Aug 4, 2008

I have an Intel DG31PR with 1 GB memory and Windows XP Home. When I turn the computer on the Intel logo and BIOS 2 settings appear then the screen goes back with a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen . I have to reboot several times before I can login. How do I stop this from happening?

Black Screen With Flashing Cursor

Aug 2, 2009

Machines were running fine until someone took out a power pole down the road. When power resumed, powered my machines back up. 2 out of 3 did OK. The third goes immediately to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper corner.Have already:

1 removed and reseated the power and data cables from the hard drive

2 removed and reseated the RAM modules

3 tried pressing every F key on the keyboard

4 Cntl-Alt-Delete doesn't work either

5 tried on another monitor.

Don't even get to Windows splash screen or able to get to Safe Mode.

Boot Failure Flashing Cursor

Aug 8, 2007

I cloned the 40 GB original HDD, IDE, to an IDE 80 GB HDD using Acronis True Image 8.Cloning took 9 hours.Original HDD was in the Net Vista. Destination HDD attached via USB 2.I had tried using Norton Ghost 2003, but the cloning did not progress. Now, trying to boot to the cloned HDD, the system stalls, before Windows XP Splash screen, with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner.Jumper on original HDD is set to master. Jumper on Destination HDD is set to master. I booted using my Win XP Home CD, but the "R" option was not available. Windows XP Home Edition Setup "If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, setup can try to repair it". Now select the operating system you wish to repair, if as in most occasions there is only one, the just press "R" to continue.

Will Not Boot Flashing Cursor In Top Left Corner

Jun 30, 2008

I'm hoping some can offer some advice on this rather troublesome problem.I have a Dell laptop that was recently formatted, XP Home was re-installed from the original Dell ReInstallation CDs.Everything has been working perfectly for the past month. However, this past weekend, we're now unable to boot into Windows.
When powering the machine on, the Dell logo appears as normal. When the Dell logo disappears, instead of the Windows splash screen appearing, a flashing cursor appears in the upper left hand corner. Nothing else. After letting the machine sit for approximately 30-minutes, an error message never appears.

I've already attempted a few things Removed the drive, attached it to a working computer via USB adapter. There, I performed a scan disk. No error messages appear. Placed the hard drive back into the Dell laptop. Inserted the Windows XP ReInstallation CD to access the recovery console. FIXMBR completed successfully, however the problem continues Verified that the system BIOS recognizes the drive and correct drive size/parameters.I really don't know what to do. Apparently the repair install function is not available with the Dell OS ReInstallation CD. Can someone throw a hint or two? I'm almost out of gas on this one and need to have it running again ASAP.

Won't Boot. Black Screen With No Cursor After The Logo Screen

Aug 9, 2010

it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me how to fix this?

Cannot Boot Pro - Safe Mode - Black Screen With Working Cursor

Dec 15, 2004

I cannot boot my XP machine. In safe mode it also says safe mode in white text in each corner and shows windows build details at the top. I have trying going back to previous good config - same problem. A normal boot just leads to a black screen with a movable mouse arrow - no sign of a login screen. I have tried a recovery reinstall from a an XP pro CD from another computer - this took about 40 minutes and went through all the steps normally (with normal graphics displayed duting the reinstall) but after finishing the same problem is still there.

Only now the windows build info in sfae mode reports SP1 (originally didi not as the computer was supplied with XP before SP1) I am at a loss to know what to do to get the machine wordking without a refomat of the hard disk, whcih will destroy all my data, and my partners stuff too - mostly not backed up, as usual.

At Log In Black Screen Cursor Only

Jan 4, 2006

About four months ago, I received a computer as a gift. However, about two weeks ago, while booting, I got a screen asking to run (I believe) a scan on my drives. After the scan was done, The computer completely shut down. When I tried to turn it back on, where the log in screen should be with the accounts on it, I had only a black screen, but I could see and move my cursor.I have done everything I could think of, tried to start in Safe Mode (same thing happened), tried to boot in Last Best Configuration(same), put hard drive in another computer and defragged it(No Results), and tried putting my Windows XP CD in to do a System Restore(Same thing happens). I don't really have very much on the computer, so a restore would not be too painful. Is there anything that I NEED to do when booting up with my XP disk to perform a restore?

Black Screen Of Death With Cursor

Aug 30, 2010

My husband's laptop has the black screen of death (KSOD) with a white cursor that stays in the middle - and never completely boots into windows. All attempts to go into any of the other options via F8 (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Enable with Boot Logging, Enable with VGA, Last Known Good Configuration, etc...) all produce the same result - KSOD with cursor. I have the CD for reinstallation of Windows XP Pro with SP2 and have used it to go into the Recovery Console. all with the same result. I have also copied registry files (service, security, software, sam and default) from windows/repair, in case it was a registry issue. No luck. I even went back and did a Repair Installation with the Windows CD (an upgrade only, not a full installation) with no luck. I have gone into the BIOS and put everything back in default - nothing. ****Though I did notice that the BIOS CLOCK is off time every time I've checked it out (i.e. it's 7pm and the clock would say 9pm or 10pm. It never had the correct time every single time I checked).

Black Screen With Moveable Cursor After Splash Screen?

