my Desktop In Upper-Left Corner of my screen that I cannot delete or otherwise remove. I am running Windows XP, and McAfee and Ad-Aware say I have no viruses. In trying to get rid of this box I have discovered that I can expand and reduce the size of the box from the lower right hand corner, and if I drag a web page shortcut icon from my desktop over the box, the web page is displayed. When a web page is being displayed inside the box there are scroll bars on the right and bottom sides to scroll around the web page. If I click on a hyperlink within the box, my default web browser is opened to the link. At first I was using IE, and then I switched to Firefox, and it made no difference. Periodically, the web page being displayed inside the box will disapear, along with the scrolling bars, leaving behind a white box.
When there is a web page being displayed in the box I can right click on the box and I get a menu with the following options: Back, Forward, Save Background as, Set Background, Copy Background, Set as Desktop Item, Select All, Paste, Create Shortcut, Ad to Favorites, View Source, Print, Refresh, Export to Microsoft Excel, Print, Properties. Some of these items are grayed out. If I select properties, there is a "General" tab with the name of the web page, Protocol Info, Type, Connection, Address, Size, Created, Modified. There is a Certificates button at the bottom in addition to OK and Cancel buttons.

My screen keeps flashing and changing colour to a dark horrible colour, It's been doing this for a while but lately seems to be doing it more often and wont change back to what it should be like. Any idea's what the problem could be?

i have been booting up my computer, and while once in a while it will load and allow me to use it for a while, most of the time i always end up with my computer screen turning blue with this message: "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer if this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again follow these steps check to be sure you have adaquate storage space. if a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufactuer for driver updates. try changing video adapters check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. disable BIOS Memory options such as caching or shadowing. if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable componets, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced options and select safe mode. I have an Intel DG31PR with 1 GB memory and Windows XP Home. When I turn the computer on the Intel logo and BIOS 2 settings appear then the screen goes back with a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen . I have to reboot several times before I can login. How do I stop this from happening?
Anytime i go to watch a movie, it flashes black real quick before it starts and then again after i close it.Any idea why? (ATI Mobility x1300 video card, and latest catalyst drivers).
Just wanted to give a solution for an issue that I had on a Dell Optiplex GX270, where it was having problems hanging when a couple of peripheral USB items were plugged in. After I had installed an HP printer, I plugged in an 8Gb thumb drive. It would hang for a very long time until I finally had to reboot. When it went through the short Dell setup screen, it just went black with a flashing underline in the top left corner instead of going to the first Windows startup screen. The funny thing is that I would unplug the HP printer's USB cable while the computer was still powered, and it would immediately start Windows. Through several different test cycles I found that A) Leaving the printer USB cable plugged in during a restart brought up the blank screen w/flashing underscore. B) Not connecting the printer USB cable during a restart brought Windows up properly. That told me that there was a problem with BIOS. I went to the Dell website and flashed my BIOS with the latest update for my computer. That resolved the issue immediately.Hope this helps others resolve similar problems, because it seemed like there
i bought a second hand computer but it didnt come with a product key, the computer now wont start because the screen comes up saying that windows has been corrupted, iv been through the process of rebooting the system and it is now asking for the product key, but how can i find the key?