Feb 11, 2009

Was working fine this morning but this afternoon - Upon startup everything runs fine until after the windows splash screen everything goes black and the only thing visable is a cursor, but nothing to click, cannot ctrl=alt=del, cannot right click. Cannot enter safe mode at all, last good configuration doesn't work either. Computer is still running, fan whirring, lights flashing. Fan has been cleaned and power supply checked, no change. Cannot get into anything to run explorer or virus check. She is running Windows XP SP3. I'm unsure of when sp3 was installed. I understand this may be an issue, along with video and graphics drivers, display settings, corrupt registry, flat CMOS battery or loose internal connections.

Starts To Black Screen Alongwith The Cursor

Dec 13, 2008

This morning I was on the internet on my Gateway MP8708 notebook when internet explorer started acting weird. It sounded like it was constantly trying to reload a page over and over. So I closed IE and upon trying to reopen it would immediately shut down (Firefox wouldnt even open at this point). I did some searches around the net and after running Malwarebytes anti malware and removing a few items, IE still wouldnt stay open. I found a posting on the net saying that if you go into Internet Options and uncheck "enable third party browser extensions", which I did. IE seemed to stay open after this but would not load the home page. Also my PC seemed a bit laggy, so I did a restart. This is where the system took a dump. It loads up past the bios screen, and the windows obligatory splash screen then just loads to a black screen with the mouse cursor and stays that way. I tried booting in safe mode (with command prompt, with networking, and without) all I get is the safe mode information on the top and bottom of the black screen, along with the cursor, but nothing else. Tried last good configuration, but still a no go. It seems to me that windows was somehow corrupted by whatever infected me

Startup Gets Stuck On Black Screen With Cursor

May 21, 2006

I dont know what is going on. I originally was trying to get my webcam to work, it wouldn't so i was going through troubleshooting procedures according to its help menu, and it asked me to unplug all usb devices and replug the webcam only, well i wasn't thinking and I just unplugged the external hardrive and the webcam at the same time without "stopping" it. So then it gaev me a message saying it needed to reboot to complete its update or something i wasn't paying attention cause i thought it just needed to reboot for the webcam so i did, then when i rebooted it would show the COMPAQ screen with the three options at the bottom(ESC for boot menu, F1 for BIOS(Ithink) and F10 for recovery, well then it would go immediately to a black screen w/ a white cursor in top left corner, It would idle there permenantly. I would have to ctrl+alt+del to get it to go back and finally i was looking for a way to use my recovery tools cd, that didn't work at first but then it finally came up and said it could do a recovery where it wouldn't delete my files but it would restore the rest to orignal state, so i went ahead and chose that option. It finished and said to reboot. I did, then it still gets stuck at that black screen, doesn't even show the WINXP screen.so i was looking for a way to figure this out and i went to the ESC menu this is what you see there.

Black Screen And Cursor After Windows Update

Apr 22, 2009

I am running into a very annoying issue. We all work for a local PC repair shop and have had at least 10 pc's and laptops come in during the last two days with all the same issue. Customers have installed some windows update, rebooted and the systems will only display a black screen with a cursor. Some will get into windows if you leave them sitting after an hour or so, but no services are running, cannot run anything on the system (obviously without services running). Have tried repair installs, checkdisk's, and still no luck. Have also scanned HDD's on different systems with numerous anti- virus -spyware programs. nothing found.
Any one have any idea's?We literally had 6 or 7 day rushes for the issues from major VIP people that own local businesses, and our only fix has been to reload windows. Any insight would be great. And please understand that we are all Microsoft certified and have tried all of your run of the mill fixes for windows.

Boots To Black Screen / Mouse Cursor Active

Oct 21, 2009

So yesterday my computer suddenly started getting slow, so I rebooted. When the machine boots, it's all fine, but just after the Windows loading screen, the screen goes black, and the only thing that's active is the mouse cursos which I can move. But I can't right click or anything etc.I can't bring up the Task Manager. I try loading in safe mode but it's still all black, with the expection that the text "Safe mode" is written around the black screen. So what I did was I got a Ultimate Boot CD and loaded from it. I managed to roll back my windows registry to 2003 (manufactor fresh), and now windows actually loaded and I didn't get the black screen anymore, however obviously it was all a complete mess having a registry from so long ago, so I backup rolled it back to the current again, and the black screen returned.

With that logic, shouldn't it be possible to do some tweaks to the registry to solve this issue? I'm a complete beginner and I barely even know the function of the registry. Everything i've tried so far i've just managed to google and follow step by step instructions, so bare with me. But judging from the tools in the Ultimate Boot CD, I can access the windows registry. So basically, where do I take it from here?

Black Screen With Blinking Cursor After Power On Post

Nov 23, 2007

I built a decent computer system for myself a little a year ago. a few weeks ago, I wanted to have to use two monitors with ATI Radeon 9250, so I bought a DVI/VGA adapter. But I couldn't get both monitors working at at the same time. Since I have a brand new ASUS EAX1300HM512 video card, I figured I'd install and that would do the trick. Well that did not work. Then I tried adding both cards on the MOBO, I could not get both monitors working (I'm sure it was user error). Then I removed the EAX1300One, reboot...from that point on the computer kept rebooting after I logon to Windows. I was able to access the computer through safe mode. After several weeks of using my backup pc, I thought I would try to resolve this problem. I removed the MOBO's battery then put it back. Now the computer powers on and posts, I am able to see the bios but after that i just get a black screen with a blinking cursor.
